The very positive development of a coming or presented academic job offer brings with it the opportunity and need to review and consider the details of a position offer including aspects that are likely negotiable, including salary and start-up support funds and aspects that are normally not negotiable but very important to understand, including expectations for faculty work in teaching, scholarship, and service, and the tenure and/or promotion processes. Having served as faculty, search committee member, department chair, and as an advisor for graduate students entering the academy, I will discuss issues involved in understanding and negotiating the job offer process. We will discuss how this process starts during the campus visit and at the time an offer is made, the timeline guiding the process, strategies for understanding and navigating the process, and I will share a list of questions those offered a position may consider.
