I’ve had my Maverick for a little over 3 months. It’s a AWD XLT ecobeast. I’m about to roll over 10k miles. I live in Midwest and it’s done everything I bought it for. It handles pretty decent in inclement weather. The continental tires are good highway tires but are subpar in snow etc. I work for the railroad and I travel a 100 miles a day and use it to haul odds and ends stuff. I have a family of 4 that easily fits in it if needed. No you’re not gonna haul 10k lbs or tow a house with it but just for running around and hauling smaller stuff it’s perfect and with today’s fuel prices it was a win. In my opinion, these are more like the old Rangers. So if you liked the older rangers, you’d probably like these.

I test drove one of these Maverick XLT, just yesterday morning. I must say that I was impressed with the look, interior layout, dash, materials, bed accessories. Very little leg room, while sitting in the back seat, would be my biggest complaint. The one I drove was a FWD, 4 cylinder only vehicle. It was not the hybrid model. I did put name on the dealer's to-call list, once a person can order their own vehicle again.

Good review! I've had my Maverick XLT for about 6 months now. At ~8K miles, I've been thoroughly impressed! It's smooth to ride, has plenty of giddy-up, particularly if you're rolling along and punch it. Gas mileage hovers at 30. When I do a full run at the 55-65 MPH steady state drive, I'll get as high as 34 with the 2 liter turbo engine. My only complaint is that it should sit higher. Not much, but another two inches and remove the skirting on the nose and it would be much more ranch road friendly.

I have essentially this same truck, except I got mine with the tow package. Comes with the hitch, and a built in brake controller. The primary reason to opt for the AWD , in my opinion, is if you are going to want to be able to tow 4,000 lbs. Or take it off road at all. The bed is short, but the tailgate has a second set of pins you can latch it to that enables it to carry 4 x 8 sheet goods like plywood or drywall. The XLT version also has a 110 power outlet inside the cab and another in the bed. I hate the fact that it does the shut off thing at a light- but there is a button near the shift knob that you press when you start up and it turns that annoying feature off. And if you set the drive program to Speed, it delays shifting in the 8 speed gearbox in a way that really makes the truck quite quick ( closer to 280 hp btw) If you set it to ECO mode, then the truck is really pretty slow in acceleration, but that’s how you get the 24 mpg its capable of. The Interior appointments are really quite nice on the XLT, two kinds of charge ports, hand free cell phone service and streaming music, and I got a rear sliding window as an option when I ordered the truck. Another great feature is interior storage. The entire rear seat lifts up and has ample storage underneath for tie down straps, road flares, first aid kit, bungies , jumper cables and more. And I can attest that 5 full grown adults can sit comfortably in the truck. All in all, I am very happy with the Maverick. The only things I would change is the ability to set the auto shutoff system to be OFF as a default, and the Shift knob to have full stops at drive and park so you don’t always have to LOOK to see you are in the right spot. Even with the AWD, tow package and XLT trim package, my truck still came in under 32K.

I love this little truck! It's just the kind of truck that I'd need, using it for Kayak trailers, single axle utility trailers, etc. most of them are rated around 3,000-3,500 lbs anyways that's all I would need to haul realistically. It's a great truck around town being small & nimble enough to maneuver easily, along for the price point it's being offered at there's nothing else that can beat it imo. Especially for when 90%-95% of the time you're really using it as a daily driver hauling & towing stuff occasionally, you don't need a giant truck to do all of that with either.
@langhamp8912

I've got this truck. It's a tiny truck and shockingly narrow. Like KIA Forte narrow but about 2 feet longer. It's not a tall vehicle either; you sit higher than a car, yes, but not by much. Yet it has a 6 foot bed, tows at least 4000 pounds, is shockingly quick, parks easily, great airconditioning and just an all-around comfortable and useful vehicle. It's almost a truck for people who intensely dislike trucks. If you made a truck that was furthest from a truck that could still do truck things, then this 32 to 38 mpg truck is it.

Actually, much better that the other Fords that we've owned that were built in the US. The 2.0 turbo has shown to be a pretty solid engine as well; I've had two of them go over 150k miles without any issues other than they both needed a purge valve to be replaced at around 80k miles. Surprised by Scotty saying this as well. If you only have 2 snow tires they should actually go on the back of the fwd car as per example of what happened to OP here when you put them in the front

@@gs98999A few things about the many people not liking the two snow tire idea. First many people don't do any snow tires especially in the milder winter climates. It's an expensive thing to have a full set of extra rims and tires and have someone swap them out twice a year for you. And people don't know just how much more useful those tires are. All season tires are trash in the winter in my opinion. But I didn't have any experience with snow tires until I went to the used tire dealer and they had nothing else available. I was amazed how impossible it was to get stuck in my front wheel drive vehicle with snow tires. Even if I knew my budget really didn't allow for them before. After that, and since I mostly drive in town delivering stuff, I opted to buy snow tires just for the drive wheels on future vehicles. Yes the rear end can slide, but that can be controlled by driving technique. Also I value being able to actually move forward and being able to control where I go rather than the occasional sliding of a foot by my rear tires. I really don't understand the idea of putting a pair of snow tires in the back if you only have two for a front wheel vehicle. Now I've lost all of my ability to control my steering and forward motion so that my rear tires don't skid sideways once in a while?

My 2018 Mazda three GT manual transmission gave me 45,000 trouble 3 miles with zero quality issues. It was my 34th car and one of the best that I have ever owned. It was made in Mexico. Pretty dang amazing if you ask me.

Great Job on reviewing newer cars lately, Most reviewers don't mention at all how a vehicle may hold up, just the numbers they are provided by the manufacturer. You provide valuable information from a Mechanic's point of view and its great. Keep it up please with many more models.

Auto stop has been used in hybrids for many years. I had an 03 Civic Hybrid with over 300k. and the engine ran perfectly. Just needed a $4k battery LOL. Thanks Scott!

Enjoyed the review. Had a 76 Ford Maverick as my first car. Total eyesore. No one wanted to ride with me. 😂 I’d consider buying one of these used in a few years after we see how they hold up.

Strangely enough, I would get the hybrid. The engine is port injected, has no turbo, and the electric part has two motors and acts like a CVT, essentially making it a giant prius. Good to know electric powertrains are becoming cheaper...

When Ford first started selling Hybrid Escapes, years ago, they paid patent licensing fees to Toyota. They didn't try to hide this. Toyota either griped enough or outright sued them to make them stop telling people this. It contained no actual Toyota parts, even though they were sort of implying that. It was just that something (transmission and electric motors?) were a "licensed knock-off". So, yeah, it kind of *is* a giant Prius. :-) Oh and don't worry, folks. Atkinson cycle is nothing special. It's just variable valve timing with a very late intake valve opening. The 02-09 Priuses used that, as did the Mazda Millenia, and it didn't do anything you wouldn't already know how to fix.

Exactly. In fact the hybrid has no transmission. Just a fixed set of planetary gears. Impossible to wear out.

Sorry for being too lazy to do my own research, but can someone tell me what makes the cvt trans a plus? My father's jeep patriot had a cvt transmission and it was absolutely horrible. I'm not saying the mavericks is, just was hoping someone could explain why it wasn't?

@@RyanNash20 The idea with a CVT is to have the computer run the engine at the "optimum" rpm for whatever load is presented to it. Steady cruising at 35? 1400 rpm. 45? 1400 rpm. 90? 1400 rpm. Stomp it to merge onto the interstate? 5500 rpm all the way from 5 to 90 mph.

@@erikscott5709 Makes sense, I just see cvt transmissions being talked down on very often, and my own personal experience from my father's patriot was that they give out really easily. I was wondering what makes this one different I guess, not so much how a cvt is supposed to work.

Scotty your wisdom is un deniable! But for the first time I can rember I take exception with with when you said "You can put winter tires on just the front wheels for front wheel drive" having grown up in Canada my dad taught me to never ever do that. If you only have 2 winter tires they always must go on the back. The rational is the winter tires will grip much better when stopping the winter tires on the front will grab but your less grippy rear end will start to go sideways. When it comes to winter driving proper traction while braking trumps all.
