New car has arrived,lots of subtle improvements over 2018 model. Pickup better, quieter inside, and ride much improved. the bounce over speed bumps much softer. The front end looks much better giving the appearance of looking less bulky. Info tainment is so much improved. The TPMS now can register a new sensor and also reset. No more trips to the dealer. Actually I probably think this was done as dealers could not make much money swapping summer, winter tyres.

Presently I drove 2014 Landcruiser prado 160kms driven..I purchased 195k Sr ..in Saudi Arabia..I feel its good road presence Engine is really power full absolutely no lag .. Body rolling is very minimal compared to Toyota fortuner ..and No buzzing noise of wind cutting ..which I used to get in Fortuner .. Off road prado better than fortuner I drove minimum 5 yrs in desert loose sands ..many times I get drifted in fortuner when I drove more than 80kms speed.. 2014 I purchase this prado almost 7 yrs not even single complaint I didn't get from this Vehicle ..and yes after 150k km your milage will be maximum 5.72kms per ltr petrol.. Fortuner I drove 300kms..one evening when I coming bk from power plant project Fortuner electronic suddenly stopped entire battery pack completely drain vehicle at 120kms completely no control...just came bk to neutral ..Dynamo stop recharging the battery and bcaz of that entire electronic board which control the steering and other stuff completely shuts off.fortuner called as killer vehicle

How are you finding the ride comfort? I could only get a short ride in one and it rode quite hard and you could feel every bump. Speed bumps were a bang bang affair. What are your thoughts on this. I don’t know what tyre pressure it had, it had 19 inch wheels and a bullbar. I have ordered one and have to wait 6 months but I am worried as to the ride quality. I drive a Mitsubishi challenger atm and the Kakadu seemed to ride harder than that.

I own the 2018 model and have just ordered the 2021 with more power, I agree totally with you and have found, in winter turning up the temp by half a degree is all you need to do. The roads in your country seem very straight , but driving on a European mountain road that extra setting on the suspension just tightens up the roll through corners and give you more confidence. Its not mind altering but a subtle change . The extra power will come in very useful when the car is full of holiday stuff and you want to join a motorway or exit a rest stop . The addition of day/night sensors that can pick out people and animals is a big plus. Meeting a Moose that is so very camouflaged at dusk and is bigger than a horse is scary. Happened to me many times. The demographic of older people who are out spending their children's inheritance is spot on. Toyota has done their homework very well. great revue.

Being a long time 4wd owner, it’s like finger nails down a black board every time I hear a non-4wd owner refer to them as “SUV’s” in Australia. And commenting on how large the mirrors are, it’s clear he doesn’t regularly drive 4wds, not that there’s anything wrong with that. I find sedan & SUV (soft roader) mirrors to be quite small with little visibility through them, but that’s only because I don’t regularly drive them. But you can always pick a non-4wd owner 10 times out of 10 in a car review of one. This occasion was no different. Full credit to him for not faulting the on-road handling/manners on this occasion but I think that is because he drove the Kakadu with KDSS. Car reviewers love to knock how a 4wd handles winding turns. It’s like a “News just in bulletin.”

Thanks for the great review. I’ve trawled all your reviews in this class. I just purchased a 2021 GXL. I’ve been looking for a while in this market. Live on the north coast nsw, go to our farm, have 4 kids and do light off road eg national parks, beach. I’ve been driving my R51 Nissan Pathfinder for 14 years and found it great. I narrowed it down to the Everest Basecamp and Prado. I loved the Prado’s “simplicity”. Our teenage boys fit well and perfect to tow our Jayco camper. I’m a middle aged bloke so the tech is perfect for me especially compared to the CD player in the pathy 😉. Cheers.

I rented one years ago and took it to Toolangi State Forest. It was a decent car, but nothing special when it came to off-road capability. My friends would often have to pull me through the mud. You would need at the very least, mud tyres, lift kit, front and rear lockers, and underbody protection. Then if you can do it, add a sway bar disconnect. Otherwise a Jeep Rubicon would be far more capable stock.

Very comprehensive review Paul. I really appreciate the details you are going to. I was looking for a SUV since 2020, and had off road capabilities at the back of my head in my search. back in 2020, you could still get the last few Pajeros , and the Prados didn't have the safety pack as standard if my memory was correct. I waited, and in 2022, dis some test driving on the MUX, Subaru forester, Mazda CX-9 and a 2012 LC Prado, and a Pajero as well. For some reason, I was much impressed about the ride on the Prado than any other. Of course the CX-9 was the most comfy ride on the road, however it being petrol, and having AWD was not my thing. Finally I ended up with the legendary LC Prado, and I am happy that I made the right decision. Now the Prado has all the safety features, which was missing, makes night driving and driving in heavy rains in freeways much safer. I went with GXL range to save about 9K, that I didn't really want heated seats, leather seats and the Bose audio (the stock speakers are awesome enough) , but really useful is the side cameras, when parking and off road drives. Looking for a way to install a front grille camera which will be useful for parking, which shouldn't cost more than couple hundred $$.

One thing not mentioned is the very low payload, especially on the Kakadu. Put on a bullbar, 2nd battery, fridge, roofrack, and 4 people and there's no more (legal) capacity to put in all your camping gear. You need to get a GVM upgrade. Towing just makes staying legal with GVM virtually impossible.

I had to drive a Prado up to Wauchope NT and then across to Canteen Creek. For someone who is accustomed to travelling ten of thousands of seal road kilometres in sedans...Falcon, 380 and Optima, I didn't think much of the Prado on the sealed Stuart Highway. Then we left the sealed road of the Stuart Highway and headed onto Epenarra and then to Canteen Creek and the penny dropped "now I understand the Prado" One of the great vehicles on the market anywhere in the world.

I'm in the market for a new car at the moment. I've looked at the highlander, but although it is incredibly comfortable and has good fuel economy, the ground clearance is downright scary. My wife takes a journey to a kindergarten on a morning and there is a shortcut that involves going over some water, rocks, etc, which my X Trail just about manages, but there would be no chance for the highlander. Then we have the Prado, which I like the look of and of course it is immensely practical for the roads (if you can call them that) that I sometimes need to travel on, but the interior bums me out. That 360 camera would be a massive downgrade to what I've got now. The old school hand break as well. I haven't had that for 10 years. It's a pity, as it wouldn't been a big upgrade in interior design and camera quality for me to go for it, but alas, I just can't as it is currently.

Look it will tow a 2.5T van ok but will struggle big time up hills. I sold my Prado, it was hopeless towing my large camper trailer, passing big trucks was dangerous. Now have a V6 diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee, just chalk and cheese when it comes to towing, the Jeep just cruisers up all but the steepest hills with ease. Check out this tow test, this is the earlier model, later model has slightly more power and torque which will help.kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKfZkIGYha2SmJY

US is missing diesel engines, compensated with v6/v8 utility trucks/Sequoia lineup and rav4 phev. Australia don't have any of them.

Australians are really into their off-roaders. Largest Land Cruiser market for sure. Great content though.

Thank you for a really informative review. I have a 2013 GXL diesel with 140k on the clock. I towed a 2.5T van around most of Oz last year and found the only real issue was with rear suspension sagging even after installing TJM uprated springs before the trip. Had to replace the rear springs in Broome with Old man Emu with an even higher rated set. Only problem now is the Prado is really stiff and bouncy without the van. Could you explain how the Kakadu rear suspension would handle a trip like this straight out of the showroom. You briefly mentioned the rear suspension can be adjusted up and down. Is it really designed strong enough for the long haul?

Great review mate. BTW what’s the HDMI outlet for?
@tonymillar5342
@tonymillar5342 4 жыл бұрын
Firstly, the hdmi port / socket in most cars (including this one, but excluding Tesla), is not an outlet. It's an input. Nothing, including charging, comes out of it. It's just there to receive data. Paul mentioned it but didn't complete his explanation. It's there for rear seat passengers to plug in a compatible hdmi device so that they can play / watch video on the drop down screen @ 10:00. Hope this helps you Tone.

I don't understand why there are different trim level names for different markets. In much of Africa we have the base model, GX, VX and VX-R. And there are only two engine options, depending on where you live in Africa (most of southern Africa has a diesel option). A 2.7 4 cylinder or a 4.0 V6 from the 4Runner with either a 5 speed or six speed automatic transmission.

That 0-100kph was very interesting this prado is only 2 secs faster than the 70 series landcruiser wagon you tested previously. I am a bit surprised I really thought the prado would have been a bit quicker in comparison.

As an old-school four wheel driver, I was really disappointed when Toyota dropped the manual transmission from the Prado range. I also appreciate how clever all the new 4wd tech is, but for me the enjoyment I get from off-roading is the challenge and satisfaction from applying skill and experience in solving a complicated track. Great video by the way.

Hay Paul, If the 360 degree camera is bad , do you think replacing it with HD camera from let's say supercheap auto will solve the issue ?
@CarExpertAus

I’m not sure. It may come down to whatever they are using to process the image and overlay lines. But surely HD cameras aren’t too hard to come by!

Only loss from going the flat back option is losing the backup sub fuel tank. 150L down to 87L with the flat back option.

I did notice a lot of broken land cruisers, hiluxs & prado’s while doing the lap last year. The most common vehicle was without doubt fords ranger / bt 50 then land cruisers. The common theme seemed to be towing over 2 tonne. Don’t believe the 3.5 tonne adds I guess. If you mistreat your vehicle it will break at some point.

0-100km/h if officially 9.9 seconds with an aggressive start, ie hold brake and feather throttle to 2k rpm and then release brake. Commercial version or SWB version are about half a second quicker again with the same auto box.

We don't have Prado available in Canada, but we have Lexus GX460. Its not diesel though. Its gas engine 4.7ltr V8 is very thrusty and insanely reliable. People say it goes on and on and on. Would love to have smaller diesel engine on it like Prado
