Great to see a no nonsense road test. Yes, not the most exciting car in the world but probably the best value. There are only 2 specifications in the UK, Excite and Exclusive. The Exclusive you tested does have real leather interior including the door cards, with alcantara accents on front seats as seen in your video. The Excite model has faux leather interior. We have a new 22 year model which now has a full digital instrument cluster. SAIC, the Chinese manufacturer who owns the MG brand produces about 9 million cars a year! It is very very jerky at slow speeds, just a slight press on the accelerator has the car shooting forwards, meaning I have to be very cautious making small manoeuvres such as parking however when in start/stop mode and using the auto handbrake, the car is slow to respond to pressing the accelerator which is a bit worrying. We have a 2 litre AWD in Australia and we love it. As for the A/C controls many cars are using the touchscreen (including Tesla) and I have found it to be better than all of the vehicles that I drive (work etc) Having the screen /buttons so high on the dash means I don't have to look down and usually you only need to change the temperature or fan speed. Want to change from face to feet has you pushing 1 button instead of scrolling or twisting a dial. The 2 litre has 40 percent more power and torque and it easts hills and corners. Much better than the 1.5 litre that you drove.

Good review and fair conclusion. My main concern re MG is their anti-corrosion measures, or apparent lack thereof. I also have concerns about the longevity of any DCT, let alone an unproven box in a budget car. However, of course, there's the 7-year warranty, which will alleviate these concerns for most buyers. That leaves the issue of no separate aircon controls, but that's hardly limited to the MG HS. Objectively, these Chinese-made MGs are way better quality than anything the last incarnation of MG-Rover made. And many detractors seem to forget that other than the likes of the MGB and MGF, MGs had been badge-engineered nothings since the 60s. This seems a car worthy of serious consideration for anyone simply wanting a decent, practical, roomy, and comfortable car, who doesn't care what their neighbours think. As far as excitement goes, I think it's hard to find something remotely exciting at this price-point that also possesses all the other qualities that this car offers. And as far as emotional connection goes, I know I have tended to develop an emotional bond to cars that serve me well, irrespective of the level of excitement they offer. My disclaimer is that I'm not someone who thinks there's really such a thing as a do-all car. For me, reliable and practical daily transport is one car, and excitement is another car, or more. However, I accept that if your dreams don't include super cars, as mine do, many people think that a full-size Range Rover is all the car you'll ever want, and a VW Golf is all the car you'll ever need. Problem is the Range Rover is huge and too expensive for most people, and many people want something a bit bigger than a Golf. What is the best car in-between these two, I don't know. For most people, including me, it's not the HS, but for many, I suspect it could actually be. And, I wouldn't rule out a car like this as my family's daily.

We have a new MG HS Trophy on a 73 plate. After a couple of months of driving it I can say it’s ok for what it is! But after coming from a Ford Kuga to this I don’t think I’ll have another one. I’ll be going back to a Kuga to be honest. One good point is on a run you get around a steady 38-40 to the gallon! So swings and roundabouts as they say.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru Жыл бұрын
👍 there’s far better than the Kuga out there for the price to be fair mate, well worth having a look around. The HS is very decent value for money in all fairness but by no means best in class.

Oh I agree about other vehicles been better than Kuga for the price! My wife is disabled and needs her wheelchair in the boot at all times. For her we found that the Kuga was the best option for her personally. But we both liked the the look of the MG HS. It is a great looking car. It’s comfortable, the body styling is nice to look at from all angles. Driving position is decent as I’m 6ft 3in. And I like the digital display. But as you say it’s an ok drive but nothing that excites you. The info display is a little annoying sometimes but it’s nothing you can’t live with. I do actually like the relative simplicity of the interior as it’s a lot easier to keep clean compared to other cars we have had. I also like the fact that you can see the bonnet which you don’t get on some vehicles. It’s early days yet and hopefully there will be more positives than negatives! And quite rightly for the price you would be very silly to not give it serious consideration. So time will tell going forward.

Having driven a MG HS as a hire car (for comparison, my car is a Mazda CX-30 satnav auto) , my view is they've got lots of good-looking features but none of them work particularly well. The ropey transmission and poorly designed infotainment system are definite problems. If I had 22-25 K to spend on a car, I'd be looking at what I could get for that money on the second hand market.

Great Review, perfect summary. An interesting SUV for families with a budget that fits the price. The Chinese are good at value point filling of market gaps at amazing competitive prices. Current increases with cost of living along with vehicle availability or wait times, will see customer requirements change. Customers if not already doing so, will soon be basing their car choice on availability, speed of delivery if ordering from new, affordability and value for money with what is or is not included at base price. This MG is a perfect example of fitting into this type of choice calculations in the future. Those with larger budgets will continue to add additional requirements to their car choice. With all things in life, it often comes down to budgets controlling the consumer choice. MG are giving customers a choice, not previously available at this price point, which has to be commended (Some, may raise MG Factory working conditions in China and Thailand, along with material sourcing considerations. Such concerns tend to be exclusive to a privilege budgets ability to point-out!).

There's a definite correlation between chain/belt and fuel economy. That's why these petrol MGs aren't the greatest fuel misers. The trade off is not only no worries and costs re belt replacement, but also likely robustness and longevity of the engine. I wouldn't be surprised if in another five years, we're not seeing a lot more engine faliures of the current crop of high-tech 1L engines, particularly the 3-cylinders. What concerns me most about this powertrain is the double-clutch gearbox. Ford, in particular, but also VW, have had ongoing problems with their DCTs. I know Ford's lower-end PowerShift gearboxes used dry clutches, which was their Achilles heel. I don't know what clutch type MG uses. Anyway, only time will tell regarding MGs DCT, but I think they're an unnecessary complication for a car like this. However, if you're buying one of these brand new with a 7-year warranty, you're almost certainly going to have sold it before the warranty expires, unless you're buying it as your last car on retirement. That seems to leave only one issue and one concern. The issue is no separate aircon controls. The concern is over MGs apparent lack of ant-corrosion protection. I'm definitely not a Chinese MG hater, though. Objectively, these Chinese-made MGs are way better quality than anything the last incarnation of MG-Rover made. And people seem to forget that other than the likes of the MGB and MGF, MGs had been badge-engineered nothings since the 60s. @@nigel.w the gearbox feels very good on this new car, far better than a Ford Powers41t at any point during its life. The VAG DSG boxes are generally very decent, you hear about a few issues but when you consider how many are on the roads it’s probably a fairly low percentage. Servicing is key as always.
@nigel.w2 жыл бұрын
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I agree that servicing is key, and although I accept that the problems with VAG DSG boxes are nowhere near as great as with the Ford boxes, the small percentage is nonetheless large numbers. When I bought a three year old 30k mile Skoda Superb eight or nine years ago, it was a known issue. And in daily operation, you can see why problems can arise. The first-gear engagement and first to second gear change are far from smooth. Keep doing that in stop-start traffic every morning and every night, and you can see the likelihood of problems arising. What I did, and I don't know whether I was actually doing good or bad, but I used to manually put the box in second when in a traffic jam, and the operation was much smoother.

MGs tend to suffer more depreciation than most. Even their EVs haven't fared that well, in a market where most EVs have fared much better than ICE cars. You can easily get one of the early MG EVs for 20k. Less than two years old, circa 20k miles, top spec, depreciation approaching 30%. About 20% in the first year. And the ICE cars fare significantly worse. I don't think it's horrendous. It's not like the old Alfas. And, of course, perecentages are only one aspect. You're obviously losing far less actual cash than you would buying the likes of a new BMW. However, you would have thought, given the top spec facelift version of the ZS EV with longer range costs 5k more than the previous top spec model, and given the generally stronger market performance of used EVs, that the older model would have fared better, even taking the lower range into consideration. I know it's not comparing apples with apples, and doesn't exactly answer your question, but it hopefully demonstrates well enough that MG seems to still be suffering a significant barand image problem. I suspect that the best way to buy a new HS is by way of a lease/PCP deal, rather than cash. Or, wait a year, and buy a gently used one.

follow up from my previous comment a while ago, i fully regret buying one, had i known then what i know now i would have picked something else, MG didn't tell buyers about the after market cheap dongle you have to have stuck to your window to get dab working as they don't have the chips to fix them, the screen is glitchy, the car doesn't save your preferred driving mode so if you want eco or sport or normal you have to select this everytime you start the car, the sound quality from the speakers is average, the other downside of the cheap dongle you get stuck with is that one of your usb is always taken up by it if you want the radio on, theres no wireless android auto so again theres another wire needed for your phone, the ride is comfortable but it is better in rival cars like Nissan or Honda or even Dacia! The heating controls are laggy and a pain to use when driving, the heated seat control is also on the screen and you can't adjust the temp of the seat like in older cars with heated seats, the rear view mirror is large and i find myself ducking sometimes to see round it, theres no front parking sensors which is odd for a new car, the rear camera works ok but i fear as the car ages the laggy entertainment system will get worse, i'll keep mine for 12months as a run around and honestly won't recommend anyone get one, the new facelift model is due to come out soon and they've not tackled any of the current model issues, i use my car for round town trips and i drive sensibly in eco mode and im getting 22mpg.. my advice is to not be fooled by the luxury look and list of gadgets, they're basic entry level gadgets and the reason the car is so much cheaper than rivals is because they've crammed it with entry level luxury, you'll get more for your money with a mid range nissan or buy a top spec used car, you're taking the same risk because from what ive experienced so far, this model isn't built to last

The auto gearbox is very jumpy, especially at slow speeds, feels like the car wants to shoot forward, even with the slightest press on the accelerator. The start/stop system is also causing a concern, when turning right the other day, it activated as I was waiting to turn right, when I pressed the accelerator, there was a good couple of seconds delay - a bit concerning especially when trying to make a quick turn in oncology traffic. I have never had issues with other automatic cars 🤷♂️ thanks for any advice 👍🏻😀

It does make you wonder what's going on regarding pricing structures etc. I recall reading an article 20+ years ago about a certain model of Rover car being £4000 cheaper in *New Zealand* than here in the UK....despite being built here in Britain. Perhaps things are different in NZ, in that they'll only pay what they feel something is worth? In which case a shiny new Allegro might have been 50p.
@nigel.w2 жыл бұрын
@@Brian-om2hh I lived in NZ for 38 years, barring a few years. Most new cars are significantly more expensive there. And I think it's much harder to find a reliable cheap car. The rise of Japanese imports made the average used car cheaper, and more reliable due to them being newer than most of the cars on the road previously. At the very bottom end of the new market, there's not that much difference between prices in NZ and the UK, but as soon as you move beyond the very bottom, the differences just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger. Premium brands are a real rip-off. And it's not down to taxes. The dealers simply have huge margins on new premium cars. As far as a certain model of Rover being £4000 cheaper in NZ than in the UK, I very much doubt it. But, twenty-odd years ago, MG-Rover was already selling hardly any cars in NZ, and by the time MG-Rover went bust, there was only one dealer left in Auckland. I suspect that if this is true, it was a promotional price to get rid. I'll also add that at that time, the average income in NZ was far lower than it was in the UK. I may as well also note that the whole car ownership experience is different. For instance, there are hardly any independent brand specialists in NZ. Generally speaking, if you buy a premium car in NZ, not only will it cost far more to buy in the first place, it will also cost far more to maintain. And Australia is much worse.
@nigel.w2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but what's the average income in the PI? And what's the Government policy towards cars? Does the Government want to encourage mobility and car ownership? Incomes, taxes, government policies, different world views, different freight costs, and different warranty lengths and terms all play a part in pricing.
