in my limited time on one of these, I was blown away by how planted it was at speed, and seemed to push you to go faster. Definitely a big bike (and I'm 6'5") but like you said, easy to throw around in the air, and surprisingly poppy. Great bike, and it pushed me to go faster and faster. The bike was never a limiting factor, it was me squeezing the brakes too much.

i feel like a huge part of a bike feeling nimble, regardless of the travel numbers, are geometry numbers. if the geo is "right", any bike should be playful in the air because that good geo gives you full control over the bike, not the other way around. i've ridden some huge bikes, like 200mm or more of travel but with old geo numbers and they feel dead, they eat up big bumps like nothing but man they're boring bikes. i've also ridden short travel bikes, namely the transition spur and it can do things i'd never even consider taking some downhill bikes on. its cool to see the bike industry evolving

@@trailreviews3628 brake jack? I ride a Dreadnought and have never experienced that.
@maffin29173 жыл бұрын
@@philn9205 the biggest difference between the range and the Dreadnought, on paper, is the very high anti-rise value of the Dreadnought Suspension. I remember teh anti-rise Being around 130% witch means that the rear Suspension compresses when you usw your rear Brake. This is nice for steep trails since your Bike is Not moving you towards the Bars when you Brake in steep Terrain. The downside of such high anti-rise values is that your rear Suspension will Lock while braking. The range in comparsion hast a very active Suspension under rear braking.
@philn92053 жыл бұрын
@@maffin2917 yes, I believe 130% at 0mm wheel travel. I think 140% or higher would be considered "very high". A properly custom tune rear shock goes a long way. My Dreadnought has a custom EXT Storia Lok3 and for me, under braking, the rear seems to have the right balance of stable chassis position and optimal suspension sensitivity. I can't recall having the sensation of less grip in the rear. I've only been riding it for a month and a half and I can tell you now, my suspension has never "Locked" while braking. But I'll keep looking for the sensation of less active suspension under heavy braking.

The linkage hanging below the bb bothers me. I'd definitely smash it on things. I'm also not convinced on the high pivot design for my trail bike. For what you ride I would definitely say no for the Norco range just because it's so long. It looks like a fun bike park bike but you started to shift towards a little bit smaller bikes to get a little bit more mobility. I like the look of it a lot and I'm sure it's a fun bike but for an everyday bike I wouldn't choose that as my first bike. I would probably go with the altitude. I have a rip-mo and it is awesome for pedaling and just a lightweight fun bike to ride. I wish it was tracking a little bit better in the rear but I'm going to adjust my compression and rebound a little bit and see if that helps. Good video

Physics question about high pivot. I have seen the deflection diagrams for both high pivot and regular rear suspension; one pivots forward, one pivots backwards. So my question is why don't they design deflection exactly in the middle? Isn't that what you really want? A perfectly vertical deflection without geometry changes? I mean, as you observed, the high pivot makes the bike feel longer, and to me that is not a good thing. But then I've never ridden a high pivot, so maybe this is not so much a matter of physics as feel. Just curious what you think, Nick, because I know you are interested in the intellectual side of MTB.
@VanCan3 жыл бұрын
Mountain bikes are pretty subjective. The “best” design is the one you like. I will say though that the bike getting longer as the suspension compresses makes it more stable.

Time to think makes you question your decision- I had chosen the Nukeproof Giga, Knolly Chilcotin or the Range. Nukeproof is annoying to try and order, so i kinda scrapped that. How does this compare to the Chilcotin?? There is literally no reviews around on them. I want a pedalable heavy hitter, that can tolerate some less extreme terrain and not feel like a bored sled. Lots of shuttles, Park, but the occasional pedal. Hopefully not TLDR ;) Keep up the good work!
