I got a GXL hybrid and only just reach 500km. I love the new screen and the wireless apple car play. The lane trace assist and the the cruise control are doing a great job as well. Currently my average fuel consumption is between 4.2 to 4.4L/100km so really happy about it.

Another great test thanks Paul. I know you're limited by the manufacturer in terms of what media vehicles are available but most of us looking at this type of vehicle can't stretch to the top model. Would love to see more tests at this end of the market somewhere more typical of the middle of the range.

Regarding the Corolla Cross, it's essentially the same car. The more "luxurious" packages come with leather seats, an automatic driver's seat, a panoramic sunroof, an automatic tailgate, an autonomous driving system, better speakers, and a faster multimedia processor. While it might seem like a lot, I've personally seen that these differences aren't crucial in practice.

The top model is probably too close in price to the Rav 4 Cruiser which although not the top spec for that model is better equipped, bigger, more powerful and a better name badge than this.

Great test Paul. From my personal experience in dealing with Toyota after moving from a 20 year stint with mazda, as I want to transition to an EV through an Atmos Hybrid, the Cross meets all our requirements. The only down side of dealing with Toyota is the long wait times and extremely poor customer management. Being assured I was one of the first to order the best estimate Toyota can provide is 2023.

@@TheGillederais , every choice is a compromise, I suppose. I haven't driven the CX5 myself, but have also heard that it has a quiet cabin. But I'd like to buy a low emissions SUV if possible and the current CX5 Turbo that I'd like for performance is a bit of a gas guzzler. Same with the Subaru Outback XT. I'm wary of new models, so let's see how Mazda goes with their new hybrid SUV models.

Hey Paul, weird request but when you're showing the smart phone mirroring and connectivity, can you please scroll over to the farthest left screen when iPhone mirroring? This is the screen that shows you a map, your directions, and your media. That screen's usability is contingent on the resolution of the display -- something that manufacturers never mention in the specs. Low resolution / cheap displays tend to squash everything in and can be annoying to use, while a high resolution display shows off more info and is easier to read. Would be good to see it when you're showing off phone mirroring. Thank you for these reviews!

I got here in New Zealand the station wagon, but as Japanese import which is way nicer than the one offered new in the country. It has the same nice soft touch materials as this Corolla Cross, but with nicer seats. I'd say I'm glad I picked the wagon. Is surprisingly nice to drive, really good handling (even tho is 2wd) and it has the 1.8 hybrid engine. Is quite slow as you can see with the 2.0, but still feels ok for most of the time. Is loud as well as the Corolla Cross, specially on hard acceleration and with the bad roads in NZ the factory tyres are super noisy too. Theres definitely things it could be better, but after almost a year owning this car, theres lots of positive things, and actually quite surprising (the hybrid tech, most of the materials inside, comfort on road trips, how practical is the interior space even tho is not huge, etc), is a car that I dont regret buying it all.

The Toyota Corolla cross might be a benchmark in hybrid small SUVs but as normal in all Toyotas they are not built for tall people. Why in this day and age they build cars for small people only. I could not even sit down in the car and I am 6’6”” or 198 cms. The Nissan qashqai has more leg room than the Toyotas. Really sick of small cabin space in Toyotas in general.

I have watched quite a few video reviews on this vehicle, that I was hoping to purchase. But when I went to the dealer/showroom and sat in it, and viewed it, it is really VERY small! In full disclosure, I am 6'2" (around 188cm). I went to sit in the drivers seat, And when I did, I went to adjust the leg room only to discover it was already in its rearmost position! :( And that would be uncomfortable. Then I went to see how much space would the back passenger have in that position, and guess what? Both seats were nearly touching! Meaning that no one would ever be able to sit behind me! The rear, even with seats down is VERY limited, and not flat or even nearly flat (a modern standard). In the end, this vehicle has a very limited potential audience. This vehicle is only for folks of short/small physical stature, for 1 or 2 person household, for commuting to work, and for those who will never have to carry adults in the back seat. Want to go with your girlfriend/wife to pick up her (small) parents at the airport? You"ll have to rent a car, unless they don't mind uncomfortably contorting themselves WHILE having luggage on their laps! None of the many reviews I watched on this vehicle noted this issue which was so obvious. :(

I want to clarify the term eCVT. It appears that most of the car reviewers in Australia get it wrong. The basic mechanisms of eCVT and CVT are completely dissimilar. eCVTs, such as those found on the Toyota RAV4, are significantly different from belt- and chain-driven continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) eCVT is a different, more generic name for the hybrid powertrain installed in all pure Toyota hybrid vehicles. Toyota calls it "Hybrid Synergy Drive". It is made up from an internal combustion engine, two electric motors/generators and a pretty simple planetary gearset, called the "Power Split Device". This transmission is referred to as "electric CVT" or "eCVT", because it behaves very much like a standard CVT, although it works based on an entirely different principle - and avoids about all of the disadvantages of a conventional CVT.
@CarExpertAus
@CarExpertAus Жыл бұрын
With the exception of the incredibly thrashy sound you get from a conventional CVT.
@xukegenius2
@xukegenius2 Жыл бұрын
@@CarExpertAus the droning noise is more due to the Atkinson cycle engine which has high thermo efficiency than conventional engines and it is most efficient when it is in the higher rev range. When the petrol engine is engaged, the planetary gear system will choose the most efficient gear band, i.e. the higher rev range (therefore noisy). This is not so much about the word CVT as the eCVT has nothing to do with the CVT except for the misleading name
@sophiezhao1992

Good review. Thanks. With the rear boot you can set it to 5 different positions. You get an all important spare tyre with a two wheel drive. I have ordered an Atmos, Khaki Green. The seconds to reach 100 k/hr etc doesn't bother me. Easy to get into and out of it for when I get older. The moon roof is OK but I would prefer it without. I don't need it and will keep it closed. I've had melanoma years ago. I am a senior. :-). I get 4.7 L/100k. Looking forward to doing some travel in it. Ordered mine almost 12 months ago. I took delivery of mine this week. Its almost exactly the same as the one in your video. But I definitely won't be hooning. The salesman told me if I ordered it now, I would be waiting 18 months for it. Don't bother rushing out to buy this car. I spoke to major Toyota dealer in Melbourne last week (early Nov 2022). This model, Corolla-Cross Atmos, AWD/4WD, hybrid, has an 18-months-long waiting list. And this is just a gross approximation, could be longer or shorter, nobody has a clue. The price (about $55-grand, drive-away), therefore, is also unknown and is sure to go up during this long wait time. So the purchase contract is just giving you the right to jump on the indefinite waiting list, nothing more, for about $1000 refundable deposit. I might add this is just like RAV4 hybrid and most other Toyota hybrid passenger cars and SUV/CUV cars.

i have a corolla cross with 2.0 engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating except merging and hyper mill when ever possible. so l smile when i see the gas pump, and its a different kind of fun to squeeze for MPG.

I looked at the GXL version today. I don't like the step in the boot when the seats are folded down. Also this model shown has a 'tyre repair kit" instead of a spare. This is the most ridiculous concept in a country as big as Australia. A spare is needed, even the thin ones. So my choice is now between the Yaris Cross - mostly flat when seats are folded down and a spare with the GLX or the Rav 4, whose AWD includes a spare tyre. Thanks for the review of the top of the range model!

For that price range one would be crazy not to spend just a little bit extra and go for the more spacious, powerful and extra feature laden RAV4 hybrid with very little difference in fuel economy between the two. Only reason I could see someone spending $50K plus on a Corolla cross Atmos is the extremely long current wait time on a RAV4 hybrid, otherwise if the RAV was more readily available, I could see the Atmos sitting in car yards with little interst from buyers.

I don't know about Aus, but in NZ there is no hybrid Sportage yet, you'd have to go for the smaller Niro, which at equivalent spec is more expensive than the Corolla Cross.

@@robertceroli3512 TPMS makes a huge difference if you care about your tyres (those things that allow the car to grip the road) at all. It is pathetic that ADRs don't mandate TPMS and driver viewable displays. Given the significant importance of your tyres for your basic safety when driving a vehicle, you should be checking their inflation before every trip - a TPMS with display makes that a simple exercise.

With 390l the pram might take up as much space as the red luggage bag for the AWD if not slightly more. You definitely need to bring your pram to check as all prams are different. On a different channel they did the pram test and it was a good fit, but that was for FWD not AWD.

I cancelled my RAV XSE order once Corolla Cross was released. Corolla Cross sizing is better for tight city parking spaces I need to deal with. I cannot afford a high quality EV so a quality hybrid engine 2.0 is a good option for now. Considering it’s going to cost $50K I do worry about it’s future value post 2030 when there are a lot more EVs on Australian roads. I agonise over whether to stick with my 2016 Mazda 3 and drive for another 10 years. It’s so hard to know what ICE used car market is going to look like in 10 years.

Buy a car to drive for transport and enjoyment and move on with life.. a car isnt an investment its a depreciating asset so unless you are changing cars because you've got the means to do so or your Mazda isnt meeting your needs than don't do it. Mazda make fantastic cars and the only reason I would change now is if you need something higher up or not so low to the ground. My good friend has a Mazda3 and its a wonderful car to sit in and so comfortable.. I just personally find it too low which is the case for the BMW sedan I have.. I like SUVs. You don't buy a car to then worry what will it be worth in ten years, it will be worth little either way. Especially if you paid 27-40k for a mazda3....I have a few cars... & my 2021 BMW 330i at $97,000 I guarantee with less than 30,000km on it is probably worth around $65,000 now a year and a quarter old. So its lost the entire cost of a 3. I knew that when I bought it... the same goes for my GLC300 4matic a $115,000 car, is probably worth $85,000 now and just hit 31,000km travelled and is almost 3 years old I believe.. You've just got to get a car that meets your lifestyle needs, that is comfortable and ticks the boxes for your budget and hope you make the right decision and not worry about the market in the future. Especially since some car manufacturers have said by 2024/2026 they wont produce ICE cars.. thats great but we are not ready for that in Australia... our stubborn government has done nothing to aid in putting in chargers or infrastructure... stuff that existed when I visited Europe almost 10 years ago. So if you want to move towards that revolution I agree... a hybrid definitely makes sense. Only you can figure out the rest. but don't let thinking about future deter you because even if our government starts now.. we are nowhere close to let go of petrol powered vehicles because we simply wouldn't be able to get around at this point.

You cannot achieve optimal fuel consumption on a brand new car, as an engineer would always expect excess of 6500km on a new engine to be fully run in and above. Therefore achieving around 700km/tank and 4-4.4lph on this car.
