Really nice layout Shaun! The track plan is well thought out and your scenery and structures are realistic and thematically consistent. The black Smokey and the Bandit car takes the cake! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the inspiration.

The trestle scene is excellent! To make a true DT&I layout, you need to put in a few concrete arches that were supposed to be for the electric locomotives back in the 1930s.

Very nice! Especially the the mobile home with the working television 📺. Your layout is coming right along Shaun. Can't wait to see the progress on the expansion. I know that you'll do well and won't let us down. Once I get my health back I'll try to find the motivation to start on my shelf layout. Thanks again for sharing with us fellow modelers.

I am enjoying your series of videos showcasing you layout. Looking forward to more updates. Right now I'm starting at the beginning to fully appreciate what you have created. I especially enjoy coverage of your industries. I am new to KZbin so not sure of their policies, but are you able to disclose the source of the lumber loads used at Carter Lumber? I"m modeling the mid 1950s and the wide variety of loads shown could be easily used for my application. Keep up the great work! Thanks, Thomas
@ModernDTI

Lumber would come from the Pacific Northwest via the SP. Glad you’re enjoying the layout! I’m mid-edit for an updated concept video now so watch for that soon 😊

I’ve been working on trees the last week or so for my layout addition, so I spent most of my time looking at your trees. You did a great job creating a number of unique trees and really avoided the “cookie cutter” look. (I figured out how to turn the volume down😂)
@ModernDTI
@ModernDTI Жыл бұрын
It’s a mix of sage branches, woodland scenics canopy, super trees, and ones I made myself with pillow filling, spray paint, and ground foam of various sizes and colors. I take care to clean off the branches the closer they are to the edge as well. I only have eleventeen thousand or so left to build 😆

Shaun is this layout completely made up? Or are there real locations on here . Looks fantastic!
@ModernDTI
@ModernDTI Жыл бұрын
A mix. For example: the entire town of Thackery is made up except the name and depot. Also, there are prototypical structures, albeit scaled down, such as the Quincy bridge, Chillicothe and Thackery Depots, and eventually the Midland City and Ironton depots. Additionally, the paper mill (mostly unbuilt as of typing this) and the grain elevator are heavily based on the Chillicothe mill and Thackery elevator, respectively. Keeping it as a reference point but still adaptable to anywhere on the conceptual system is a must on a smaller layout like mine!

I am new to model railroading. Great layout. When you did that hinge for entry, is there a special track you have to get to do that or are you able to cut existing track to fit? Just wondering how that works. Sorry if dumb question.
@ModernDTI
@ModernDTI Жыл бұрын
It’s just regular flex track. The hinged end is cut at an angle to allow it to open, and the other end has the rail points filed on either side sort of like a turnout so they meet up smoothly. The track is extra secure with nails in the track and liquid nails underneath. Hope that helps!

Hey Shaun, great tour! Question about the gold, black and white cars at 3:57 in the video - are they the eBay Chinese cars that are like 12 for $6.00 or something like that? They look good by the way as I think they are 1:100, correct? Thanks for posting the tour!- Brian
@ModernDTI
@ModernDTI Жыл бұрын
They were like $20 for $20 off eBay yeah. But they are true 1:87 from what I can tell.

What plant do you use to make your trees? Very realistic
@ModernDTI
@ModernDTI Жыл бұрын
That is the forest canopy material from Woodland Scenics. The larger trees are sage branches, and the background ones are just standard off the shelf stuff.

Fantastic layout! As a matter of interest, why do you cut off all the trip pins from your couplers?
@ModernDTI
@ModernDTI Жыл бұрын
I think they are ugly, and really serve no purpose if you don’t use magnetic uncoupling.
@railwayjade
@railwayjade Жыл бұрын
@@ModernDTI that's cool, I did notice your wagons had the air hoses modelled, so that's a great detail. Also less problems as there is no pin to get bent out of shape, etc

When you expand, are you planning a yard and diesel shop?
