I agree 100%, John! I own the PX8 and Bathys and love them both - very much! But I find myself reaching more for the Momentum IVs. They just sound soooo good!!! They were great when I first put them on, but they grow on me even more the more I listen to them. What a great value in Bluetooth headphones they represent in 2022! Great review, John!

I own this M4 for a month and having a lot of issue, I’m surprised that none of the issue even mentioned! I work along side with the construction crews indoor with a noisy environment, it cut down the noise which is great. Yes, I installed latest Sept firmware 2.9.12 right after I purchased. I wear this head set at least 8 hours a day even though I work 10 hours. The unit worked good for a week with all touch function worked. I do say the fast forward function is a miss and hit! What I meant is, there are time it won’t skip forward. It sounds great but the bugs starting to pop out: It will turn itself off if you hook up two devices from time to time; it didn’t happen before. I love the feature when you pull the right head set out off your ear, it will stop playing any song, it worked last night and now today. Last night I couldn’t turn it on, a bit of google search and solved the issue by holding down the power for 20s to reboot. The pause and double tapping (noise cancellation) worked well. The touch function can be a nightmare, it is not base on your finger touching like the touch screen off an iPhone. My hoodie will touch it and it will either be pausing or doing other weird shit, it is very irritating! When you power it on or off, it never tell you it is on or off mode; it will tell you it is connected. Here you are trying to listen if you are connected even though it is not powered on! I like the sound but the bugs are really troublesome, if you can live with all this issue then it is for you. Yes the battery life is a bonus but I don’t buy this head set base on this. Sennheiser really need to update another new firmware, I got till early next year before returning it back; meanwhile I will have to live with it!

Went through these exact models to finally end up keeping the momentum 4. This review is spot on tbh. Exceptional value at $279. Not saying XM5 or Airpod Max sucked, not at all. But the SQ and battery life are just a cut above. Lows, punchy mids, separation are all there.

I had many thoughts about to buy over-ear bluetooth headphones with ANC but could not decide between B&W PX7 S2, Sony XM5 and the Momentum 4 Wireless. Since today I own the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless in black because I got a special offer and I am really really happy with them.

The quality of the bass is very well described here. Great sound and super battery life, been using them weeks without charging. You can use the headphones while charging and connect two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. The noise cancelling is magic. No regrets, proud owner.

I own the Sennheiser Momentum 4 in black, I agree it is the best value! I tried and owned the Bose QC 45, tried the sony XM5etc. The Momentum 4 has by far the best sound quality! No other headphone has the 60-hour battery life of the Momentum 4 and the Microphone is very good for phone calls, I wish the Momentum 4 had Bose's Noice cancelling! For those watching old reviews, please know that there is an update that fixes all issues mentioned within the early reviews of the Momentum 4.

@vokso11 Do those fixed issues also include the bug of the Momentum 4 headphones automatically switching on while in the case under some circumtstances, e.g. when the case is being stored vertically inside a backpack? I am also considering getting the Sennheiser Momentum 4, but automatically switching on headphones would be kind of a deal breaker for me.

Can't afford headphones that cost as much as my home theater speakers (also Focal) but these Sennheiser's are awesome for the price point! I will admit that I am a Sennheiser headphone bigot going way back. I strayed from the brand for a few years but now I am back. I just picked these up today based on your review so thank you, thank you, thank you! I also gave the Sony's a try but for listening to music at home (ANC is optional for me) these are hand's down the better of the two. The app has its' quirks but nothing that breaks the deal. Thanks again for your review!

Merry Christmas John! Interesting, no comments “specifically” about the treble/high frequency performance of the Sennheisers? That was my first thought so I listen to your review a second time and took notes. The bass performance was described in several different ways. Layer separation, general & relative quality, Headstage/soundstage; Internal spaciousness, openness, Dynamics & micro-dynamics, that Small sounds have greater Avidity & clarity, and overall sound comparison. Yes… nothing about the high frequencies? How would you describe & compare them? I think it’s hugely important to me, because the Senn4 sound like a winner, and a bargain. Thank you!
@VeitLehmann
@VeitLehmann Жыл бұрын
To my ears, the treble is just right, there's really nothing that stands out in any negative way. Sure, they're not as airy as open-back wired headphones can be, but it surely has a lot more air than a Sony XM5 and it's much cleaner and more even there than any Bose. I can only directly compare it against the PXC 550, which is far more uneven there. From my memory, it's similar to the PX7 S2's treble. But it's not on the level of my DT 880 600 Ohms for sure. In short: Don't worry about the treble. However, I can hear some nasal resonance in the mids around 1kHz and sometimes have to dial back the mids to get rid of it. That's something almost nobody seems to observe and mention. Maybe it's just there for some people. But I can deal with it because all the other positive things Darko describes are also there and make those headphones something very special to listen to.

Nice review! I bought a M4 in the middle of Oct last year based on its massive battery capacity and sound profile, and it was comfortable when I tested it at a shop. I charged it to full and took a round trip between the east coast of the US and the Eastern Asia (30hrs), a round trip between the east coast and west coast (12lb s) and used it in the office lightly. Its battery level was 10% this morning so I finally recharged it. Impressive indeed. It does, however, create a hot spot at the top of my head (head shape dependent) and its touch control is too sensitive. I was using a neck pillow during my transatlantic flights and when I rolled my head, that activated the touch control. Lol

I almost feel like you're talking about the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 I just picked up. In terms of sound anyway. I had the Sony WF-1000XM4 before, but the Momentums just sound so much better. There is just so much information. Instruments like cymbals and drums sound so real. Almost too much to be honest, because I'm not always inclined to listen that way. But at the same time, I much rather have this than the other way around. And the bass is so good as well. Defined, without muddying up anything. Which is where the Sony's really struggled sometimes. The only real negative is that I can now hear when a recording isn't as good. So, that perhaps makes me enjoy some of my music a bit less. But at the same time, I enjoy other albums more.

Thanks so much for your really honest reviews. I am very much into headphones space probably not audiophile, to be honest not rich enough to explore the hifi speakers 😁. Have definitely found your reviews closest to what I felt about most of these products, as compared to other reviewers out there. By far the best sound that I could get on wired system is A&K Kann Alpha with balanced output to Focal Celestee. For wireless I would say with Note 20 Ultra with Atmos on, paired with Sennheiser TW 3 earbuds.

This headphones are my daily drivers for many reasons that I will list: Decent ANC Decent Ambient (not great but acceptable) The touch controls aren't frustrating Comfortable enough for my head Sound is not fatiguing to my ears I do have some complaints, even if I listed that the sound is not fatiguing I don't exactly love it, but compared to the Sony's, I can listen to them for hours, only Sony gives me ringing in my ears after listening them for 5 minutes, so, if you want to get them you will not be dissapointed, in the end is not about sound quality alone, is about comfort and convenience.

I tried, and really liked the sound of the Senheisser. I ended up sending them back because of too many firmware bugs around phone calls. They sometimes would drop if one answered on my iphone. They also had trouble releasing, even after off for hours, and would pick up calls across the room, which was irritating. Hopefully they have since fixed these issues.

I'll have to roll with you on this one. I had recently purchased the B&W PX8, and after 2 weeks of use I had to return it. For $700 it just did not ring my bell. My Senns M3 sounded so much more engaging and enjoyable to listen to. I'll be pulling the trigger on the M4 very soon. As much as I want them to be, I agree that wireless cans just cannot meet the same sonic avalon that wired cans have. It's close, but not just yet. So for my daily, out and about usage, the Senns M4 will be just fine. I'll save some coins as well. Thank s for the review.

Bought these and the Sony XM5 at the same time. The Sennheiser sounded better more open indeed and subbass was too massive almost. However, i noticed a clear skewed stereo imagine, it drove me insane;) how do i know and that my brain was not playing tricks? I played one of my own tracks and went to my DAW and isolated the sound around 9-11khz on the hihat. It was clearly more to one side. Then i adjusted the panning by 12 points away from this side and it was nicely in the middel. So, skewed stereo image and a total no go. The sony’s are way more comfy for me, but realize that is subjective. I can eq the sony enough to make it sound great. And indeed, ANC is quite better with the sony’s. In the end for me it was more important to have comfy great sounding headphones with the best anc. If i want true hifi, i have my hifi Set up, my studio and tons of headphones. True hifi on an iphone (AAc) is BS anyway:)

Ive noticed lots of companies dont have heavy emphasis on sound for their ratings. Sony is the king of ANC and thats prob what made em #1 in their eyes. They also are pretty comfortable and have a pretty good app for it too. But IMO if sound is key, and it should be, its nowhere near the top. Also IMO ANC doesn't matter as much as most think it does if you are listening to just about anything on any headphone or earbud.

Listened to the Momentum 4 and the Focal Bathys, and I'd be kidding myself if I said that the Bathys sounded better. With the ONLY exception of the M4's boosted sub-bass, which can be EQ'd on the app, the M4 sounded more natural from the upper bass up to the treble. The Bathys sounds good, for sure, but one should really enjoy laidback, blunted, relatively dull presence region to be able to call them "better" sounding.

I owned a pair of Senny Momentum Wireless some years ago (version 2, maybe?... It didn't say it was but it was a revised 2nd edition) and while they were very well built, with comfortable leather and solid metal parts, they also sounded good but there was one problem I couldn't escape - hiss. Between songs it was like listening to a sea shell. The ANC was also fairly meh, and often delayed to the point of it generating more noise when next to a busy road or on a rattly bus. Based on this review of the 4, I'll maybe take a look at what revisions have been made in the last 4 years or so!

Anyone noticed that sennheiser has updated the app and the bass is now not as punchy as it was before. I sent a report in earlier. My sound is now higher than befor however the bass still isn't as punchy as even a week ago abit disappointed and thinking of skullcandy anc2 for the bass. Hopefully sennheiser sorts this as my bass heavy music is sounding abit disappointing slightly even with the custom equaliser.

Thanks for covering this part of the ANC landscape. Hit a store (fortunately just happened to be noisy & bustling) to experience & compare the Sonys to the more balanced, articulate & comfy Senns. I like good headroom in my cans and unfortunately, the Senns capped out to max far too soon where as the Sony’s had way more volume climb. Anyway, always trade offs to consider and just another note for others who may want to factor that in to their exploration. Also, really enjoyed the recent podcast with Schiit’s Stoddard and dig the insightful interviews you’ve done on that platform.

These are not made by Sennheiser, that's why these have issues. I have owned 3 pairs since release and the 3rd pair was the best out of the 3. (not by much) These are plagued with issues mostly caused by the ANC making these sound unbalanced with air an pressure issue on one cup. Sennheiser sold there headphone division so these are only Sennheiser by name and also explains the shift away from the old design

Only downside is that it hurts my ears after a while, mainly due to my glasses. @darko, as you are also wearing glasses did you experience any discomfort at the beginning? Will it get loser overvtime? Hope it does b/c the rest is great. (Moved from the lighter bose qc35) thanks for your review!

I seem to recall a thread somewhere where the Sennheiser's are found to be qc problematic with numerous owners claiming they had to send the product back for repair/refund. It got to such a degree that AMAZON placed a box on the order page warning would-be buyers saying they encounter more product problems than other products in the category. Anyone else aware of this??

I use Crutchfield for my headphone purchases, because their customer service is outstanding. Six weeks ago, I purchased the Sony WH-1000XM4 headset and had numerous problems with it disconnecting in Zoom calls, as well as it phasing out for 1 second on Spotify after using them for 8-12 minutes. My original purchase was open box. Reporting this to Crutchfield, they shipped out a brand new pair which I received in 2 days, then put the faulty Sonys back in the same shipping box, taped on the return UPS label and sent it off. No additional charge by Crutchfield. Sadly, I had the same issues with the replacement Sonys. I called Sony and went through 2 levels of support and they offered free replacement as well, but would not ship out the replacements until they had received the pair I bought from Crutchfield. I called Crutchfield and they recommended that I could change to the Momentum 4, and since they had just gone on sale, would also receive a $30 refund in difference of cost. I already own Momentum 2s and have been sappy with them, but needed to get more bells and whistles, plus a more comfortable headband (Momentum 2 has a hard leather band with is very uncomfortable). The new Momentum 4s are due for delivery sometime today and I watched this video with great pleasure seeing that his recommendation and descriptions are far exceeding what I had hoped for.

I have the feeling that the Momentum 4 ARE the PXC 550 III. I upgraded from the original PXC 550 and I don't regret it. But if yours work, there's no need to rush, they're still very nice. If the power switch still works. Mine broke and is very unreliable now, that's why I upgraded.

They are comparable to the PX7 but PX8 are in a whole different class so it’s useless to compare them. The PX8 costs more than double the momentum 4 so that should already tell you the answer. If you have the money you should go for the PX8 otherwise momentum 4 is a great choice.

Hi John (and anyone reading this who has tried these headphones). When using the PX7 S2, did you notice any difference in sound quality (or maybe just volume) when listening to music streamed via the Bowers and Wilkins app? (A few other online people have mentioned this. Not sure if they were iOS or Android, which may make a difference. I'm personally more interested in Android experience:) And which pair would you say are better for larger ears / keeping ears cool (PX7 S2 or M4)?

Did you ever have a chance to try the Sennheiser RF 185? Do you have any recommendation on any other Hi Fi gear to pair them with? I'm looking for best value options like the Momemtum 4. Ciurrently I have 'em connected straight to my PC with a motherboard I chose because I understand it has a relatively good audio quality. I wonder if I'm leaving any potential better audio quality on the table and I don't have access to any other Hi Fi headphones or gear to compare side by side.

I just bought one since the battery life of my AKG K845bt is frustratingly short and I did want an upgrade. The very first moment I was a bit shocked by the sennheiser sound....the sound is far from what I was used to. But I did get used to that very quickly and right away I realised that this it has a much more mature sound than the AKG. The AKG soundswarmer, the Sennheiser sounds thinner in the mids which is pretty bad while listening to this video for instance, but with music you do hear much more detail etc on the Momentums. Comfort-wise I absolutely prefer the AKG though;l with my glasses, the Momentum just is a bit too tight and I don't even have a big head. I have mixed feelings but for €250 it really isn't a bad buy. One day I hope to have an Audeze LCD-X again for at home. I really regret selling that one.
