We put the 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 through our official InsideEVs 70 MPH Highway Range Test. By the end of the range test, we soared past the iX's EPA range rating of 324 miles as well as the final results of every other EV we've ever tested except for the Lucid Air and the Mercedes EQS 450+.
Intro & Testing Rules 00:00 - 09:12
Driving to 50% State of Charge 09:12 - 11:49
Driving To 0% State of Charge 11:49 - 16:59

I've owned a few BMWs (X5M, M Roadster, and M5), and I can attest to BMW cruise control being in kph rather than mph. That means each cruise control speed increment/decrement is in 1kph or 0.6mph. Plus BMW uses a +/-2kph error margin for any cruise control set speed, which is supposed to be easier on the engine and increase fuel economy. I am in line to replace my M cars with EVs. If Elon is going to charge BMW prices for his barebones cars, then I'm very much inclined to just get a real BMW. This review is very relevant to my decision, so Thank you Tom😁.

Hi, in Europe the speedometers have to show faster speeds by law. If you set the speedo to show true GPS speed at 70mph you would be showing a slower than reality speed at 120+ mph. That’s because with the centrifugal force acting at those high Erving wheels the diameter increases with the speed, changing the factor speed to reving speed.

The Model S LR can certainly get that just not the Supercar tri-motor Plaid version The ix has as much interior space as a Model Y. But a Model Y only comes with an 80 kWh pack while the iX has a 106 kWh pack. Cram a 106 kWh pack in a Model Y and see how far it goes. Also even the Model S LR has a smaller pack at 100 kWhs.

Great range test as usual Tom, but think of it, BMW is likely reducing the rating so that at the 2nd or 3rd year, it would still hit EPA rating with normal battery degradation.

However, at least based on the experience of my fellow BMW i3 owners, BMW's battery management systems are exceptionally efficient in keeping battery degradation to a minimum... There are owners in the Facebook Group who are running i3 models with in excess of 100,000 miles on the odometer and yet they still achieve the same miles-per-charge as when they were new.

105kWh/345miles = 304 Wh/mi which is astounding at any speed for a vehicle that big and heavy! The 20" wheels are helping that impressive consumption. If it was on 21" wheels the range would probably be 10% less or 315 and the consumption 10% more, roughly 335. BMW is doing a terrific job. Wounder why Audi hasn't improved the etron efficiency?

Kudos once again TOM or doing a flawless real world range test, and kudos to BMW for producing a vehicle that will actually surpass the Tesla model Y in the real world driving conditions. It is a shame that the Tesla has never come close to meeting let alone exceeding the EPA ranges in the real world. And to top all of that the Teslas will lose one percent of battery charge every day doing nothing for the driver. Can you publish any observations about loss of range while the car is just parked on the BMW Ix?

I'm really upset that they didn't go with an 800V system on this car. It's literally perfect for me in every single way - the M version is really quick, I love the styling (including the front grille), I love the interior, I love that it's a spacious off-road capable SUV and after seeing this I LOVE the range (though where I live we do around 140kph on the highway so it certainly wouldn't be as good), I can even overlook the terrible infotainment! BUT if I get an EV there's no way I'm going with a 400 volt system - it will be obsolete in a couple of years and a best-case maximum of 200kW when DC fast charging is absolutely not enough for this expensive of a car with this big of a battery. It's genuinely infuriating because it's so good but that flaw ruins it for me, instead I'm looking at a Taycan Cross Turismo even though that car is less efficient and has less range - the 270kW charging and the charging curve more than make up for it! I have the same complaint for the EQS SUV, really great car and I'm sure the AMG version will be pretty quick too but it's on 400V and has an even larger battery pack...

Impressive range, but there is a technical error that brings it down a bit in reality. You mentioned the vehicle shows 72.5 MPH for true 70MPH, or 3% error. Using the miles traveled on the instrument cluster results in the same error. So the vehicle actually only traveled 97% of the miles stated on the cluster. Still impressive, but you need to apply a correction factor to the miles result - just like you did for setting the speed. The efficiency numbers displayed on the cluster are off by the same amount for the same reason.
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

Nope. We always check the route to Google maps and the speedometer and odometer aren't in perfect sync. The miles traveled are very accurate. When we do these range tests the final odometer reading is within 1 mile of what our Google maps route calculates.

@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Thanks for that follow-up. I found some supporting info that says the same. Basically says that under all conditions and tolerances that your actual speed must never exceed the displayed speed. So they artificially bump the displayed speed up - but don't alter the miles traveled. It is interesting though, as the tires wear this is only going to get more skewed from actual speed. Anyway - thanks for clarifying this, and the additional details of your process. iX certainly a great real world range vehicle. Looking forward to seeing how the Cadillac Lyriq stacks up.

Björn EV channel tested the small battery 40 version and only got beaten by 10minutes in the 1000km challange. 40 is the way to go with bright interior, black exterior, no pano roof needed, 20 inch lightning grey rim is the best. The 50 version is a totally failed concept, especially regarding the total cost of the big battery iX. If You want the best iX buy it with air suspension but not mandatory with the smaller battery. So far only the Chinese and Koreans have been able to follow teslas lead on more than 1 of those categories. Decades old factories will also factor in here, yes you can re tool a legacy plant. But it won't be as cost efficient and energy efficient as a new build. Also different equipment is needed to handle pack's so more capital intensive.
