2022 SML Big & Tall 450 MX Shootout | What's The BEST Bike For A Big Guy?

Earlier this month, we published our 2022 450 MX Shootout. When setting up a bike during pre-production testing, manufacturers have a target weight range for potential consumers, as it is impossible to produce a bike that will be perfect for everyone. On a 450cc motocross bike, the target weight range that manufacturers aim for is 175 to 185 pounds. We know that a lot of riders who purchase a 450 MX bike are vets who may tip the scales on the heavier side, so we decided to conduct a mini shootout of sorts to see if the bikes stack up differently for a rider who is on the larger and taller side, enjoy!

Great stuff. Love that you do these videos. I have settled that I am always going to have to pay to respring and revalue suspension but it is cool to see what ergos and bikes just work better for us big guys.

Don thanks a bunch for this. 6’3 and 260 put me in this class of riders I value this shoot out a bunch. I’ve always had to install heavier springs a tall seat and pro taper windham bend bars that’s been my go too for years riding Yamaha and with these improvements I really love how I feel on the bike

As the years and beers add up I can definitely see myself joining the vaunted XXL “Clydesdale class.” And, as inflation continues to run away, I can definitely see myself picking up one of these bikes used so I really appreciate the perspective this shootout brings! 🍺🍔🍟🍦✊ Hail to the hefties!

Thanks for thinking of the taller bigger guys. I have 2018.5 factory edition ktm with mtech spring forks and national rear shock with twisted maps and fmf full system. Nice bike but honestly I've always felt more comfortable with my 2018 450sxf. Took me alot of testing to get the newer chassis where's it at now. My son has kawasaki 2019 with mxtech suspension set up for him. He's 6 foot too but lighter. I've always like the kawasaki. Find it easier to stand up on around corners and in ruts. Doesn't have the ktm power but not bad. The kawasaki always has seemed to hook up better in the acceleration bumps. In market for new bike and excited to see what 2023 bikes are. Almost picked up a 23 ktm 2 days ago but figured I'd see what kawasaki and Yamaha releases

My brother-in-law has a strong dirt bike background but is currently probably about 300, and about 6'4". He still has an interest but probably feels he's just too big. I share these shootouts with him in hopes of motivating him.
