Look it will tow a 2.5T van ok but will struggle big time up hills. I sold my Prado, it was hopeless towing my large camper trailer, passing big trucks was dangerous. Now have a V6 diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee, just chalk and cheese when it comes to towing, the Jeep just cruisers up all but the steepest hills with ease. Check out this tow test, this is the earlier model, later model has slightly more power and torque which will help.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKfZkIGYha2SmJY

Thank you for a really informative review. I have a 2013 GXL diesel with 140k on the clock. I towed a 2.5T van around most of Oz last year and found the only real issue was with rear suspension sagging even after installing TJM uprated springs before the trip. Had to replace the rear springs in Broome with Old man Emu with an even higher rated set. Only problem now is the Prado is really stiff and bouncy without the van. Could you explain how the Kakadu rear suspension would handle a trip like this straight out of the showroom. You briefly mentioned the rear suspension can be adjusted up and down. Is it really designed strong enough for the long haul?

The front end looks much better giving the appearance of looking less bulky. Info tainment is so much improved. The TPMS now can register a new sensor and also reset. No more trips to the dealer. Live on the north coast nsw, go to our farm, have 4 kids and do light off road eg national parks, beach. I’ve been driving my R51 Nissan Pathfinder for 14 years and found it great. I narrowed it down to the Everest Basecamp and Prado. I loved the Prado’s “simplicity”. Our teenage boys fit well and perfect to tow our Jayco camper. I’m a middle aged bloke so the tech is perfect for me especially compared to the CD player in the pathy 😉. Cheers.

I rented one years ago and took it to Toolangi State Forest. It was a decent car, but nothing special when it came to off-road capability. My friends would often have to pull me through the mud. You would need at the very least, mud tyres, lift kit, front and rear lockers, and underbody protection. Then if you can do it, add a sway bar disconnect. Otherwise a Jeep Rubicon would be far more capable stock.

Good review I have owned the previous model and "downgraded" to the 1KD FTV as the motor is more responsive and economical but also the 5 Speed Auto is just so much better than the 6 Speed I am hoping the 2021 model is better, because the 2018 - 2020 range of 6 speeds is hopeless as it won't hold 6th on anything less than billiard flat surfaces. Also the DPF - rather than burn when it needs to, Toyota have been defeated by their poor design and made them burn roughly every 300km - this means that on an average full load of fuel it does a burn four times. Every time it does a burn it does so for between 30 and 40 kilometres. Meaning of the 1,200 km range you get out of the twin tank version 120 kilometres are spent on the DPF burn cycle.

Being a long time 4wd owner, it’s like finger nails down a black board every time I hear a non-4wd owner refer to them as “SUV’s” in Australia. And commenting on how large the mirrors are, it’s clear he doesn’t regularly drive 4wds, not that there’s anything wrong with that. I find sedan & SUV (soft roader) mirrors to be quite small with little visibility through them, but that’s only because I don’t regularly drive them. But you can always pick a non-4wd owner 10 times out of 10 in a car review of one. This occasion was no different. Full credit to him for not faulting the on-road handling/manners on this occasion but I think that is because he drove the Kakadu with KDSS. Car reviewers love to knock how a 4wd handles winding turns. It’s like a “News just in bulletin.”

How are you finding the ride comfort? I could only get a short ride in one and it rode quite hard and you could feel every bump. Speed bumps were a bang bang affair. What are your thoughts on this. I don’t know what tyre pressure it had, it had 19 inch wheels and a bullbar. I have ordered one and have to wait 6 months but I am worried as to the ride quality. I drive a Mitsubishi challenger atm and the Kakadu seemed to ride harder than that.

I own the 2018 model and have just ordered the 2021 with more power, I agree totally with you and have found, in winter turning up the temp by half a degree is all you need to do. The roads in your country seem very straight , but driving on a European mountain road that extra setting on the suspension just tightens up the roll through corners and give you more confidence. Its not mind altering but a subtle change . The extra power will come in very useful when the car is full of holiday stuff and you want to join a motorway or exit a rest stop . The addition of day/night sensors that can pick out people and animals is a big plus. Meeting a Moose that is so very camouflaged at dusk and is bigger than a horse is scary. Happened to me many times. The demographic of older people who are out spending their children's inheritance is spot on. Toyota has done their homework very well. great revue.

I'm in the market for a new car at the moment. I've looked at the highlander, but although it is incredibly comfortable and has good fuel economy, the ground clearance is downright scary. My wife takes a journey to a kindergarten on a morning and there is a shortcut that involves going over some water, rocks, etc, which my X Trail just about manages, but there would be no chance for the highlander. Then we have the Prado, which I like the look of and of course it is immensely practical for the roads (if you can call them that) that I sometimes need to travel on, but the interior bums me out. That 360 camera would be a massive downgrade to what I've got now. The old school hand break as well. I haven't had that for 10 years. It's a pity, as it wouldn't been a big upgrade in interior design and camera quality for me to go for it, but alas, I just can't as it is currently.

One thing not mentioned is the very low payload, especially on the Kakadu. Put on a bullbar, 2nd battery, fridge, roofrack, and 4 people and there's no more (legal) capacity to put in all your camping gear. You need to get a GVM upgrade. Towing just makes staying legal with GVM virtually impossible.

@tonymillar53423 жыл бұрын
Firstly, the hdmi port / socket in most cars (including this one, but excluding Tesla), is not an outlet. It's an input. Nothing, including charging, comes out of it. It's just there to receive data. Paul mentioned it but didn't complete his explanation. It's there for rear seat passengers to plug in a compatible hdmi device so that they can play / watch video on the drop down screen @ 10:00. For that money they should have put in a modern 8 speed automatic.

That 0-100kph was very interesting this prado is only 2 secs faster than the 70 series landcruiser wagon you tested previously. I am a bit surprised I really thought the prado would have been a bit quicker in comparison.

2 secs is less for you?🤣

How pathetic of Toyota to release a car that is 5 years behind the industry when it comes to Tech. If Hyundai/KIA brought out a real 4x4 they would crush Toyota’s old school interiors and technology. I look at this $90k ‘new” prado and laugh, in comparison to the 2021 Santa Fe I have just ordered.

Bahahahaha! Hyundai? Don’t be upset because you can’t afford a proper car mate.

I think Hyundai’s ability to make a true 4wd is well summed up in their discontinuation of the Terracan 10+ years ago. And I wouldn’t be flexing with a Santa fe mate. A santa fe simply does not compare to a Prado in off road ability. They simply don’t exist in cape york/fraser island/simpson desert whereas there are plenty of Prado’s roaming about.

SUV AWD and a Proper 4WD like the Prado with locking diffs are chalk and cheese off road.

‘Dependable, reliable, goes on forever’ - obviously he hasn’t heard about the DPF issues or pistons randomly cracking with these diesel motors?

I did notice a lot of broken land cruisers, hiluxs & prado’s while doing the lap last year. The most common vehicle was without doubt fords ranger / bt 50 then land cruisers. The common theme seemed to be towing over 2 tonne. Don’t believe the 3.5 tonne adds I guess. If you mistreat your vehicle it will break at some point.

Australians are really into their off-roaders. Largest Land Cruiser market for sure. Great content though.

@Saad KH S A AlHajry it's actually Australia, you can check for yourself. And Aussies use the off road capability to the fullest unlike other markets.
