Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.

Thank you for actual off-road testing. Most reviewers in Europe just say "eh it'll work for gravel roads and farm tracks" and then never talk about it again, no tests too. I mean it fits the target demographic of these cars but still. On your channel you can find a gem that is very capable while not being a gas guzzler or an unrefined ride.

Thanks for the support! I do end up being surprised by some vehicles in my testing either in a good way or in a bad way. It's always good to actually test them rather than make assumptions from a spec sheet.

In Europe? Are you sure? Because it is not yet on the market and there is not even a "previous version" of this model. In my country (Italy) perhaps it will arrive for the first time next month with only the 2.0 197cv fullhybrid engine (AWD-i with rear electric motor or FWD).

I appreciate how in South Africa test drive the AWD Cross unlike anything I've seen here in the states or anywhere else. They push it to the limit on the back desert bush trails, all kind of mud, mtns, hills, ect. Absolutely amazing how well it did...

I’d never dream of taking a car like this off road. The AWD system for this is designed to keep it on the road. It seems like it would be perfectly fine commuting to work and from work on the interstate during winter months.

True, but there is correlation as a steep snow covered paved hill may be similar to this steep dirt hill while lifting a wheel (because of equal loss of traction).

Nice review. Picked a L model up. Awd works amazing in rain on the east coast. Not planning on doing off reading of any kind besides the occasional dirt/fire roads. Good to know. Thank you

This is probably the crossover with the shortest suspension travel in the front I guess.I have a hatcback car and I'm sure it has much more in the front.Rear is ok in my opinion

There are quite a few that really don't have much travel at all. I do agree though that this one has very little! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great review. Thanks for the heads up. I’d love to see a review of mid-2010’s 1/2-ton trucks(the ones most people can realistically afford to buy these days if they need a truck) to see how they fare on this course. Especially the K2XX GM trucks.

Thanks for the support! Honestly they aren't much different as far as the steep hill climb goes. They can be had with the G80 rear locker, so if you take a look at any of my 1/2-ton Chevy off-road videos, minus the ZR2, then you'll get a good feel there. High speed will probably be quite different, and age and maintenance will play a much bigger role in something 5+ years old for that area. I'll see if I can get one to test.

@@EngineAdventures What about the DS RAM 1500? It has that weird transfer case. The other transfer case is that classic 2H, 4H, 4L, but it would be interesting to see how the Anti-Slip Differential performs.

@@EngineAdventures It's probably also more convenient for you because the DS RAM 1500 is still built today as the RAM 1500 Classic.

I'll see if I can find one to test. I know Dodge/Ram keeps going back and forth between a Torsen style and a clutch style limited slip, not sure what the DS or DT offers.

Did you remove the temporary protective vinyl cover from the camera lens? Because I'm betting it left the factory with one. If it's still fuzzy like that, check and see if it has one. If so, remove it and watch how much clearer it gets.

I didn't check specifically for that, but I've never had a media vehicle with those still on them. Most of the Toyotas I have tested have terrible camera systems (4 Runner, Tacoma, 2021 and older Sequoia and Tundras).

Very detailed reviews both on and off-road 👍. The car performed as expected in the cross-axle test. In Europe it will come with awd, but only as a hybrid ( with a system similar to that of RAV4, Highlander etc), so worst offroad performance is expected.

For 2023 they will be offering the hybrid in the US as well. This will move it from 3 trim levels to 6 or 7 I believe. All hybrid versions will be AWD. Maybe I'll get one of those versions to test next year. Thanks again Gio!

This type of car is doing very well on the road like this. For me I don't care to much about off roading, maybe to take me up so e hill, mainly how it would behave on the snow.

This test is actually a very good demonstration of how it would do on a snowy or icy road. If it's really steep the vehicle will struggle, but you should be fine for most snow covered paved roads.

Nice review 👍 One question, when you turn off traction control, is it still in AWD? Nice small crossover. Not much has changed to warrant trading in my SX4 but it did very well. It would be nice to see how it goes in the snow? Especially with some decent traction tires? Go on try the hill! Air down Lol 😝

It stays in AWD, but doesn't cut engine power or use the brake based traction control. I thought about the steep hill, but I'm pretty wary now about damaging someone else's vehicle.

Yes but it relies heavily on traction control for brake based LSD. The AWD doesn’t work well at all with it disabled

I was referring to driving in snow and mud. You don’t want traction control during those conditions. Thanks for the comment.

That might be the big difference between the Corolla and my SX4. The SX4 has a switch to turn it from 2WD to 4WD auto and 4WD lock. The car is awesome off-road, only let down by a lack of ground clearance. Thanks again.

Maybe Toyota is still using analog components in their backup camera signal path. It's cheaper to do that but the conversion absolutely ruins the quality.

Could be. They have clearer cameras in some of their vehicles but most I would say are sub par.

its funny how in every single awd torque distribution screen you get on this car the torque transfer is just about perfect every single time and YET you're not going anywhere... my ex lied to me i don't need my brand new car to do so as well...

Haha, I kept trying to see a difference and I think it shows front to rear power distribution fairly well, but not so much side to side.

Yeah, sometimes I chicken out. I do as much as I can, but I really shouldn't be doing any damage to the vehicles and there was very little chance of this making the steep climb.

Nice. Probably all the AWD I would need for where I usually would drive. I think this is comparable to the Subaru Crosstrek in specs but the Crosstrek will do off-roading better

I haven't tested a Crosstrek yet, but Subaru has been less impressive than most people think. I do have a video up of an Outback if you're interested.

For sure and....the Crosstrek has much more ground clearance than the Cross Corolla! And X-Mode, that will work in that situation as shown here!
