2022 Formula 1 Compared to Other Race Cars

There are many racing disciplines out there - light and grippy formula cars, Le Man prototypes, GT cars, stock cars and superbikes. Each discipline goes about racing in very different ways, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
But - which is quicker?
Well, I have compared them all using a series of tests to figure this out and the answers may surprise you.
-
Now we did this a couple of years ago, but since then Formula 1 and NASCAR have had enormous rule changes, affecting how they all stack up against the pack, so we have ripped up the form book and started again.
The tests being used are 0-60mph, top speed and lap time around a track.
Quick disclaimer, since not all of these cars have raced the same tracks, or done speed runs in the same conditions - there is no way to be 100% accurate with this. (Well, unless someone wants to lend us one of each)
But we can compare lap times at several different tracks to give it the best go possible.

Motogp is wild, how quick they go on straights and it's basically a dude hugging a bike. And when they turn they're just about touching the ground, usually less than 1 meter away from another rider's wheels. Crazy stuff.

They have airbags built into their abrasion-fire-proof full body leather which also doubled as a HANS device by limiting the helmet movement when triggered. And their run off area are much more generous to allow the rider to slide and separate from his bike. Sure you might get a bruise from a high-side but even breaking a bone is a very rare occasion. The only real risk of death is getting hit by another bike which unfortunately can’t be solved, only minimized by adjusting track layout.

One of the key features about formula e is that it races on street circuits. There has to be something significant about the series other than the fact it's electric that is unique. @@formularguments7335 I thought initially the choice of street circuits was because the gen 1 cars couldn't drive that long to be able to do a long enough entertaining race. I get that they won't change it up any time soon but wouldn't it be awesome to see them zoom around Spa, actually hitting top speeds for longer, using attack mode, trying not to run out of battery with those elevation changes. gt3 and Indycar top speed is far off. GT3s easily hit 270+ kph and maybe even near 300kph at a track like le mans. 370 kph as indycar’s top speed is also completely wrong. Scott Dixon set the fastest pole lap this year with 376 kph. Which is an average! Cars were hitting 390 kph and could go quicker if it didn’t have to turn to complete a lap around indy. The videos are usually great, but this one just seems lazy. F1 also doesn’t reach 360 kph without a slipstream, Monza qualifying today showed that they got just under 350 kph. @@chadofchads7222 …you do know that horsepower does not equal top speed, right? Horsepower is for acceleration with some top speed, which is useful, but the top speed is just incidental. Aero matters more for top speed, which the Indycar would be better at since they have an entire package around that. If you wanted an F1 car to concentrate more on top speed, you would start by making an Indycar and modify it from there, but you wouldn’t be allowed to do that since F1 only does some specific major aero packages for some tracks (like the Italian GP for Ferrari). It's intended that way to level the playing field for smaller manufacturers that don't have the ressources to develop Hybrid systems. It makes it Attractive for People like Glickenhaus to still come with a non hybrid car.

I would like to see a test conducted between different types of car styles where you would test the fastest cornering ability. You would create a 1 mile straight away and then at the end of the straightaway you would have the cars do a U-turn to have them cross a pendicular finish line. You would record the fastest 180 degree turn and the fastest exiting speed. You would compare the speeds to a range of radius. The cars could make a sharp turn or a really wide turn, The drivers could choose how slow or how fast they went down the straight away. The drivers would choose the radius. You would look for which is faster leaning, drifting, or high grip.

a LONG straight to hairpin to a highspeed corner (flat) to a short straight and then a 90 degree turn to another short straight (to test exit speed) would be ideal. Alternating turning directions for tire reasons and possibly adding in a banked corner would probably be best though.

The topspeed comparisons with Indycars I always find so weird. The indycars driving at say the Indy 500 are very different from the indycars driving at the normal tracks or street circuits. This meaning totallt different bodywork, steering, gearing etc. If you want to do a more realistic comparison you would be better off judging them as two different vehicles all together.
@trevg7253
@trevg7253 Жыл бұрын
They do not change the body work at all. It’s the same they adjust it just like f1 does for different tracks. Ofc steering and gearing ratios change like all motorsports do with different tracks. Not so weird after all
@DavidGossettMusic
@DavidGossettMusic Жыл бұрын
@@trevg7253 There are 3 different aero packages in IndyCar. Road, Short Oval, and Oval/Speedway. The short oval spec essentially removes the top element of the front and rear wings, and the oval spec/speedway runs the fully trimmed aero spec with a downgrade in turbo boost. IndyCars could run much faster in super speedway spec, but don't for safety reasons. Back in the CART days before the Handford device came in cars were occassionally hitting 250mph/400kph. While IndyCar currently has a less sophisticated aero package in road course spec, the pre-"Universal Aero Kit" era had front wings that rivaled F1 in complexity. (Look up the 2015 Honda IndyCar aero spec, it's insane how much it changed.) The spec aero they run now was for the same reason as F1's aero redesign, to improve the competitiveness of the series.

Some points to be mentioned: BoP series like WEC or GT3 series never let the cars race at full potential. Toyotas hypercar f.e. is only allowed to boost its hybrid power at 190 kph, therefore could be much faster if allowed to boost straight on. Todays LMP2 are also nerved extremly due to now slower Hypercars. Also GT3 cars top speed is completly a BoP thing. At Daytona they were as fast as GTEs on the straights. Btw: Were would be GT1 cars or LMP1 be?

Cool video, but - and I don't know if you can get that data - comparing cornering speeds of the different series would be really interesting. Take something like Eau rouge, and some hairpin. Then compare the average, lowest and/or highest speeds in those corners. I'm guessing F1 would take all the slow and medium corners, as well as most high speed corners, but who knows. It would be amazing if you could do a video on that. Cheers!

And also i dont see that Formula E car performing that good. Ofc, the tighter and slower the circuit the better it gets, but on an "average" circuit no way it can keep up with LMP cars. The video is great on comparisons, but when Porsche decided to throw half of the technical regulations the LMP1 hybrid class had in it's prime just so they could somewhat unhinge the 919 around nurburgring, they won any sort of battle like this in my heart. The moment those guys managed to drive around nurburgring, record it and have the recording look like it was sped up despite being the real deal around the green hell, what's left for everyone else? I haven't been impressed by any racing series since then except for WRC, and that's because WRC has actual lunatics behind the wheels of those ridiculous toy cars.
