Jeep has done a great job with the Active Drive Low system in the Compass & Renegade. Put some meaty AT's on it, rock rails (and if you're feeling up to it) better skid plates and it'll take you a lot of places that'll surprise you. They're excellent forest trail runners that are still comfortable commuters, but they're no Wrangler and they're not intended to be (as you pointed out). Excellent balanced review Ryan! i.m.o any Trail Rated Jeep would beat a Subaru on a trail. While the Renegade, Compass don't have real 4-lo transfer cases they beat anything with a CVT transmission. An Outback Wilderness comes close but it doesn't have towpoints, uses a CVT transmission, no rocksliders, no fuel tank skid plate, and no transmission skidplate. Having a CVT offroad makes life so much harder than it needs to be. Not having any skidplates makes anything involving rocks really sketchy. Not having towpoints makes it when that CVT "falls down" when you need it most. You have to resort to crawling on the ground trying to loop a strap or j-hook around something strong enough to get a tow out. The Wilderness models come with screw in towpoints but they aren't rated the same as Jeep tow hooks are.

If you have the option of going over a rock or squeezing past it, you might want to go over it. Squeezing up against it so that you scrape your wheels will up the chances of poking a hole in the sidewall. Looks like the little Jeep is pretty capable. Nice score Ryan.

Congratulations to developers for the SelecTerrain programs. I tested every driving mode (do not have 4Low and Rock mode), so as i said last night i was driving on roads who is covered with snow,... We love our 2018 Renegade, it fits our lifestyle perfectly both my wife and I are empty nesters and we didn't need a Wrangler or a G Cherokee or even a Cherokee for that matter. We did look at the Compass but we weren't impressed with the 2018 Models interior layout, We know they've recently revamped the interiors on the Compass and I am impressed with it, would we go buy one today ? NO. 30,000 miles of trouble free motoring all we have done is basic maintenance, We had 1 recall notice for the oil consumption but ours has never used less than 1/2 a quart in 5000 mile oil change intervals so We opted not to have the MultiAir recalibrated as per the recall. We average about 28mpg combined which a majority of our driving is more than 42 miles too and from the nearest major city. Taken it on nice road trip to NM from Texas and back 1300 miles round trip and was getting close to 32mpg at 75mph. I don't drive like a maniac and just set the cruise control. There are some things I wished were better, it is a little slow but not as bad as one might think. I hope they bring the Hybrid version over to the US here on the next update. 240 combine HP should definitely wake up the Renegade. I might go test out the Compass with its Hybrid powertrain once the local dealer gets its stock replenished. Ours also handled the 9 inches of snow last year just fine didn't even put into Snow Mode did it all in 2wd and Traction Control off made quick work and had to pick up all the Wife's employees who couldn't get their cars out their driveways. I enjoyed your review and good luck with the New Compass !!

Probably just one of the soon to be found many electrical problems that Chrysler, Jeep, Fiat, or whatever they want to call themselves this week have....tons of electronic and electrical problems in these vehicles...well honestly in all vehicles in general, the more electronic garbage that's added the more electrical/electronics issues you'll find. When you buy a new vehicle finding one with lower trim levels is usually best, as it cuts down a bit on the electronics stuff that you'll have...and the less crap that's going to fail on you down the road when the warranty is no longer there.

I think when you get this thing on pavement you should do some measuring with the tape measure. Typically ground clearance is not measured from the rocker, it's typically under the differentials or center crossmember on a independent suspension vehicle like this. Like the way a 4Runner has 9.6 inches of clearance. There's WAY more than 9.6 inches of clearance under the rockers.

Crossovers are getting more capable every day. I have done a similar rock climb with my Hyundai, which has a 7DCT (1st gear is very low though), it climbed very well although it scraped a bit.
@KTMcaptain3 жыл бұрын
Be careful. A DCT uses a clutch to transfer torque between the transmission and engine. A clutch wears down while it is slipping and is not very capable when partially engaged. Automatics use a torque converter which actually multiplies torque while it slips and can run around indefinitely partially engaged without damaging components (so long as the heat buildup doesn’t exceed safe fluid temps).
3 жыл бұрын
You reallt sure you are climbing?
@moonsapling3 жыл бұрын
@@KTMcaptain I am aware of that. I even had the clutches checked after I passed 250 000 kilometers on the clock. They showed minimal signs of wear. As I stated in my original comment the 7DCT has a very low 1st gear (3,90:1) and a very low final drive (4,90:1) which means that its slipping the clutch for just a few seconds. Torque converters are super in efficient and heat up fast without low range. I also know that I drive a Tucson and not a rock crawler. The mechanics estimated that my car will rust out before those clutches wear out, and if they ever do, I have a quoted price of 800 euros from the Hyundai dealership. I'm sure the Trailhawk adds some extra level of capability, but I got around ok in a base FWD Compass rental on all-seasons with little drama in the backroads of Maui. Honestly, I was pretty shocked at what the base Compass was doing considering how much I detested it's on-road sloth-like behavior (and that horrible transmission), but was thankful for a proper 1st/2nd gear to make it in and out of some deep ditches and over quite a few rocky portions with large vertical climbs past cliffs. That said, any vehicle with enough ground clearance could make it out of those situation, and I imagine this trail is steeper than it looks. I even saw some convertible mustangs on some of the parts of the Road to Hana, though their passengers didn't look very pleased. What shocked me the most though was the suspension. The ride was shockingly comfortable in a barebones compass going across all kinds of rocks, broken trails, and dipping into potholes.

F.y.i on the Selec-Terrain drive mode settings. Leaving it in Auto is best. The Selec-Terrain settings are very literal in how they handle the TCS and 4×4 system. Rock mode does not allow absolutely any wheel slip. Putting it in rock mode can prevent you from gaining momentum where the Auto mode wouldn't. Rock mode is for rock crawling like what one would do in Moab, Utah on slickrock. Use the Snow setting in snow. Use the Sand/Mud setting in sand or mud. Also all Jeeps in the past few years have "brake lock differentials", similar to Toyota's A-Trac system. When you were struggling to get over that rock ledge, you need to stay on the gas to allow the system time to its thing.

@Natethegreat200c3 жыл бұрын
@@user-cg7cc7zj3e not true. There’s letters sent to ever owner with all of the vehicles listed including dart renegade compass and the rest are all covered. What you stated was fca’s tacky previous way of handling the situation. Really, the dealers. Now there’s a fca repair that fixes it.
@user-cg7cc7zj3e3 жыл бұрын
@@Natethegreat200c it is true engine replacement or the only other option is piston ring replacement aka a new motor is easier for dealership. Like the other guy said, it's a class action. Good effort though.

How does this compare to the Bronco Sport Badlands other than the HP/torque? Approach angles, AWD capability, suspension, underbody protection, etc?
@drivingsports3 жыл бұрын
They have similar approach angles, but in all other dimensions the Compass Trailhawk is better. The Jeep also has better underbody protection. Both use the GKN all-wheel drive system, but the Ford offers the optional twinster rear clutch option on higher-end models, which Jeep does not.

I have seen the renegade trailhawks do CRAZY stuff. There is a youtube channel that is mapping all the colorado trails with a bunch of cherokee trailhawks... but that one has an actual 4low I believe and it has a rear locker.

Yes, the Cherokee is much more capable. But is getting ooooold. Needs a refresh.

@@coloradomallcrawlers YES! Ha! You guys actually made me want a Cherokee again. I had a love hate with my 2000. It was a great off-road vehicle but it was the worst thing I've ever driven on the rode. Death trap for sure. I have been kind going back and forth between a newer cherokee or an h3 hummer.
@gamergeek89333 жыл бұрын
@@drivingsports true but that is typical for the cherokee. The last one went 17 years with only 1 refresh and it was very minor.

@@gamergeek8933 I absolutely love the capability of the Cherokee Trailhawk, but the 3in lift seems to hinder its durability. Based on our buddy with the blue Renegade, I think the smaller trailhawks are probably more durable than the Cherokee… but definitely not as capable (based on our experience at Slaughterhouse with all of them). I wish you good luck in your car search!

That's not actually 4low. U need a transfer case that mechanically changes to a different gear ratio. The compass is a soft reader with all wheel drive
