I’m a pretty small person so it feels better to me than Yamaha but not totally sure about the newer ones since I’ve only ridden a 03 yz250f. Just gonna stick with Honda for now though

The reverse head on the Yamaha brings the intake noise in front of you and it is easy to hear that engine breathing and making power!

@@mxengineer1 yup.. the air box is where the fuel tank normally is. Since reversing the head in 2010 I think it was the induction noise as the bike is coming towards you is a beautiful sound especially on the factory bikes.. I love that induction noise they make.

For the same reasons why you like the honda better, coming off a honda i feel so much better on a yamaha. My problem with the honda was i would try to turn it too hard and end up turning too much. On my weed wacker, to me i like the heavier front end because its not as sensitive to inputs but will still make as good a turn as you are a rider and its been a steep learning curve from one brand to the other and im still figuring it out. I dont mind the wider feel either, at 5’9 on a good day and 190 pounds the thicker bike is more comfortable and more forgiving for weight changes and feels to me to be less affected balance wise to the position of my body weight. I agree the honda can really turn and a lot of guys like that, but for me personally, i dont see why i should sacrifice comfort, confidence on the bike, and most important on a 250, power, for turning ability i MIGHT use once in a blue moon

@@mxengineer1 there is a trick you may know about, try switching out the cartridge oil to 2.5wt or a mix of 2.5 and 5wt oil with the stock valving. I have tried this before and it does add some plushness to the forks plus it is a cheap and easy thing to try. You can keep your springs but make it more compliant but the clickers will have to be adjusted of course. I have been doing my own suspension work since the early 90's. Hope this is helpful. :)

The Hondas seem so right and usually ride Honda but I always hear the suspension is really good on the Yamahas. But maybe if you get the suspension dialed in with some MX33 and a bigger rear tire might be the option. I'll have to test before I buy they both seem like great bikes. Being a smaller dude I feel the honda might suit me better though from what I hear.

How does the YZ compare to a 350? I hear so many people say "it's like a mini 450" so would it be similar to a 350? I originally ordered a Honda but they are completely sold out, so I'm waiting to pick my YZ up. I believe you can't go wrong with red or blue I think these are the best bikes for 22' right now.

The 350 is still my favorite combination of power/weight/handling in a 4-stroke dirt bike. The YZ250F is the only 250F I get off after riding and think mini 450F power wise. It simply has the best partial throttle response and torque feel of the current 250F's and you can easily change the engine character with the Yamaha Tuner app on your smart phone.

The only reason I didn't get one was because I'm not familiar with Euro bikes, and they are very expensive where I'm at. $14,900 CAD. I know Yamaha, and I feel the YZ250f is no slouch for me. @@mxengineer1 Just want to say, I finally have my new 22' YZ250f and it is amazing. Right off the bat the power and pull is insane for a 250, I thought the ergos would feel odd but the bike is extremely comfortable for me 5'9, 155lbs. I'm not sure why people say they are wide because I compared the shrouds to my YZ125 and surprisingly it is barely wider. I think it's the airbox cover that makes it seem wider than it actually is. Hope this helps anyone looking into Yamaha.

If you ride some other 22 250F's back to back with the YZ250F the extra width (mostly higher and more forward) is noticeable but as you noted once you spin a lap or two it feels great. I actually owned a 2007 CRF150R big wheel when they first came out ( I am 6' 2" 195 lbs) and really enjoyed riding that bike. The 150R is small but has a carb and kick start (probably same as your older YZ250F). EFI and e-start are so well developed and work great but hey if the 150R feels right go for the smaller and lighter weight bike. No wrong decisions!

I’ve never had a fuel injected bike, the carb on my 04 is junk and needs replaced probably, hoping less can go wrong with the fuel injection? @@Drivelikeitzstoln I think you will be amazed how well EFI (and e-start works). Make sure the dealer goes over all the details on your bike too. There is a "cold start" knob that needs pushed in for first start of the day and you turn the throttle forward to close this knob. Also don't turn the throttle when hitting the starter as it won't start with the throttle turned. All very simple and straightforward compared to a carb on a 250F. Have fun!

'22 CRF250R has much less engine braking - that helps it feel more 2-stroke like. The lightweight/ quick handling/excellent cornering give the '22 CRF250R almost 125 2-stroke like agility. Very fun bike to ride.

All that you have to do to make the Yamaha turn fast like the Honda is to set your fork height to suit the way that you want it to feel. It is impossible to compare bikes without first adjusting the rear sag to suit your weight, adjust the suspension clickers and fork height to suit your terrain and riding style. All of those adjustments on the bike are there for a reason.

Yes the adjustments you mention do make a difference and can dial in a bike. I dialed the settings (clickers/fork height/handlebars) on the '22 YZ250F in the video for me. I've done this back to back many times with a 19/20/21/22 YZ250F and the blue machine typically is 1~2 secs per lap slower but is sure does make wonderful power and has the best suspension too. I don't think the 22 YZ250F can match the lightweight and playful feel of a '22 CRF250R. I recently bought this '22 YZ250F from my buddy so I will be doing some more of these back to back rides soon.

I think if you had the KYB suspension setup for you and changed the maps you would have had more control on the throttle. You said it was really torquey but that can be changed with the push of a button. I have a map that removes a lot of engine breaking and gives me a lot of linear power vs the low end twitch you seemed to have had in this video.

All valid points! Yes I ended buying this 22 YZ250F from my buddy Dave and did spin clickers and slid the forks up in the clamps. I also tried many EFI maps and ended up with Keefer Free Flowing and Yamaha's Hard Hitting. The 20/21/22 YZ250F's I've ridden never won a back to back lap time comparison for me but I still think it is perhaps the best 250F stock off the showroom floor with great suspension and a quick hitting broad and tunable engine.

Yes according to MXA magazine the '22 Honda CRF250R weighs about 219 lbs before gas while the '22 Yamaha YZ250F is about 228 lbs before gas. For me the Honda is the lightest and most agile feeling 250F. Very fun bike that could be even better with suspension that felt like the KYB's on the YZ250F;)

@@anthonyduzevich6421 For me the '22/23 CRF250R sets the bar for "Fun to Ride" 250F and is amazing in the corners. The feels so lightweight and agile in motion. The previous Husky (22 chassis) weighs about the same (with air forks) and also corners well with the lowered suspension. Both will require some tuning to dial in the suspension.

The 22/23 YZ250F have the best off the showroom floor suspension that works for a wide range of riders and a somewhat cramped ergo feel and less agile more weighty feel in motion...and also an easy to use engine mapping app. The 24 YZ250F gets more agile and quick handling and better ergos - might give it the edge over the CRF250R. You know I really want to! For now the FX and RX versions are based on the moto versions of these models so I feel the general characteristics of each model will be similar - especially in a back to back ride. The YZ250FX does offer a 6-speed transmission for some added top end speed but for the trail and track riding I do that 6th gear would never be used!

@@mxengineer1 true. I do think Honda screwed up by not going with a WR 6 speed gear box. I ride a wide range of stuff from very knarly trail to gncc style fast flowing trail, from technical hill climbs to bombing natural terrain features. I make good use of the granny gear and the 6th gear and hate the close ratio gear boxes that necessitate so much more shifting. That said, I think I'm about to buy a Honda lol. wish I could buy both! I have not ridden a YZ250FX for a few years but I do remember liking the lower 1st gear for trials/technical type riding and 6th was nice on the fire roads. I think Yamaha may spend a little more time on the low to mid RPM fuel mapping on the FX models too. The '22 CRF250R tops the "Fun to Ride" meter in my book for a 250F - super light and agile feeling with little engine braking and those "just feels right" Honda ergo's. I prefer the stock 250RX suspension setting over the 250R setting - works much better over a wider range of terrain.

I really like the 21/22 AER forks which for are noticeably better than the 20 AER forks. Honda likes the CRF's to have a firm and controlled suspension feel with little fore/aft chassis pitch. I like the shock but I think the '22 CRF250R fork setting is a little firm for my preferences but faster riders do not seem to notice.

I like the lighter weight and more compliant carcass of the Pirelli Scorpian MX tires and for riding here in Ohio the wear was slightly better than Dunlop MX33's. 250F's came with 100mm wide rear tires for many years and only recently did some OEM begin to specify 110mm wide rear tires. The Pirelli rear tire on the 22/23 CRF250R's does have a slightly smaller profile than a Dunlop MX33 in the same size. I rode a '22 CRF250R with the 110 Pirelli Scorpian rear tire and could notice the extra braking and acceleration traction.

Yes - it can work for anyone. The bars come mounted in the most forward position so that is good for tall riders. For me at 6'2" tall I prefer the pegs to be back and down. I am not a fan of taller seats but prefer to move the footpegs. I can ride the YZ250F totally stock and adapt quickly.

That is more dependent on you, your skill level, and the characteristics you like in a bike. The Yamaha YZ250F has the best off the showroom floor suspension that works for a wide range of rider skills and weights. The YZ250F engine has excellent low to mid power and is easily tunable with a free GYTR tuning app on your phone. The YZ250F is also about 8 lbs heavier, has wider feeling shrouds, and loud exhaust. The 22 CRF250R sets the bar for fun to ride with a broad and smooth powerband, excellent cornering that makes even average riders feel like a hero, and those "just feel right" perfect Honda ergos. The 22 CRF250R forks are firm and most likely will need a revalve to get them dialed in. Red or Blue...no wrong choice!

Do you think the "feel" of the honda is a factor to your body size? would the ergos feel same down to smaller people?

Honda has always been strong in ergonomics and this has even more of that "just feels right" Honda feel. I think smaller riders will feel the same.

Yes this YZ250F actually has the full FMF 4.1 Ti exhaust system installed and it does liven up the power pretty much everywhere especially when combined with the hard hitting map from Yamaha

I think Honda rode the dual exhaust train for a long time. The single exhaust offers lighter weight, lower cost, and thinner ergos.

Yes it would be cool to try a pipe and updated ECU map on the CRF. Stock the CRF is very close and holds it own based on lap times.

@@revengeof1307 Yes the YZ250F is a tick taller than the 22 CRF250R but not by much! You can get thinner seats and slack out the suspension a little to get closer to the ground. The Husky FC250 is the lowest seat height moto bike out there now I think.

@@revengeof1307 yep the shock and fork are both 10mm shorter, but the testers all say in real life that ends up being a full inch lower when riding. has to do with the shorter springs sagging more and the linkage ratios etc.

Yes both aluminum frame 250F's with downdraft intake designs. However the YZ250F scoops air from the front of the bike into an air cleaner mounted where the fuel tank is on the CRF. The fuel tank on the CRF sits forward and high, away from the center of gravity of the bike while the YZF fuel tank is mounted under the seat near the center of gravity of the bike. The Honda is about 7~8 lbs lighter and this lighter weight is noticeable while riding. Both are fun bikes - pick a color!

The Honda is not faster you drove the Yamaha slower almost the whole time when you started accually driving it was faster you drove the Honda on top gear the whole time and kept dropping in the yamaha

Thanks for watching my video. I did my best to be consistent in how I rode both bikes. I have done this back to back a few times with these same bikes at different tracks and the '22 CRF250R always had a faster laptime than the 22 YZ250F...just the way it worked out. These back to back rides are a great way to get a feel of the different characteristics of each bike. Both are great bikes!

Honda has a long history of high quality in all of their products and Yamaha also has a good reputation. I believe the owner's manuals on both of these bikes recommend piston/ring replacement every 10~12 hours: I wonder if anyone other than professional race teams replace these parts so quickly? Most of my friends with 250F's seem to go 40~70 hours on a top end before piston/ring replacement.
