MANY owners of 1st and 2nd gen FJ/Tracers note these issues. I suspect the 2022 and newer models corrected many is not all of these design flaws. I have test ridden both of the bikes now. I just felt at home on the Tracer 9 GT far far more. drove out of the dealer on the yammie and was comfortable immediately. The dash on the Tracer looks silly but honestly once your riding you dont notice it and i found the layout actually quite good. I also disagree on the ergonomics. test riding both for an hour i felt the tracer was better for ergo and looks which is two points you gave the the XR. i currently ride a 2012 XJ6 diversion and it starts to become uncomfortable at 1.5hrs and useless for longer than that for me. I rode tthe tracer for 1hr and felt so fresh my body felt no worse than being in a car really. givs great confidence for commuting and touring I would hands down by the Tracer (and think i actually will). I would also hands down pay a bit more for the Tracer if the right hand screen could be used for phone connection and if it was keyless ride but wouldnt stop me buying one now necessarily - but might make me hold off for the 2022 model to see if they add those.

@@andy42x I had a 2009. Really nice bike, but there was a very dangerous problem with fuel fittings failing and leaking gas directly onto the header. It was a known problem for years and BMW did nothing for out of warranty owners. Until recent lawsuits caused them to have a change of heart. The latest things showing up are the plastic cable to throttle plate attachment failing without warning. The repair is approx $1200 each. These things along with the final drive failures have taken a great long distance touring machine and turned it to a machine I don't trust anymore. The new water cooled bikes are fantastic ,but how will the hold up overtime? I'm switching back to the Yamahas I grew up on.
@markheinig3 жыл бұрын
For anybody who assumes the Yamaha would have lower maintenance costs, I would point out that in the US Yamaha specifies a 4,000 service interval (excluding valves). If you're going to put miles on this bike, servicing will happen more frequently than most (all?) BMWs so over time the total costs will probably be quite close. You'll also enjoy the hassle of more frequent servicing so you're costs will be higher in terms of your time. That's just considering maintenance costs. Costs in time and money of ride-ending reliability issues will most likely favor the Yamaha.

@@NothingToProve Hi! So are you saying that Tiger 900gt IS the BEST of 3? ....It has 93 HP and wayy more expensive here in Spain. Same tecnology on the BMW cost me 13.300€. Instead of 16.400€ the Tiger. Now i dont know what to do. Even tho Tiger IS better i think i never go offroad. Only go to work and some twisties. I Guess the BMW is more than enough for me.thanks

I had one as a loaner bike and before taking it back I washed it. Once those TFT's get droplets of water on them, you can't see feeces on them. Not even the speed, which is the biggest number there. Now imagine you get caught by rain ....Other than that, the wierdly arranged buttons and the uncomfortable ergonomics (but that may be just for my body ) it's an amazing bike.

Yamaha reports that the load capacity of this motorcycle is 193 kg. So if you take into account the weight of two people + the weight of the trunks - there is almost no more space for any cargo. besides, the small ground clearance of only 135 mm is worrying. Chassis may rub against asphalt

What were your complaints about the Tracer? I was looking into buying 2022 model as second bike but seeing terrible complaints about the split TFT display. Many reviews say in the sun it is hard to see because of glare and words too small. They supposedly upgraded the display in 2023 and its bigger now.

#5 “Looks” my partner just also commented that the F900XR is much prettier. Seriously though those roads you ride look so smooth that any bike is going to seems good. On the tricky narrow lanes and various busy roads in south west England the F900XR is a great bike. (My partner said the pillion on the F900XR is much better than the Tiger 900 GT too.) Sure, there are better bikes for different roads (horses for courses), but I can recommend the XR as a good all-rounder. Cheers and thanks from the UK.

@Paul B - if by “agricultural, you mean combine harvester or tractor, then no I don’t find it agricultural. It’s a twin so I expect a bit of character. How long have you been riding a XR? It’s a brilliant bike for me, so tend to look at all it’s many advantages. I agree about having to get used to the foot brake. I’ve had many bikes, Triumph, BMW, Kawasaki, Honda & Suzuki. I no longer look for the perfect bike, only what suits me at the time. Cheers.

@@TheAskme32 The key on the 2020 Tracer is wedged between the handle bars and the display. I have small hands, and it’s a pain to reach into the small area. They moved it on the 2021. Much more ergonomic

You refer to "active suspension". Do you mean electronically adjustable to various settings or the suspension changes its damping according to road conditions reacting in milliseconds etc? These are two very different things.
@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
Yes, yes and no. There are just two pre-set settings for the Electronically Controled Suspension, no user defined 🙁 I've copied from Yamaha.com for your reading pleasure 😁: KYB Electronically Controlled Suspension Jointly developed with KYB to deliver both sporty performance and a comfortable ride, the TRACER 9 GT features an electronically controlled suspension. The suspension provides optimum damping force that is based on real-time running conditions for great riding comfort and feel from the road. Based on input from the 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the Hydraulic Unit (HU), the Suspension Control Unit (SCU) calculates the optimum settings for suspension damping. The damping adjustment mechanism is solenoid-driven which enables changes to the damping force to be reflected quickly, and big damping force changes are possible. This suspension system generates steady damping force even when the suspension piston is moving slower, which contributes to stabilizing the motorcycle’s attitude when starting from a stop as well as stabilizing the chassis attitude when accelerating, braking and cornering. The electronically controlled system controls the rebound and compression damping for the front fork and rebound damping for the rear shock.

@NothingToProve3 жыл бұрын
I'd probably take the Tiger in that comparison, just better cockpit, TFT and all around electronics with connectivity. Powertrain is where I'd give the Tiger the advantage but just ever so slightly over the Tracer...they are really close now with what Yamaha did with this gen. Oh and sound of the Tiger is better, imho.

Get a givi screen for the tiger 900gt and you can ride with your helmet open. Like sitting in a car, not buffeting at all.

Great review. I'm coming from a BMW F750 and you helped me to decide between Tracer and Tiger. About the screen look, it doesn't bother me and is not as bad as I was thinking. After about 2.000 km (about 1250 miles) I'm really loving the bike, except the seat which is too firm... Only miss 2 things from bmw: fuel consumption and front whell (19''). Btw, mine is a normal version. Added quickshift (love it), heated grips and topcase. The more I ride it, the more I like it!!!

Well done, you have looked at the exact two bikes I have been interested in buying. Maybe the 1200RS gets the extras you were stating (plus extra weight) but it comes at a price (quite a big jump at that) even though you do get upgraded in suspension, cam shaft and shaft driven etc. However, they are completely different bikes so what do I know. The TFT screen for this bike is so annoying. I can't understand why there wasn't any connectivity with mobile devices. It would have made so much sense if the right screen side was set up for connectivity possibly showing Google maps if possible. That would have really made it so cool. Moreso, 2021 models of most bikes are integrating mobile connectivity. Besides that, I love everything else about this bike

I think the Tracer 9 looks great!! I'm on the market for a new bike and have been considering this (base version), the Tracer 7 and the Tiger Sport 660. The T9 would cost me 3k more than the TS660, but comes with €1000 free accessories (as does the T7 which is €2.5k cheaper). The Tiger comes with panniers included. I'm a new rider, just passed my test and only have 1000km on a '09 Bandit 650S and prior to that a 1500km trip on a Honda XR150L (through rural Vietnam over two weeks). I'm 187cm, 100kg, with 32' inseam. I'm looking for something to use for weekend fun rides, hopefully some multi day tours and eventually 2-up riding once I gain more experience (and my gf comes around to the idea). Hoping to do a Europe tour next summer. What do you think would suit me best and is best bang for the buck? Hesitant to drop all my savings for the T9 but it does seem like something I could keep for years...im test riding the TS660 this weekend curious if it will be too cramped.
