I have a 22 dct. The difference from normal mode to N mode is this: Eco - the acceleration of a 2002 honda civic. Normal - Average sedan N mode - I almost S*** myself when I floored it for the first time (private road). The thing burnt out all the way to second gear. (Traction control is off in N mode and it was slightly uphill with a couple leaves on the ground. The thing shifts so hard it slaps you in the back. The steering is both heavy and sharp. The grip on turns is OBSCENE. This was my first time driving a FAST car. My heart was beating out of my chest. The roar of the engine with the CRAZY popping of the exhaust seemed to match my adrenaline. (Pops are quiet at low boost and LOUD if you are full boost and let off the throttle. The manual has more and louder pops.) About the gap between shifts - there is no gap. You just get slapped back into your seat because it instantly shifts into next gear. I never thought I would like the car as much as I do. I do NOT regret getting the N instead of a golf R, GR corolla, or Civic type R, or STI. The STI has an outdated engine that blows up all the time. My last car was a wrx that I had for a decade. It ran like a clock and I drove it very hard. But I know I got lucky that it didn't blow up, as 3 of the 4 people I know with a WRX or STI blew it up before 100k miles. The Golf R is fast but has no attitude, aggressiveness, or playfulness while driving. The GR has a bad feeling and slow manual transmission, takes too long for boost, and cannot drift despite having a drift button. I consider the N even with the Type R in terms of the experience, (The type R is a hair faster and DEFINITELY more refined) though the type R has better seats. The type R, IMHO is NOT worth the extra 10-15k over the N, unless you really love Honda and you don't want to use Hyundai's warranty. (The engine will likely break at least once in the 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. The cool thing about the warranty is that it is not supposed to be invalidated by track use, but some dealerships are denying that claim. The warranty experience is 100% tied to how good the dealership is where you buy the car.) With that 10-15k, you could turn the N into a MONSTER. You could modify the wheel wells for much wider tires, you could get a body kit, you could overhaul the entire engine, etc. This all now applies to the Elantra N, except for the looks. The elantra N is ugly as sin without serious body work IMO. This was rambly, but I included everything I could think of off the top of my head.

I have a 2019 Veloster N, and I have a combined 90 mile commute to and from work. I drive everywhere in N-Custom mode with everything in N-Mode, except I put the suspension in Normal-Mode and turn the traction control off. Best car ever! The only downside is frequent oil changes and premium gas, but I think it’s definitely worth it. I love my 6-speed, but the DCT looks fun too.

@@newjdm Well, for “normal usage” they recommend oil changes every 6,000 miles in the owner’s manual. However, under “severe driving conditions,” which includes “frequently driving under high speed or rapid acceleration/deceleration,” they recommend an oil change every 3,000 miles. So, I get oil changes more frequently because I drive my car hard all the time, and I put a lot of miles on it. I feel like it’s virtually impossible to not drive it hard. I also bought an extra wheel and tire I keep in my trunk because I’ve had a couple blowouts with the low profile tires hitting big potholes, and it usually takes a few days to special order a new tire.

@@Uncrowned_King_Benz I've had a firebird, Trans am, camaro all from late 80's. Notable newer cars- 2013 Dart turbo, 2017 charger rt, 2021 elantra N line, 2021 challenger srt scatpack widebody. Plus alot of economy cars in between. The scatpack is my second favorite but it costs too much to drive and handles poorly. Great for drag and roll racing but not much else. The price between the 2 was almost $20,000. And the 0-60 difference is less than 1 second along with 1/4 mile.

Michael. First of all, one of the best and most thorough reviews of the 2022 Veloster N. Thanks. I picked up a pre-owned 2022 Red Veloster N DCT with 21K miles in January 2024. I specifically wanted the DCT and faster shifting with the intention of running autocross which I did this past weekend. The Veloster performed extremely well in all aspects of the autocross course; accelerating through slalom cones, hard braking, and very precise handling and steering in very tight turns and cornering. On my last couple of runs, I would engage NGS before getting the start flag without launch control for burn out jack rabbit starts off the line. My fastest course time was comparable to the slower times of Porsche Caymans! I've had a Mazda Speed 3 and Type R. You can't beat the outstanding performance value (and smile factor) you get from this car!

Its fucking amazing in every way. These videos don't do it justice. The second you get behind the wheel and you floor it you will be sold

I’m 6’2” and fit in the back comfortably…at least for an hour. My 6’4” son just got the 2021 Veloster N and it’s fantastic. I don’t even have the seat all the way back when I drive bc the steering wheel is far away, & I have long arms. All the vids I’ve watched imply that it may be too small for some….well it is a compact hatch but there’s room. You’re likely to be too big in girth before you’re too tall to enjoy it. If you’re just tall, not a problem. I’m 225lbs & my son is 220lbs. Hope this helps some of you a little.

2020 6mt owner here. Got mine in March 2020 when deals could be had. Some bolt ons abs a tune and this car comes to life even more. Going big turbo and meth soon.. the custom made exhaust manifold is taking a while) But even stock this car is amazing

This was going to be my upgrade from a 2015 Focus ST. When I saw it was missing a door in the back I changed my mind. Picked up a Mazda 3 HB TB PP the next day. Coming from a big turbo ST there is a big difference in power, but it would have been the same with the N. There' also already tuners out with hardware for the Mazda 3 HB. Got mine in the mail over the weekend and can't wait to get it on.

Have you tried driving without your legs with the steering wheel assist ! I had tested in the highway and it does keeps you in the lane but once the lane cut off , the system sees the broken lines and tells you to grab the steering wheel .. not bad for huyndai aiming for a system like a self driving vehicle !!!

How does the transmission on the DCT model work when in SPORT or N Mode, as far as shifting throughout the rev range? Is it left entirely to the driver to upshift and downshift at any desired point throughout the range (as if driving a true manual transmission), or does the onboard computer interfere with driver input at certain revs if no input is detected from the driver?

1-2 is automatically shifted but you can bounce limiter in every other gear doesnt matter which mode you’re in. I think its to avoid too much gear shock up shifting up from first.

Ian here! Owner of the Mazda 3 Turbo. They are very different cars in the end. The Veloster N is definitely more fun and exciting to drive. The Mazda3 Turbo is quick but lacks exhaust sound and the snappy shifting that the Veloster N has. I bought the Mazda 3 Turbo because it’s a great everyday driver, it’s comfortable and the interior is really nice with a bit more space. But I did really enjoy driving the Veloster N.

@@ACCELER8TV Hey Ian thanks for the reply! I currently have a 2018 Mazda 3 and I love how far that car has come. But seeing that both cars are similar in price makes me second guess myself. That being said, I still prefer the Mazda 3 turbo as a daily driver so I think you made a good call. I just pray that they can increase the performance numbers by the next redesign in 2024 to compete with all the great cars that are available right now!

The Mazda is simply not a sports car. It is meant to be a well engineered commuter. Is you want a comfortable commuter get the Mazda. If you want a fun and sporty commuter get the Veloster

@@nateap88 So if someone gave you an Alpine, which has a soft suspension, that isn't a hot hatch? And the seats in it don't recline so it is plenty uncomfortable. Does that make it a hot hatch? By your logic, a hot hatch cannot have a quiet and roomy interior or be a comfortable commuter. So a Saab 9-5 with 400 hp wouldn't do it for you. Or a Volvo C30?
