I find myself split on this car a bit. My 2018 GTI doesn’t have an LSD so it is being replaced. Initially I thought the Veloster N was a slam dunk, but I’m not quite so sure after shopping. I can get a GTI at a discount but the dealer experience with Hyundai hasn’t been promising as the supply is short and prices at MSRP or higher. I find myself wrestling with saving $5,000 that I can spend on making the suspension what I want via modest items like Koni shocks, a rear swaybar, etc. Maybe I’m spoiled after several years in the GTI. Kudos to Hyundai and Biermann as they are kicking some serious ass.

I own a 2020 Veloster N so I’m a bit biased, but the car is so fun to drive and absolutely a steal for what your getting for the money. I’m sad my year didn’t get the new seats and new MMI. The slightly older MMI is perfectly fine though. No issues and it still feels new. The seats is the older ones are just ok. The new seats look so much better though. I don’t think you can swap them in either. It’s my weekend car as I drive a work truck throughout the week. It does have little start up/cold start issues sometimes. I’m not sure if they have worked them out in the newer years but it’s not really a big deal. The difference between the “comfort” drive mode and the most aggressive “N” mode is shocking. It really does feel like 2 different cars. Of course once you find your custom settings that works for you, that’s pretty much all you use. I don't mind the 3-door thing, but I wish it was the other door. You're most likely going to use it for groceries or a kid or whatever and you just want to open the door behind the driver's door, throw it in, and be on your way. As-is you have to walk almost entirely around the car to buckle in a kid or throw 3 bags of groceries in there, and that sucks. As-is the configuration is good for uber drivers, and that's about it. . I drove the R and was quite impressed with it for the price. I'd love to drive the N with more power. Though I think I'd go with the 6sp. That 6sp shifter feels great, it's right up there with Honda in my book, it's a rock solid shifter, feels great.

VW hangs the motor off the front of the car, and that's probably the biggest contributing factor to the numb front end. VW's are nice but, this thing is faster and handles better. More fun for the money. I remember seeing an older Veloster, when I was an oil change tech. I was amazed at the suspension on this thing, from looking at it from underneath. I finished the oil change and raced upstairs, from the pit, to see what it was. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was a Hyundai. The driver was an enthusiast, and loved the handling. This car, I imagine to be the best version, so far. I wish Hyundai would have released the i30N 4-dr hatch in Canada and the US. It would have been a great contender in the same space as the GTI. With only 3 doors and that wing, the Veloster is just a bit too aggressive for my taste.

I have the 2020 Veloster N manual, and the suspension in N mode is very harsh riding. In custom mode I put the suspension in normal mode, steering in sport and everything else in N mode and its just about perfect. No wonder they felt it was a "little firm", the suspension in N mode is for really smooth race tracks only.

As someone who owns a 2018 Swift and actually being on a frezny with the new i30 N Perf, which I am getting in few months, I am so pissed that the Veloster is not being sold in EU countries. Most likely I would go for that over the new i30N Facelift, but hey. The fact alone that we are talking about Performance quality cars, HYUNDAI cars, says alot for the company.

I enjoyed your review. Parts were vague for me as I am not familiar with most of the other cars you reference. Some of that is on me. I am comparing with Tesla not VW or BMW. I love your spirited driving, long ago, I had a '70 Mach I Mustang with Ford's (no BS) competition suspension. Harsh but did what it was told. I put almost 100k hard miles on that car. Much of it on twisty mountain roads. I have recently been considering Tesla options... I knew Hyundai offered lots of tech features without having to buy the top trim models (Ford and GM, you know who I am outing). I like the tech, of which Tesla is easily king. I also believe in always having a plan B. So I have been learning about Hyundai models.
