Looking forward to the test! ATV XC racing is alive and well right now but the used market is starting to get ridiculous with mint condition quads going at or above the original MSRP. That to me is a good indicator that the market is ready for another sport atv. Unfortunately the manufacturers would rather sell 30k SXSs than 7 or 8k sport quads.. But.. Nothing beats a solid axle sport ATV. They're the most fun to ride because of the rider's engagement and they have the least impact on trails because they don't have 30inch mud tires ripping deep ruts.. The market really needs a torquey 400 trail machine that cost at or below 7k so more folks can enjoy the trails! #savesportquads

Here's what I love about sport ATV's, they are about the closest thing to riding a snowmobile in the summer. There is probably a big overlap between the dirt trax and snow trax crew and some of the trails we ride in winter are there in the summer. Yeah the sport atv's top out at snowmobile cruising speeds but for me it's always been that exploration of the trails and connecting with the machine and working the clutch and the shifter that has kept me away from the CVT quads.

Pretty awesome review, I am going to add in my thoughts, I agree with pretty much everything you mentioned here. So a little about me I am Sam Burnham, I bought my very first atv at smokey point powersports in Washington state. That ATV was the Raptor 700 in July of 2006. Just last year after 17 years of riding, racing, mountain trails of walker valley, Sand dunes of Moses Lake, WA, Dumont Sand Dunes, mountains and high desert riding in red rock canyon, Dove Springs, Wagon wheel, Hare and hounds races, VXCS, a gncc race, atv mx national, won ATV B mx at 2017 socal summer series. atv mx in Virginia, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Straddaline Wa, Hannegan Speedway in Bellingham Washington and even Park city Kansas. I rode this ATV hard. big air Jumps, multiple big crashes, this thing took a beating. The engine went through and was on its 5th top nd. I will say I never split the cases in 17 years and never replaced the clutch. I have replaced the seat subframe about 6 times, the lower subframe twice and I think am on the 3rd oem swing arm. I dont know how many lower a-arms I went through before upgrading to Houser long travel with motowoz Shocks front and rear long travel. another great addition was Fast Flex bars and anti vibe steering stem. I never invested in the steering dampener though always had them recommended. I did have an issue with fowling spark plugs from the factory, but removing the spark arrestor and upgrading the air filter and removing the airbox lid stopped that. eventually went with yoshi PIM2 fuel controller and Yoshi full system exhaust.. the steal portion of the frame got welded back together 3 times in different places over the 17 years, but my last big air crash did to much to salvage the frame so it is finally getting retired. my biggest complaint over the years has always been the fenders. the rear fender in particular. in aggressive power sliding around corners I tend to get off the seat and sitting on the fender and this damages the plastic where the front fender meets the back pulling it way from the frame and digging into your riding boot. I am working on a design to fix this issue and give it a few nice touches. you can check it out on my you tube channel. But ultimately I love the raptor 700. I have never built the engine super crazy powerful with a web cam, 13.5-1 compression, stroker crank or any of that. My typical refresh was 11:1 piston stage 2 cam, that was about as crazy as I got with the engine and it was always super reliable, never an issue starting, or stalling on the line. I have played with gears ran as tall as 15:36 on various tire sizes. MX 15:36 did okay with 18 inch tires but it did hurt my acceleration out of the corners. with 20 inch tires top speed in 5th seems crazy fast. 15:38 is probably the best overall gearing that I was happiest with. I cant wait to get my Original 2006 back together in the mean time I have my project restore 06 700, a yfz450r and a YFM 200 blaster to keep me entertained. Hope you enjoyed this write up and will check out my channel. See everyone at the Midwest Raptor Rally May 17,18, and 19th 2024.

I think the sport market is coming back. I'd love to see more brands come back too despite the raptors always having been my favorite. My son has a raptor 250 and loves it. Up here on the Tughill plateau the seasonal roads are perfect for riding sport quads. With that being said, seeing a sport quad on the trails is as rare as seeing a Ferrari on the road. That needs to change!

@@leejordan2750 gncc style racing is about 70% talent, 30% machine. People are competitive on 800lb utility quads. Obviously if you intend to be the best, you need a 450. We were suppose to test a x xc but it was not trail tag yet so we took a xtp. Ok here it is my opinion on a 4 wheeler from a biker. I rode a Outlander xtp 1000 for around 1h during a 6 h ride last weekend. This is my first time driving a quad. First impression is this thing is huge. I will keep this short. It is the easiest thing to ride on the trail. We actually used it as a rest vehicule during our ride. Qs3 fox shox are great, it was set at 2 but we changed it for 1 and it made the ride very good. 1000 power is really nice and smooth. Decent difference from sport mode to normal. We rode in normal most of the time because it made the throttle less sensitive. We all agree ( those who drove it) that 850-1000 is where we would go if we would buy a quad. When i switch from my ktm xcw450 to the Outlander it was a relaxing experience, a pleasant one. Very stable and confidence inspiring. Soaks up everything and only max out suspension 1-2 times. It was a very smooth operating quad. Engine, cvt, switches easy to use and operate. I could ride that things for hours without getting tired with dps turning the bars is easy and it does not kick back. The quad was an nvh test unit and only had 1300 km on it. It had all the options on it. My only complaint is there was no glove box to put my cell and wallet. The rear case with tool in it was not the place to put anything fragile! I don’t know if they put one glove box on 2021 model but my son took note and will give our feedback to the design team. I was really impressed by the quality of the unit, the smoothness of the engine and the no drama ride. For a biker this thing was easy, fun and it was more safe to have the quad to take a breather from the enduro bike. We rode all type of trail from mud, rock garden, flowing and in between. We average 46-40km/h during a 6h ride covering 186 km. Side note all passengers who ride in the back seat did not like it, they all prefer side by side for riding along. The quad now are really good and if you want to get into trail riding i would recommend the Outlander without hesitation that was a solid ride.

I miss my old sport quad(Polaris Outlaw 525 IRS). I chose it because of the ground clearance verses the straight axle. I drove trails with other 4wd quads and surprised all with its capability. Unfortunately they were only made for a short time. The biggest short comings for the sport atv to me and the environment I enjoy... 1 - Lack of storage(Backpack or nothing) Tools on to repair a clutch cable tire repair not happening with water and emergency supplies. Also I like day trips where I do not race back to camp for food or refreshment(drive the same trails over and over... might as well be on a course). 2- Skill(requires skill and practice to ride safely, not anyone will be able to ride). Most people that I have come across that drive sport quads can no longer ride a dirt bike or are transitioning from a dirt bike. The adrenaline/thrill of a sport quad done fire roads/hard pack or gravel is addicting.

I've had my 2017 Raptor 700R since early 2018, and still love it as much as I did when I first got it! I started riding dirt roads and trails, until that was no longer an option in our area. Now we mostly ride MX tracks, so I've widened it out 4 inches, and had the stock reservoir shocks rebuilt to the new spec's, and it performs amazingly! The only other parts I've added so far is a Big Gun slip on exhaust, and graphics. The exhaust sounds awesome, and really enhances the riding experience. Even after widening it out, it still works great on the trails! My son, who can be seen riding the YFZ 450 on our channel, is waiting for the 2021 model to become available in our area, so he can buy one as well! ( We've never said that publicly until now, so you heard it first right here! ) You can see the performance and hear the exhaust on our channel if anyone is interested.

I miss the sport quads but there is definitely a market here in the USA. It’s the manufacturers (except Yamaha) that are the problem. They wants 20-30k sxs to be the pinnacle of their product line. If they would just re-release the same kfx, trx, and ltz 450s with addition of 400ex,z400, you would see sport quad revival!

I would love to see new sport quads! I also don’t think they’re coming back. There’s no new ones out on the market, and the existing ones are hardly being updated (for example, the trx250x and yfz450r are still pretty much the same machines as they’ve always been, just like you mention with the raptor). I think the way to get people back into them is to make our sport quads into IRS like the old Polaris outlaw 525. It would give them ground clearance to be able to do more terrain, like out west. Imagine a Raptor 700R IRS! What do you think, DirtTrax?

We bought two 700’s in 2018 👍🏻👍🏻 Only wish they were about 3” wider, but that can be remedied

I miss the Suzuki LTZ 400! I wish they still made them. But can't go wrong with a Raptor either. Basically anything powerful and reliable.

Love the sport quad. The mud monsters are to heavy to throw around

The raptor is sick! I wish yamaha would show more love to the yfz450 though. Brand new yfz’s are having the clutch baskets explode. I was 100% going to buy one till i found out about that. Gotta update it with the old yfz450 clutch or just get a expensive hinson or rekluse which is kinda disappointing considering its brand new. Then yamaha knows about the problem but hasn’t updated the clutch basket for some reason. I also wish they would try to incorporate the yz450f motorcross bike engine and put it in the yfz. Stock yz450f is making like 53hp and the stock yfz olny makes 39 and is alot heavier. With that being said though i’m just glad yamaha still has the guts to continue making sport quads!

You use to need a sport atv to go fast. Big twins started to come out mid 2000s in 4x4s. I think that took over the market.
@powersportsenthusiast19863 жыл бұрын
no, side by sides are what is taking over the market in my opinion (and id be surprised if i was wrong) sport quads are hanging by a thread and the 4x4 atv market is pretty stagnant compared to where it was too. it just shows how many true enthusiasts there actually was as driving a utv is nothing like RIDING a quad. the UTVs hold a lot more beer though!
@nathanl50913 жыл бұрын
@@powersportsenthusiast1986 I agree, it's mostly utvs you see now. I have a side by side to now. Definitely not the same. Not as fun as an atv in my opinion.

@@nathanl5091 i truthfully have nothing against the vehicles themselves, it just really sucks to see how many people "jumped ship" to get into them. besides the brand names and amount of wheels, atvs and utvs dont have much else in common. to me the powersports sector that seems to have the largest percentage of serious, hard core riders is dirt bikes. i like them all though, just my observations

I always wanted to ride the raptor but where I’m from it’s hard to get your hands on one to try and living in the northern Ontario the price is much more
