In the summer of 2022, Go For Broke National Education Center (GFBNEC) piloted the Go For Broke Journalism Institute which brought together high school students to learn about the Japanese American WWII soldiers’ story, and also provide first-rate journalistic instruction. The result was a partnership with the Asian American Journalists Association, LA Chapter (AAJA-LA) and LAUSD’s Downtown Business Magnets Schools that worked with eight journalism students over a six-week,10 session period. The sessions were led by journalists from the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and by ABC7 News Anchor David Ono, who provided first hand experience of journalism skills, research and writing strategies.
The curriculum centered on the Japanese American WWII soldiers’ experience and each of the students developed an appreciation and a personal connection to the story as highlighted in this video. Visit goforbroke.org to learn more about GFBNEC's educational resources available online.
