These cars are incredibly different. BMW is focused on performance, luxury and tech while Volvo is focused on safety-tech , Scandinavian design and sustainability. If I had to own one of them I’d narrowly pick the Volvo because they do slightly more better.

There other more important things to consider when purchasing a car of this quality. To me 1 second quicker is not so important. Running .costs, comfort, reliability, luggage space. Etc. Both nice cars

I had x5 and xc90. I never thought I’d see a volvo faster than a bmw. This means 45e is a failure. A combination of not enough power with ofroader wanna be. This video make me realize I want a Porsche.😂

Something very satisfying (and childish) about seeing a 7 seat Volvo tank with a BMW behind it, rather than the other way around. The XC90 T8 in gold, debadged and on smaller wheels, would be quite the sleeper. I'm assuming the smaller, slightly lighter XC60 T8 would be even faster. Thanks for the review.

Well, I have mixed feelings with this test. For sure, both cars are quite powerful and as shown here, the Volvo might be a bit faster in acceleration - with a fully loaded battery. But the battery lasts in both cars for approx. 50-60 Kilometers and then these 2,5 tons SUVs have mainly to rely on there regular engines. And here the BMW comes with a 3 liter 6-cylinder vs. a 2 liter 4-cylinder in the Volvo. And even if the Volvo engine has more power on paper, in reality the BMW engine is MUCH stronger and fits better to a car like these both. I could do a test drive on the autobahn (I‘m from Germany) and this was the decision driver for me, even if I like the design of the Volvo better (and had a XC90 D5 previously).

See how modern hybrids work. They ALWAYS maintain 2-3% of battery and recharge from ICE engine when needed, in some of them it’s actually a hidden capacity (the battery lvl shows 0%) and they kick the electric engine to help the ICE engine to push the vehicle. So overall no, you won’t loose all that electric boost even after 1000km with no charging. Just something to consider:)

Old T8 keeps atleast 2kW of battery capacity all the time, plus the power mode slightly charges the battery upfront, not sure why is that.

Yeah it doens't look like they used launch control on the BMW, not sure if the XC90 has that. The main problem is the XC90 Recharge is kind of pile (see savagegeese review), and I would expect that from a supercharged turbocharged hybrid 4 banger

@@pgivno4241 bmw downtuned the B58 in the 45e models to 286hp instead of 340hp. the new X5 50e has 490hp (313hp ICE 190hp electric) and 700nm so that would smoke the volvo. also very interesting that in this video they didn't use the launch control feature on the BMW :) first run, the reaction time of the BMW driver was slow.

Actually, the two cars are pretty close. Especially because the BMW has a very heavy battery. Large enough to necessitate the removal of the third row, so that's a lot of extra weight.
