This car is so efficient that I can do most of the charging at home and even if I need to stop along the way never need more than 10 minutes of charge …. Compared to my MXP 2020 this one is miles better.

Pretty solid charging. Not class leading but even charging to 50% on a road trip is good given the great range.

4:30 Just FYI. The 350 kW Delta units that EVgo is install can actually provide up to 540 A, but so far it, it appears that only Teslas using the Tesla CCS1 adapter are asking for more than 500 A.

Thanks. Good video. For the range you were able to achieve (340 miles at 70 mph) the iX has great appeal. However, most people/families cannot afford $90K for a vehicle even with reduced normal maintenance (oil changes, etc). It even becomes more difficult as interest rates rise. Perhaps manufacturers are building too many features into EV’s right now because of the “early adopters” who can afford paying more for a vehicle. Hopefully, battery and charging technology will improve quickly over the next few years so that more people can afford EV’s. Also, the charging network has to grow to support long distance travel.

A couple of thoughts: 1) Dual batteries with separate plugs to halve the charge times instead of one massive battery. 2) When EV pricing gets down to reasonable levels, then more will consider them. 3) I would make more stops, while on a trip, and charge only in the "fat" spot, only stopping for about 10 minutes and never worrying about running out. 100% only overnight. 4) Gas stations should rethink themselves as "Energy Stations" and add their own charging points.

This thing is surprisingly good. It has nothing to do with performance but I kind of wrote it off for the weird front fascia and because the i4 doesn’t compare as favorably to the Model 3 as I would have liked. It’s too bad it’s so expensive but BMWs were never cheap I guess. It will be interesting to charge one of these on a V3 supercharger when they open them up since it could push past 500 amps if BMW allows it.
@e-redj
@e-redj Жыл бұрын
It could, but if BMW didn’t design the system to accept it it will not make a difference. BMW for that has to develop a way to identify Tesla chargers and then implement a different charging strategy in order to thermally take care of those extra Amps. Yes, they could do it, but so doubt it. 🤷‍♂️

Hey Kyle, very nice test. Do you know the difference between kW reported by DCFC vs kW reported in vehicle? I’d like to know the charging losses at 500 amps from EVSE cable heating and vehicle charger. Due to exponential impact of current on power losses (I^2 * R), substantial power could be wasted on a 400v architecture. I plan to compare my ‘22 model S long range charging speed, 0 to 300 miles, with a Lucid later this year. Who do you think will win? 300 miles was chosen because at my old age, it’s impossible to drive any further without a restroom break. Maybe your dad agrees.

Very interesting. I hope you are getting some independent consulting money off of this as it would seem to be valuable input for them. Not that BMW doesn’t have the knowledge, but I would imagine you do this closer to the way owners will (road tripping then going some commercial charging location), rather than BMW testers might.

5:00 Kyle, I think it would be a valuable service to really emphasize to your viewers that 500 A EVs really need to be given priority to these 500 A chargers over "800 V" EVs that don't see nearly as much benefit. Saving a couple of minutes in an EV6 or Ioniq 5 is nowhere near as valuable as saving 20, 30, or maybe even 40 minutes in high-current EVs like the BMW iX, Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC HUMMER EV, etc.

I just got a Bolt EUV because that is what I can afford and since i do most of my charging at home it doesn’t make a difference if it will slow charge at DC chargers. I took it on an 800mile round trip and I rather spend more time on a charger than paying tripple the price. Great video..

Good information. It looks like they are getting better. Still a way to go before I purchase one, but this is better. When they hit the same price as a gas model for the same size vehicle, get the distance to a minimum of 400-mile HWY in all weather and conditions, and charge time down to 10 minutes or less empty to full charge I will buy one. Right now, they are still not practical, but improving.

So, THoguht BMW had fallen asleep with EVs, but so far, I4 and IX are nice cars I'd consider if I could afford them. Sounds like, I7 would be nice too. I wish we would get stuff like the EQC they have in Europe, or the EQE sedan I think it is? or the little MB van (EQ something... M? N? something)

Hi Kyle, thanks for this. Why doesn't the industry or you create a charging efficiency level where the curve falls off a cliff so you move on to the next charger? I understand your comments but give a numerical number to tell each vehicle owner which is the optimum charge level just before the cliff happens. I agree most vehicles will be roughly close to the 70% level but some may be 62% and others 72% and others maybe can go to 80%. I am so sick of these 10-80% trial examples where the last 10-15% of those examples are so inefficient. Every vehicle has that cliff so put a number on each vehicle just before the cliff happens. Create your own Z-score. Or for EV's call it an E score. For example Rivian is close to perhaps a 68 or 69-70 level before it goes from 135KW to well under 100KW. If it is at 68% SOC, give it a 68 E score. And give an E score for every vehicle you test. That would I think be the best stat ever for every vehicle and give every owner a great indication of their maximum efficiency and gives them impetus to move on to the next charging station when they hit that number. Thanks for your consideration.

@@d.e.7467 Afaik the GAC Aion was in the EV news Q4 2021 already. They guy claims 480 kW, but the charger only shows 239.8 kW later on which is about as much as a Hyundai or Kia can do today (20-80 % in 15 min.). The European Ionity network is 350 kW only which can charge a 75 kWh battery 0-80 % in 10 min already as soon as battery technology allows it. This is why I asked.
