Here in Brazil we used to have a trailhawk version with a 2.0 turbo diesel... less horsepower (170) but a lot more torque (35,7 kgfm), witch I own one. That extra torque helps a lot in those situations of rock crawling. For 2025 there's an upcoming 2.2 turbo diesel with 200 bhp and 45.8 kgfm!!! Looking forward to it!!

People are commenting that the Forester is 40k and the Compass is only 32. However a Forester is only 40k if you load it down with all available options. Actually it’s a touch under 40 according to a build I did on the Subaru website. The 32k Compass is the bare bones Trailhawk version. The version Ryan has in this video is the loaded version. So if you compare loaded to loaded Forester to Compass, Subaru wins hands down price wise. Plus more ground clearance and more reliability.

What I have figured out with my Jeep Grand Cherokee is that ROCK mode is more of an OFF ROAD mode. I use it for all types of terrains when I am off the beaten path. Sand mode, Mud mode, and Snow do not allocate power to the wheels with traction well. Rock mode does.

Test drove a 2023 Compass a few months ago. I really liked the performance. It wasn't neck-snapping, but it was quick enough to be an enjoyable drive. The interior is very nice too, but it was just a little too cramped for a 6' 3" person with long legs. I don't like my right knee resting against a hard center console. Its not that its so small I can't drive it, but there are roomier options for the price (which is too high imo).

I agree but this Jeep is more capable than what is being implied. It has a Power Takeoff Unit (PTU) , a tried and true transfer case. PTU simply means that it's front wheel drive. A PTU is simply a front wheel drive transfer case. Ryan is right though, It seems to be a bit worse than a standard (RWD) transfer case. But to act like it's overall less capable is just silly. It's a true 4X4. I like the way he's down playing it because it's being marketed towards women.

Maybe run them all using stock tires and then swap to the AT's using the same tire/tread pattern and run the test again. Very often reviewers say that tires are the issue on these sort of cars. I disagree. The issue is suspension travel. Even on basic obstacles, the suspension travel is so little that the tires are simply not contacting the ground with enough pressure to do anything. It doesn't matter what the tread pattern is like. I can guarantee that those same exact tires equipped on a solid axle vehicle would roll right over those spots where the crossover spins out.

The extra torque helps a lot in situations where the AWD system is managing the torque split. Captain...I believe we need more power! I'm giving it all she got! More power, less problems up the hill say a 5.0 L V8 that gets 500 hp and 510 lb feet of torque..yep that should do it for this jeep. 😜

@@brandonruhl1639 wow! Interesting, and yeah I've seen a lot of off-roading videos using crossovers and SUVs with CVTs, and most of them show the 'overheating' message at one point, but I've never seen a Subaru doing that, so that's why? it cuts the power to avoid it? But at the same time, they are still more capable than other cars using CVTs...

@@drivingsports Add to that the Subaru is available without a turbo....avoid those stupid turbo engines, people think they're great because they sound cute, but they aren't made for longevity in mind, and a regular naturally aspirated engine especially those 4 cylinder boxer engines are much easier and cheaper to service and repair when needed.

i have seen other review for this car and for cherokee and when the car is in full articulation with one wheel from each side on the air if you try to open and close the door of the passenger it stuck and does not close normal. Among many crossovers the only cars with this problem, bad body structure

I really hate the beeps and the “serv 4wd” warning this vehicle (and much of the competition on the compact suv market) does when the 4wd can’t do the job, switching the four wheel drive off and going back to 4x2 until it “cools down” (I doesn’t know exactly what it does) and them turns the 4wd on again after… those beeps and warnings are really frustrating

TrailDove rather than a TrailHawk. If lots of unmaintained road or trail driving is in your future, a base Wrangler (add locking rear diff), is a much better option. If a soft roader (any) with an "OffRoad" package is what you want, never leave the pavement without a good self recovery kit. Many of these softroaders are getting people too deep in the woods where the brake actuated traction control devices are overwhelmed and are leaving them stranded.

Exactly! I'd be interested to find out how flat the vehicle needs to be where it doesn't run into this issue. There are steep hills that people live on and it's just wild it's not a safety issue to let people go without a seatbelt

It should be illegal to call an SUV with an AWD system a 4x4. Even the buttons say 4 low, but it doesn't have a 2 speed transfer case. While it performs well for what it is, they need to stop calling their buttons 4lo and 4wd lock. I mean WTF.

There's no formal classification of namings 4x4, 4WD or AWD so manufacturers are calling their systems as they want.

@@4x4.tests.on.rollers If you're saying something is 4wd then people know it to be a 2 speed transfer case with 4hi and 4lo. If a vehicle doesn't have that it's AWD.

@@pacattack81 These are only spoken, informal definitions. There are no official norms, there is no law defining the systems and namings. Furthermore - If you look at J1952 by SAE, there's even no names like 4x4 or 4WD, all starts with AWD. That's why sticking to namings is pointless, what's import is the mechanical structure of the system.
