2022 Ford Maverick: XLT vs Lariat. Trim Level Showdown

Thanks again for tuning in to another episode of the Maverick Files! On today's episode we have a Maverick Lariat vs XLT. What are the differences, what should you buy, and is it worth it? Did they just slap a badge on the truck and charge more money, or are legitimate things added to the vehicle that make it worth the extra dough.

When I was building my Maverick, I couldn't justify the Lariat without it coming with the Heated steering wheel and heated seats. When I think "Luxury" trim I think of the Lariat and I would expect it to come with those options without another add on package. Thats why I stuck with the XLT with Luxury package, it was cheaper overall and still has the creature comforts I want.

I got the lariat hybrid and your right! The options for me were moonroof, spray in bedliner! I picked it up two days ago and it’s good but without heated seats, which I wanted and back up sensor’s, l don’t see five grand more than the XL ?

I actually found a stock ordered XLT Non Lux coming in so I jumped on that! I dont mind not having heated seats and will just get them aftermarket in the future if anything

I've always believed in the saying "go big or go home". Decided to go with a Carbonized Gray Lariat hybrid with the Luxury Package and power moonroof. Came to under $33K.

Went to the Orlando Car show today and oh man oh man this truck looks WAY BETTER in person that videos! And the amount of space I had sitting in the back of it was amazing! I sat in the back of a tacoma at the car show and I was cramped! I am 5'9 so on the short side for a guy so imagine being bigger than me in the back of a tacoma!

Couldn't agree more. That is partly why I am trying to put this car on video as much as possible. Photos just don't pain an accurate picture. That is my favorite part of it as well. Yes, the vehicle is small, but it is MASSIVE inside.

I do love the front and rear lighting on the lariat. The hot pepper red with the Lariat seats looks so good, but I have seen it with the Iconic Silver and it looked terrible. This the first video I watched which mentioned the difference in the rear tail lighting (which I really liked on the Lariat). I am in south Florida so I didn't need the heated seats, etc., but if I lived in a colder climate I would definitely go with the luxury packages. I ordered a carbonized gray hybrid XLT with just the trailer hitch, and full size spare. I have already purchased LED backup lights, a trifold bed cover, splash guards, 400 watt inverter for the rear with switch panel (aftermarket item), and hybrid ceramic wax/coating kit. Going forward I will be replacing the front turn signal bulbs with LED non-hyper flash white/orange replacements. I will also be doing ceramic window tint (needed in south Florida), spray in bed liner, console safe, and changing out more of the lighting to LED's. Also a USB dongle that will allow my to add apps, and control the screen wirelessly. I picked up some of these items during the black Friday sales, and saved some dollars compared to ordering direct from Ford, which probably would delay my vehicle's delivery. Thus is by far the best review comparison I've seen on this truck. I like the Ford red. I'm 59 so I want the all bells and whistles. However, I drive a lot so I need the hybrid to save on my fuel bill.

Great comparison video. This will be my 1st new vehicle purchase since 2003. I've always owned the full size F150 SuperCrew. But since retirement, I have no use for a full size truck. So I'm treating myself to a Lariat FX4 with the Lux package & all the goodies. The Maverick will satisfy everything that I need to do. That's my story & I'm sticking to it!! LOL Enjoy your videos. Thanks for this comparison! I have an XLT with lux package. I do not like leather interiors, so it seems like the only thing I am missing out on are the nicer headlights and tail lights. Not bad.

The Lux Package on the Lariat does provide some things that the XLT Lux does not, but I agree. The XLT is nice

I actually went with the cactus grey. Xlt lux package and sunroof and tonneau cover. Getting it undercoated too. I'm on Vancouver Island BC Canada. It hasn't arrived yet but I'm definitely looking forward to those nice mileage numbers... thanks for your video. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy the xlt.

Great comparison review! You always do a good job and it’s appreciated! I personally chose the XLT with Lux, AWD and Co-Pilot! While I would have bought Lariat with Lux, AWD and Co-Pilot we just didn’t like that bright blue on the seat covering! In you video the Blue Vinyl was just so Blue! One thing about the interior of Lariat, is not Leather! I know, disappointing fir that money you can’t get a leather interior!

👊🏽😁. The boojetta has given me the opportunity to order an XL 2.5L, 2k tow package, sunroof, and the center console 110 🔌. Of course in Cactus Gray. But the Lariat LUX with that brown leatherish interior is amazing. My favorite color is 🍊. So if the budget was able to get everything, I would take everything. 👊🏽😁 thank you Money Shift.

I agree, I really do like the interior. The seats look great, and are incredibly comfortable. Cyber Orange is a hell of a color, and agree with you 100%...if I could get it all, I certainly would've. GREAT spec on yours! The tow package, with the sunroof is great.

I originally built my xlt Lux and with options, I was already at 31. Bumped to lariat Lux for just a few grand more and I get the B&O sound, sound damp windshield, LC, pleather, and more. Just made sense. I plan to keep it 10 years so what’s an extra 3.5k spread over that time. Either way, especially in todays nutty economy, either option is a great bargain. Ordered Cactus Grey but switching to Hot Pepper Red.

If you plan to go that long, making the move to be optioned for what you truly want seems like the smart move. 3,500 is a small price to pay for what makes you happy!

@Russell Strunk I completely agree. I build the truck fully loaded with almost every package you can option on the vehicle and from the xlt to the lariat was a $4,000 difference. All the added amenities you get with a fully loaded lariat added up exceeds $4,000 if you were to buy them aftermarket and equip them on an XLT so I thought it was no brainer to go with the Lariat. This truck will be one of the nicest vehicles I’ve ever owned as far as options and interior goes. So I plan to keep it for a lifetime and enjoy the tech.

i Did the same thing! originally ordered and XLT lux.. but decided only a week after ordering i was going for the Lariat. I tend to keep cars for a very long time. Im 33 and have only owned 2 cars... a 1990 Cherokee and a 2007 Trailblazer, neither of them purchased new. This was the first new vehicle and I intend to have this thing for at least 10 years, so it was 100% worth it to get exactly what i wanted.

Reason I chose [hybrid] XLT with lux pkg is because I wanted all that extra stuff, plus I love the cloth seats as opposed to the Latriat’s “leather” seats. I hate leather seats. Price-wise, coming in under 30k is my goal too. Now, I just need my production date!

Thanks for the review! I went with the XLT FX4 Lux package. I really wanted to keep the truck as close to $30.000 as I could...I personally really like the XLT interior and I don't feel like the orange trim is over the top. I feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck with this model.

All depends on what you want. I went full on Lariat lux f4 4K tow and hard tonneau. It’s a great little truck regardless of trim. Hits a sweet spot for a lot of folks👍

Maybe one thing to get for your XLT is the engine cover to dampen the noise... I still believe the XLT Luxury package is the best way to go... I love the Hot pepper red... but should Not be an extra charge.. it is rediculass to charge extra for what color you want!!!!

I ordered the Maverick Lariat Hybrid Luxury and CoPilot 360 in The Area 51 color back on July 9th. I should be getting it delivered after April 22nd to my dealer. 9 months of waiting and can’t wait. I own a 1995 Black Ford Ranger splash edition and that’s what I’m driving now. I do love the Hot Pepper Red but can’t see paying even more money for that color. As it is my truck will be $32,000. Love your content.

I loved saving around $3,200 by going with a fully loaded XLT Lux truck! It would have been only an extra $70 per month probably, but I still couldn't justify going from $33,025 to $36,975. Even though the little thing I would have especially liked was the push-button start feature and opening the doors without the key/phone just staying in my pocket haha.

This was awesome, I had no idea.... One suggestion would be to do a part2 version that had pricing and the XL version and any other versions..... It seems there are 3 choices, the basic XL for entry level (bang for the buck, the XLT with LUX (happy medium and the fully loaded Lariat if you have the means.

I agree. This seems to be the only thing I actually would care about in the upgrade from XLT to Lariat. Head lights and Tail light are much better looking for the Lariat.

Another difference I see is that if you want the adaptive cruise, you have to go with the Lariat Lux package as well. I love adaptive cruise and all the rest of the tech. I'm going to order a '23 hybrid Lariat w/Lux package as soon as the orders open up. Thanks for the comparison!!

Spot on! The co pilot 360 on the lariat is more in depth! Important to note however is that you can get that package on its own. You don’t NEED the Lux for it! Good luck either way!

I finally heard from my dealer the other day telling me they had a Maverick so I could see one in person. I ordered a hybrid Lariat lux package with a moon roof at the end of June. I went down checked it out, told them if it had not been scheduled I wanted to change color to Area 51. They called yesterday said no color change, I've been scheduled. Truck should be here mid Jan. while I hopefully will be in Jamaica.

I really like the lighting on the Lariat, that might have been one reason to get it, but I don't care for the interior color. The rest of the stuff on it like the keyless entry and push button start didn't really matter to me. I went with the XLT with the Lux Package because you get a lot of the stuff I wanted, Spray-in Bedliner, the Hitch, the Outlets in the bed and cab, the heated seats, mirrors and steering wheel are things that are a nice addition. What drove me to the XLT was the interior, Orange is my favorite color and I really like the way they put the orange in various places in the XLT. I have an XLT Hybrid with the Lux Package, Co-Pilot 360 and the Floor Liners in the Hot Pepper Red, really like that color, hopefully coming mid January, build week of 12/20/21.

You know Jeff, my reasons are very similar. While I adore the lighting on the Lariat, I know the aftermarket will have a solution that will bridge that gap. So for me? The interior of the XLT + the features you get for the money, made it the one for me.

Agreed. XLT with lux is a WAY better value than base Lariat, and it isn't even close.

Great review! Ford made the XLT with the luxury package such a great value that it makes it hard to justify the lariat. Separately, would love to see your review of the hybrid (in any trim) if you are able to get your hands on one.

If I want the things you mentioned, and I do, I will spring for the Lariat lux package. I think more of those things should have been included on the Lariat like on my Lariat F-150 but I like my creature comforts and the difference in price is worth it to me.

Great video comparison! I did not care for the Lariat leatherette colors at all, or the bronze plastic trim. I wish we could've personalized options more. I'd take the XLT interior & grill, & Lariat front and rear light systems - and would've paid a Lariat price for it. I am extremely happy with my XLT Hybrid (Alto blue) purchase which has shipped & should be at the dealership the week of Dec. 19-25! Thank you again for the videos, I hope you're able to do some detailed Hybrid videos. Peace...

Can't stand the Lariat interior and wheels and had no interest in additional tech on this budget vehicle. Wanted an XL but the cruise control and hassle of painting steelies made me get the XLT hybrid (as Ford intended). There will be plenty of mod options too. About 25k OTD with a 4% discount

Both look great; I’d be happy with a XLT w/ Lux Pkg or a Lariat. The power sliding rear window & upgraded stereo are nice features. Other than that; heated seats are the only must have.

I opted to order a velocity blue XLT with the 4k tow package, spray in bed liner and all weather floor liners, couldn’t really justify the fx4 package or the lux package as they either included features that I personally would rarely ever use or I could just make a diy version myself especially when it comes to the bed…. Thought about the lux package for the bed lighting but then remembered you can setup your own bed lighting with the standard 12v outlets in the bed and with the seats being cloth in the xlt i didn’t see much need for heated seats since cloth doesn’t really get super chilly like a leather seat would in the cold

I could not justify ordering the Lariat. I ordered a fully optioned out XLT with lux package the FX4 and 4k. Only thing I am missing out on that interested me is the Push Button, Signature lighting, and adaptive cruise. Leather seats never did anything for me. That being said my 2016 GTI has none of that so I cannot miss what I never had. That being said I would love to know how you love that Secret Labs chair

Was a tough one for me. I think if I was to order again, I would go Lariat Hybrid, but in Ecoboost AWD form...for the money you cannot go wrong with the XLT + Lux! The Secret labs chair is 6/10. While it has the ability to support my weight, which most chairs in this class dont, the flat pad causes a numb ass after 2-3 hours of working from home. I had to buy a purple chair pad, which when you're spending this money on an office chair seems like a miss. If I was to do it again, I would go to Facebook marketplace and find an office liquidator and get a Herman Miller Aeron!

Ended up with no choice but XLT Lux because Ford didn’t offer the Lariat with the hybrid engine in Canada. Seeing it now I’m glad, not a fan of Lariat interior, and not a fan of leather/vinyl seats.

@@MoneyShift Likely because AWD highly out sells FWD in Canada, and some brands don’t even sell FWD versions of their vehicles here. I suspect that ratio of EcoBoost over Hybrid sales is also much larger here than the US. I think I saw numbers around 40% hybrid in the US, I’d guess it’s lower here, maybe 35%?

I prefer the look of the XLT interior, but I like the front and back light assemblies of the Lariot. I wonder if the wiring harnesses are the same, or if the Lariot has extra wires. If the wiring harnesses are the same, could one put the Lariat light assemblies on the XLT?

2 things i'm hoping you could hit on between the XLT and the Lariat. 1. are the wiring harness' the same (Like:upgrade to DRL or Subwoofer) 2. no one has shown the 4 way headrest of the Lariat, how does that work? I ordered the Hybrid XLT Lux in Cactus Grey, I think it will look clean even when dirty, your thoughts? Go. great job as always. @;-)

i hope in the further iterations of this car they include AWD on the hybrid as well as stop n go adaptive cruise control on the ford co pilot. No idea why it doesnt have that standard

Absolutely crazy that the base Lariat omits so many things that should be standard in the top trim. The fact that you have to get the Lariat Luxury package to get heated mirrors, seats and steering wheel is a crime.

I don't like Push button start and keyless entry.. I like keyless & remote start as long as I have a real key, with a normal key hole on the door [not a hidden one] and to put the key in the switch before you can drive.

So the Lariat is $800 ( roughly) more. Comes down to interior texture and design, keyless entry and start button, LED’s, Dual Climate, Power Rear Window, Slight grill change vs 400w rear seat outlet, heated seats and wheel, and a bed liner. For me never having LED’s, Heated Seats and Wheel, Keyless Entry and Push Start, Dual Climate Control, a Power Outlet in the rear seat I have to ask myself do I need any of these since I’ve made it thus far without them? By far the most functional of all those are the heated seats and Wheel but in reality only come into play for 4-5 months of the year. Do I want a Lariat Lux Package? Oh heck yes! Can I live with an XLT Lux package? Of course. I need to see these options in person to help me along in my choice. I see that both of you did not order the Co-Pilot 360.

I had the exact same dilemma and came to the exact same conclusion. The XLT does have the Co-Pilot360 package, but because adaptive cruise is not offered you do not see it on the outside. The grille radar piece is not needed

The only thing that stopped me from ordering one was no push to start on xlt. I’m used to just getting in and going I can’t justify paying a premium for just that and then losing heated seats and getting a hideous brown interior no thanks

I would suggest not to over spend this much on this small lil truck. If you have money to spend, go for f150 instead. Or f150 hybrid of you looking for better mileage. Maverick is cheap for a reason.

OneNote the XLT luxury package does not have a spray in bedliner. It has a drop in bedliner now.

You can override this at the dealership, they have another option code for the Spray in Bedliner option. I was told this adds a 12-14 week delay to orders currently! Best bet would be to see if your dealer can do the spray in bedliner on location. Mine offered that to me for no additional cost but I am sticking with the hard liner for now!

No matter the Trim level, if you don’t get the luxury package you being ripped off. Just pay the extra 2-3K the spray in bead liner alone is worth the cost of the headed steaks and steering wheel.

The XLT seems like a no brainer compared to the Lariat sure the lariat might look better to some people for me they look almost exactly the same just the Lariat has the exclusive color (for an extra $400) and looking at fords website a XLT just with luxury is $26,355 while the base Lariat is $27,355

Thank you for your informative video. At the Ford website they show a $645 "ACQUISITION FEE" I believe this is for paperwork needed to lease the vehicle. My question is if you are paying cash this fee is deducted or do they still jam it to you? Thanks

I just placed my order at the dealership and when they gave me the final order it was $300 cheaper. The acquisition fee was removed, the salesman said it was a fee that put up but it can change, I wasn't able to get a clear answer but I would haggle with them if they try adding it 😉
