In April 2023, in outer Darwin - Australia - whilst crossing the north-south Stuart Highway at around 40 kph (25 mph) my right-hand-drive 2016 Nissan X-Trail was hit on the left (passenger) side by a north-bound Nissan Pathfinder doing 90 kph (55 mph) - the highway's speed-limit. My car remained intact, with 3 air-bags deployed on its' left side, though not on the front or right (driver) side (as these were not impacted). I was the sole occupant of my car and the other driver was uninjured. I suffered seat-belt injuries (a broken rib and 2 minor vertebrae compressions) and spent 2 nights in Royal Darwin hospital (after an ambulance and CAT-scan). My car was a "statutory write-off". I had been given an eye injection earlier that day (to prevent macular degeneration) and thought my vision was okay to drive home - but my eye doctor - and the drug company - did not warn me that the drug might temporarily affect my perception of on-coming vehicles - their distance and speed. I'm looking at buying a 2023 X-Trail, with my insurance pay-out. PS I've written to my doctor's professional college, the drug company and our Therapeutic Goods Administration (our version of the US FDA), to improve their guidelines and warnings for post-procedure patient care - i.e. to ensure that the patient does not drive home and has a taxi or family member, to pick them up. (Kym Andrew, 73, in Darwin. My X-Trail had a 5-star ANCAP safety rating - the highest level)
