This is a great honest comparison! I recently went from a semi built 13 trail to a 15 GX because of rust issues. I plan on putting a good amount of money into the GX so I can make those weekend trips but you're right, mostly on road. The GX surprised me, I checked every box that the 4runner left empty! Thank you for putting this out there.

This was a great comparison video. One suggestion is that if you are highlighting tiresize, you should also highlight departure angles. The 4Runner has a better departure than the GX so even though a smaller 4R has smaller tires, the clearance is better. But of course anything is possible with BMCs

I agree on stock the approach and departure angles are much better on the 4R. Once you add a rear bumper.... they should be identical (they are on both my rigs as I have the same rear bumper). My approach is still better on the 4R as I cut the wings.

Sandy Cats - Great series of videos and I appreciate your detailed response to my previous comment. It'd be great to see you build a late model 2nd Gen Sequoia to go with the GX and 4Runner that you have. The 5.7L, incredible cargo room, and bulletproof running gear make it an awesome overlanding platform. It takes the GX powertrain one step further by giving you 2WD as well. Unfortunately you lose the solid axle in the rear. Anyway, just an idea. The only channel I've seen modding the 2nd Gen Sequoia is Tandem Offroad.

you don't need a front and rear lockers. ATRAC is a brake locking differential on both axles... watch our Cleghorn Ridge video 😃... great comparison video
@SandyCats
@SandyCats Жыл бұрын
It really depends on terrain. For example… I never run lockers on Hells Revenge in Moab (or most Moab trails). Don’t think I’ve ever turned on lockers in Cleghorn. Never used a locker on all the alpine trails in CO. But something like John Bull will require lockers, otherwise you’ll start breaking parts. Also been on overlanding trips in Baja where I would have turned around and lost 2 days without lockers (no trees to winch off). ATRAC is great to a point. A rear locker is essential security if your doing harder stuff IMO. Will watch vid…. And will def watch the lifetime transmission fluid vid now🤘🏻

As you know, the steering response difference on-road between your two vehicles is 100% due to the GX460 having KDSS and your particular 4R TRD OR not having it. Tough to have your cake and eat it too :) I personally would never get a 4R without KDSS unless I wanted to build it just for difficult/extreme off-roading. I spent a long time in Southern Africa where we had beautiful smooth blacktop highways and then washboard gravel tertiary roads. We drove LC Prados and Nissan Patrols, as well as HiLux and the best "mod" you can get for higher speed washboard dirt/gravel roads is a tire gauge and compressor so that you can air down from 32-34 psi to 22-24 psi when on gravel, and then air back up when back on asphalt. If you want a long-lasting overland rig, none of these high performance remote-reservoir systems are the answer, unless you live in North America and think that spending $4000 on shocks/struts that have to be rebuilt every couple of years is reasonable. If you're looking for a great V8 powered overland / off-road rig, then in North America the best you can get now (after the LC200 and 2nd gen Sequoia where discontinued) is the Nissan Armada. It's still built in Japan and is a Nissan Patrol (2016+ versions). If I was in the market for a V8 powered overland vehicle for great on-road capabilities, tonnes of space, and awesome for moderate technical off-roading, I'd only consider the Armada or 2nd gen Sequoia. If I wanted something smaller, with the ability to modified for difficult/extreme off-roading, I'd go 4R TRD OR.

I can appreciate a lot of what your saying. The GX steering is tuned differently (more Like a Prado). There is a video here that can explain it wayyy better: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6uvd3iNqJlmjZI Regarding the adj coilovers I would say that it really depends on your speed, weight and needs. For me… it took me over 6 months to tune the 4R suspension. I finally have it driving perfect… but once loaded… there is a difference so adjusters help. When I want to go very fast (minor jumps inevitable)…. I can make them harder…. If I’m “crawling” … softer. I am probably unique though as I only have limited days and want to do a lot. Often we are doing 500-800 off-road only miles in 5-6 days with time to camp each night with a 4 and a 2 year old. Sometimes this also requires us to go through “moderate” or “hard” crawling trails as there is no easier way around them. So we end up going faster than most, abusing our vehicle more than most, and therefore feel like we require some of these things. BTW… I rebuild every 2000 off-road miles so every 4-5 months or so. I agree… not practical for a lot of people but the ability to go faster off-road in comfort gives us the ability to see more in less time so it’s worth it for us. For perspective… even on steel skids we usually go through them every 2 years not because we like crawling (we often don’t on overlanding trips) but because we are forced into going through harder trails to get to our desired destinations/routes. As for KDSS…. I can agree now that the DR.KDSS switch exists to allow you to turn it off. Before that switch I was really anti-KDSS for myself as it hurts your ride substantially when at speeds on desert roads. But again… this is only if your going faster than most. A lot of my videos are posted from this type of overlanding perspective and I am often heard recommending cheaper options as most don’t need what I need.

There isn’t more than a 200 lbs difference in the payload capacity of a GX vs a t4r, 1700/1500 lbs. where did you get 880 lbs for the t4r? Secondly, the t4r goes to a center lock as soon as you engage 4WD, since it doesn’t have have a center diff that the GX has. The side opening door on the GX opens for curbs that are on the left, where you drive on the left of the road. Here in the US, it’s a hindrance. The FJ designed stateside has the proper door swing.

I bought a GX, as a daily driver and hated it lol.. My base of comparison was coming from my ex boyfriend's Range Rover, so I quickly traded it for a Range Rover, and sooo happy I did! The GX has terrible sluggish handling and sluggish acceleration for a "luxury" V8 mid-sized SUV. Like it is a class bigger. The tech is ancient too.. No good for a "luxury" daily driver SUV imo. Not with other companies luxury feeling light years ahead My overland/off road use rig is a 2019 4Runner TRD Off Road, that I ABSOLUTELY love! It has the Magnuson supercharger, so is quicker than the GX ever was lol, and has Fox 2.5 DSCs, plus other mods, so handles amazing. Given what the 4Runner is, it performed exactly as I expected. It just needed more power, and Magnuson provided that! The 4Runner is the better off roader, right off the lot, and definitely when modded. KDSS works as an auto disconnecting sway bar that excels at rock crawling, by increasing articulation, but only when needed. 4Runner aftermarket is full of great KDSS friendly parts. Like A LOT!

For me, it's about the reliability. Range Rovers/Land Rovers are consistently at the top of the list for the most problematic vehicles out there with more time spent at the mechanic then virtually anything else on the market.

Great comparison. But you will need to reevaluate your MPG on the 4Runner. You will not get 14-15MPG with the setup you got. 34” tires, lo pro winch bumper w/ winch, sliders so forth. Unless you are driving 30-40 miles per hour everywhere you go. Many 4Runner owners (including myself) will try every possible way to cut down on their gas mileage and some even willdeny the fact that they lost so much MPG when rigging up their trucks with bigger tires. 33” plus.. Your MPG is going down the drain. PERIOD.
@SandyCats
@SandyCats Жыл бұрын
There are tooo many variables to give exact estimates honestly. From tire size (some 34s are actually 33”), weight, re gearing, but primarily driving style. On highway driving at 75 mph with my weight, true 34s, open roads, regeared to 4.88, and not putting pedal to floor…. I get 14-15. On my other 4Runner when I had 35s, regeared, and supercharger I was getting closer to 11-12. I also let off on highway hills and climb to speed back slower. That other 4runner is about 500 pounds heavier (unloaded) and I would drive it more aggressively due to supercharger. This is interstate driving… not mixed as these rigs mostly only do longer trips. Also… I know it sounds crazy… but for me this 4R is a light build. I put what was minimum needed for our style of wheeling and it doesn’t carry any extra weight except sleeping gear and passengers. Tools, fridge, kitchen, and so on all go in the other (overbuilt) 4Runner.

@@TeCKis300 Of course the software is updated but the mechanical components are almost 100% same. 10.2-1 compression ratio. Like you said its the same engine and the ECU would always adjust if there is any knocking. The Gx460 engine has been in many Toyota/Lexus vehicles since 2009-2010. 💯 … they came down on both 4Runners after regear. However it wasn’t substantial… it helped by about 10 degrees or so. On my 19 4R the first thing I did was regear… and I was still hitting 250 off-road…then I added 3 tranny coolers and aluminum radiator. On the GX I wanted to see if I can avoid it for a while just to experiment with other avenues first. What I’m really learning with Toyotas (I come from Jeep world) is that there is no secret recipe but rather a bunch of small steps that eventually get you there based on your specific vehicle.

I would say it is undoubeatable that the GX is the better machine overall between the two... the things I miss most about the 4runner... rear window roll down & better economy car with no premium & more MPG probably making it the more practical car between the two.. but the driving experience is apples and oranges and Lexus just feels supreme.
