I have to say Juan is absolutely correct about how the thrashin bars and risers change how light and nimble the RG is. I bought a 21 RG special in January 21 from Top Rocker HD. Had them put the 6.5” pullback risers and the high bend bars, this was incredible. Did a 4500 mile road trip to sturgis and more in 9 days. This set up was the most comfortable and also the ability to ride aggressive is amazing. Great job Thrashin on this set up. 🤘

I appreciate your commentaries. I own an Iron 883 3 gal peanut tank and long trips suck because of that. You gave me some food for thoughts on which bike to get next. I am interested in both bikes and one factor that weight heavy for me is the ability to split lanes. I live in the Bay Area and traffic sucks bad here!!! It is easier to split lanes with a sportster or any soft tail than a Road Glide or Street.

I was torn between these two bikes. Got to ride both at a demo day. Went with a Road Glide Special. I was surprised how light and nimble it felt while being so much heavier. Until you change out those "Wheel Barrel" handlebars on a stock RG, they will NEVER feel anything different than a grandpa bike. You need to ride one that already has been modified to get a realistic feel for how an RG truly rides. The LRST comes from the factory already setup way more aggressive than most stock harleys....the bars are usually the first thing EVERYONE should change on a touring harley, as the stock ones are simply horrible. THe position is down on your lap in front of you on all of them....minute you change that the whole bike changes entirely.

I have a 21 street glide and a 23 LRST. Stock for stock the SG feels like a tank. LR is far more nimble and flickable. Suspension is also much much better on the LR. I do agree though, the clamshell bags suck if you have much to pack. Mine are always scrached up too just from the way you have to close them. I figured it was because of my rough hands, but it seems others have the same problem.

At the end of the day, if you plan on doing anything more than a 2 or 3 hour ride with a group, the RG is the logical choice. The LR is a street shredder with the ability to tackle a 1-2 hour excursion if need be. By a longshot, most guys who have the bigger bike will never be in a spot where they really, really wish they had the smaller bike. However, most guys with a smaller bike, inevitably end up in a situation where they go, man I really wish I had a bigger bike. If you’re only gonna have one bike going with the glide is the way.

Great comparison. As a potential Harley customer I don't understand why they don't put the 117 in the base RG and sell it for a reasonable price. To me running a couple different production lines for different engine sizes doesn't make any sense. I think Harley is missing the boat. Yes, they have a great bike and have a very loyal Fanbase. But Harley shouldn't screw current loyal owners and potential new customers with their marketing schemes.

One's a Bagger, the other is a Clamsheller. The Low Rider ST didn't work for me with it's mid foot pegs, so I went with a used forward mount Sport Glide, which is a Clamsheller, too. The comparison started off wrong with pricing because it does not factor in that the Low Rider ST comes equipped with ABS standard plus its freight and surcharge combined are $400 less than the Road Glide. I chose the Low Rider ST for many reasons, first was the wind protection stock was better, the suspension was so much better it wasn't fair, and then I saved all that weight. Handling was crisper and just as stable. Losing the radio? No problem, the radio on the Road Glide was useless at highway speeds. As for the five gallon tank, that is still more than three hours at highway speeds and I must be getting old because I don't mind taking a break on that interval. Realistically they both are nearly equal in range when you run it out, there might be a twenty mile difference to empty. Oddly my Low Rider has been doing more than fifty miles per gallon which caught me off guard. Both are fun bikes but face it, the tour line has been without serious update for six years and only now is getting an update in 2024. Harley pushed aside all updates on them to focus on Revolution Max bikes. Final note, when it came to making both bikes ready for the long haul I had to automatically price in a new rear suspension on the Glide. No choice, they ride horribly compared to the Softails.
@redrider01512 жыл бұрын
Out of the box....if you are cruising and a laid back, not a very aggressive rider the RoadGlide is the way to go....but if you are an aggressive rider, wanting to always hit it, aggressive in the turns the LRS is absolutely the way to go. You can make the RG super aggressive but it costs a LOT MORE to make a RG a performance type canyon bike than it does to make the LRS a comfy touring bike IMHO... (considering I have dumped probably 15 grand into an RGS making it more like what I want) If the LRS had top opening bags it wouldnt even be a question which one I would want. Even getting the RG where its comfortable you are looking at significant cost increase when you are adding bars, windshield, stage 1, compared to the LRS, where you can keep the stock bars if you needed and it has less that I would say need to be immediately changed right out of hte box.

I have a Street Glide with the 107 and the SE447 torque cam and I don’t have any problems passing people. I don’t need to downshift, just twist the throttle and it also makes normal street riding pretty fun as that torque is right there available. I also have a better air intake and mufflers but that’s it, nothing special and it’s more than enough for me.

If you want the lightest touring bike get the street glide. It’s 20-30 pounds lighter. You can feel it when picking it up off the kickstand. No matter what bike you get, you get use to the weight very quickly. I’ve ridden both the road glide and street glide, I prefer the street glide. There is a bike out there for everyone!

Interesting perspective on the Road Glide. My personal Opinion: 04-up sportster, early model Dyna, new softails all feel similar weight to each other. Now, on paper the new softail is quite a bit heavier then the first two I just mentioned, but the weight balance is just so damn good it feels lighter and more nimble then I ever expected. The Sporty and Dyna get a bit top heavy and twitchy at low speeds especially with jacked up suspensions. New model dyna feels heavy, especially the jacked up ones like the Low rider S. I'd almost say that it's closer to the RG feel wise. Regardless of that I'd say any touring bike I've ridden feels noticeably heavier to me. Especially in tight twisties, it takes a lot to go from full lean in one direction to the other. That scenario specifically is where the Sportster is king, overall handling I'd give to the Low rider S/ST personally.

I love the low rider st, I have the 2019 standard low rider and have no issues on long trips, I would buy the new st, but still waiting for harley to make a chrome version, and i agree 100% the clam shell bags suck!!, I have a BMW and for some reason BMWs are that way too, they suck, hopefully harley makes some improvements, chrome version and copy the bagger style bags.

Also side note, Juan, what did you use for cable management around your control wires, from your risers to inside the fairing?
