I have the '22 Outback Onyx Edition XT and the big difference between the two is luxury vs ruggedness. The Wilderness, having the lower final drive ratio (which is off-road focused) and the off-road ready Geolander tires, is going to be louder and less refined on highways (tire noise and engine noise are more noticeable in the Wilderness at hwy spds) and during most any sporty, paved-road endeavors. The Onyx XT is, on the otherhand, a smooth and quiet experience at 80+mph hwy and smooth and supple over rough city/dirt roads, and in general more refined. But while the XT can go where most mid-size SUV's can go, the Wilderness will go even further and over rougher, ragged terrain. So it comes down more to lifestyle than anything else. Which is more important to you, luxury ride with serious off road chops? Or serious off road chops that means a rougher, louder less refined ride on pavement? It's all about where you need to go and how you want to get there.
@boxsterman77 Жыл бұрын

@randthompson57163 жыл бұрын
I ordered a new car in May. I passed on the Wilderness mainly due to the final drive ratio & fuel consumption. In my case, its not justifiable. I do have to do off road, but my current Premium is more than adequate for my needs. The Onyx bump in hp will take care of any slight shortcomings. The big thing is they are both on the global architecture, its such a major difference over Gen5 imo. Like the salespeople say "there's a butt for every seat". Mine in the Onyx. Thx for the very well done vid 👍
@SM-McKraken2 жыл бұрын
Beyond the difference in drive ratio and fuel economy, the performance diff is noticeable. As is the luxury aspect. The Onyx XT will be more refined on pavement, especially highways, and the XT's extra HP is quite noticeable in passing and other sporting endeavors. The Wilderness is a more rugged beast, and it's lower final drive ratio and Geolander tires means a louder highway experience due to engine noise and tire noise. For all their simularities they are actually suited to two very different drivers. And that's actually pretty cool.
@matthewwain9958 Жыл бұрын
@@SM-McKraken I can say that the road noise isn't even a concern on a wilderness. It is super comfortable, takes rough road well, and is still excellent on the highway for long trips. I've been incredibly impressed with it. Minor niggles I have are thing like the rough re-starting with the engine auto-off/on feature, and that you can't seem to turn off the fake gearing. Other than that, it's a solid car tbh.

Retired and moved off gravel+long driveway. Drive few miles annually now. I think upgrade 2016 Outback to Wilderness in several years. Economy not notable at 4,000 miles per year, but the extra get up and quickly go due to gearing change will be definitely noticeable. Standard XT is powerful, but takes awhile to really kick in and go, I was a little disappointed in that. Only the geyser blue with all that black trim for me. I wait and see if they offer upgraded stereo and heated steering wheel. You’d think for "outdoorsy" they’d have heated steering wheel standard already.

I love the idea of the Wilderness as alternative to a body on frame SUV for those who want just a bit more capability than a standard Outback but who don't want to make all of the on-road sacrifices of a body on frame SUV like a 4Runner. That said, what's an example of a situation where someone would really benefit from the additional .8" of clearance and the slightly revised final drive but wouldn't need the increased articulation and 4 Low on a truck-based SUV? In my mind these situations would be exceedingly rare. The standard Onyx XT (or Outdoors in Canada) should be able to do nearly everything the Wilderness can, and for those trickier situations where the Wilderness is really necessary, you can either pick a different line, or you should be using a truck. I'm torn because while I like the idea of the Wilderness, I think it needs to add a 4 Low and a locking-diff to be truly a step up on capability.

Wilderness for looks, Onyx for functionality. You're still going to need to upgrade the skid plate with the Wilderness, may as well get an Onyx and have less bolts to remove. The Wilderness just doesn't have anything that a little bit of aftermarket upgrades can't fix on an Onyx.
@johnkkkj5 ай бұрын
You are discounting the final drive ratio is different, in addition the shocks are much more beefy. The roof rails hold 700 pounds! Eyesite is adjusted for the increased height. So no you can't make an Onyx a Wilderness you can make some changes but what the hell are you going to do with the roof? What about the low end gearing made for crawling what about that? And to top if off you are going to get new rims just to put the all terrain tires that come as standard. You can't get the same colors on the Onyx. The cladding is different, and how about that anti glare hood. Comes with skid plates, yes after market is better but still extra expense. the seats have a different material for easy cleaning feels like leather but it's not. In short you will spend a lot of money and not get close to what the Wilderness is, and what is next? Go and get the Wilderness badge and put it on the Onyx? Why spend more money? And still not get a Wilderness!
@johnkkkj5 ай бұрын
@@BlueOvals24 Dude the final drive minimal difference makes the Wilderness not only more off road capable but the Zero to 60 is faster. What you are saying makes no sense! What you want to do will be much more expensive than the Wilderness and dare I say it will not be as good. But go head spend the extra money and make the Onyx a Wilderness this is just daydreaming nonsense. Why not just get a Wilderness from the getgo and save money and have the final gearing. You are too dismissive of everything the Wilderness is that the Onyx is not. Your entire argument is born of fantasy if you think you are going to get a cheaper Wilderness from an Onyx. You sound like you have buyers remorse and now dismissing everything about the Wilderness, and spending more money to try to equal it. @@BlueOvals24 I think the Onyx or any Subaru for that matter are great cars. I just think that if you want the Wilderness type than it is wiser just to get the damn thing instead of paying more after market parts and spend more than you would if you get the Wilderness. Some things you just can't do, and if it doable it is going to be very costly. Like how the hell are you going to have 700lb static roof loading capacity what are you going to do weld your car? What about approach and departure angles? Are you going to hacksaw your Onyx?? What about the wheels and tires, your going to ditch them and put on the 17" and get the Geolanders? How much is going to cost you? And don't forget two more things, you need to give it a lift, have the eyesite readjusted as well. So please tell me where we are on price now? The final drive ratio not only gets you better crawling but also gets you faster 0-60. Cobb used to make a device that you could just plug into the ECU and make these changes. If you are going to do anything check with COBB Tuning . com I can vouch for them. But don't know if they are still doing the accessport for the outbacks. check with them it is possible to get the final drive ratio if, big if the CVT is not different in the Wilderness. I don't know this info you need to ask around, however if it is just a new mapping possibly you can get the same final ratio with an ECU flash. Just know you are kissing your MPG goodbye! The one thing we are in complete agree on is after market skid plates are simply better. That I give you and I plan on going this rout myself. But to take an Onyx and just do all these mods on it thinking it is cheaper, and in the end it is not quite the same thing. Just dismissing everything Subaru did or run to get mods just to say aha is not serving you well. The Onyx was the jewel in your eye, let it stay that way. It's a fine ride. Doing all these mods is not going to be cheaper trust me I modified the poop out of a Forester XT even hat the stock STI mufflers on it at on point. This is a money pit! Also don't forget your warranty you keep messing with stuff you might be on the bad end of things. This is a risk you should consider. We are both in the Subie family in the end.

Yeah the touring is pretty much fully loaded and when you add basically a sunroof package option to the Wilderness they are pretty close in price with the Wilderness being about $800 dollars more. Basically the only major differences are that the Touring will have leather vs the water resistant material in the Wilderness, Touring has ventilated seats and not available in Wilderness, Wilderness has taller springs which gives it a better ride and off the beaten path but not so great vs the Touring, Wildernes will have a skid plate as standard and lastly the Wilderness will have air powerful engine with different gearing but mpg will be sacrificed. You can although get the Touring with a turbo but that will jack the price to about the mid 40's.

It would be nice to have the better roof rack, extra clearance and better approach and departure angles and the gunmetal gray interior trim, but the copper trim is garish as is the excessive cladding and the star figure lights look cheesy as does the Wilderness badging. And the piano black trim needs to go in both.

Absolute;y agree. The Wilderness looks uncomfortable in its own skin, as if it were designed with a crayon by a teenager. The Onyx XT has a beautiful and graceful look, which is much more sticking when viewed in person. The Wilderness, when viewed in person, retains its "designed with a crayon" look. The interior of the Wilderness looks drab and dull, with the copper accents coming from the same crayon wielding teenager, while the Onyx XT has contrasts which are very comforting and pleasing. If you are going to take a vehicle off roading over rocks, get a Jeep. Or better yet, get a horse. If you are going off roading on Forest Service, gravel or dirt roads, get an Onyx.

I've seen a few other videos and they mentioned the 700 lbs is strictly for nonmovement. I believe it has a 200 lb capacity while moving. So if you drive this vehicle how Subaru advertised it and you put the slightest scuff on a skid plate Subaru will not honor there driveline warranty!!! 2020 outback transmission full of metal shavings no warranty!!! Under 20000kms. Just warning everyone so they don't have to go through the nightmare Subaru is putting us thru 😭. We were a loyal Subaru family 2 STI's and a WRX.

I think the best Subaru Outback value is the base model. Those XT models at nearly 40 K don't justify the price I think.
@roberthenry93193 жыл бұрын
Drive an XT model and see how you feel about how valuable the extra power is. The power boost can be a real game changer when you need it driving on a highway. Granted, you do not need all that power in town, but it can get you out of a jam when passing a semi on the open road.

$40k is just not realistic, who’s buying these? At 26mpg the 4Runner just needs to lose weight(or get a turbo 4) and it’s no contest.

But, the 4 Runner has not lost weight and does not have a turbo. If it did, it would cost way more than $40 thousand. So, your point is???????????

I just bought a suburb wilderness. My first Subaru ever. The heater never shuts off and the dealer said that is “just the way it is”. My first and last Subaru I will ever buy. Going to get rid of this as soon as I can. I would not recommend a Subaru as the company does not seem to care.

@roberthenry93193 жыл бұрын
Not an infomed comment. Clearly you have not driven the Onyx XT CVT. It makes automatic transmission feel obsolete. Absolutely no searching for gears with Subaru's CVT vs. geared automatic. Most automatics have a littile hesitation both going up from 3 to 4 and down from 3 to 2. No hesitation in the Subaru XT. Just power going up and smooth transition in slowing with use of paddle shifters on the way down. It is Nissan's CVT that is jerky and cumbersome.
@darnellwatkins40313 жыл бұрын
Obviously, you don’t go off roading. Good luck, bub! Thanks for the CVT lesson!
@SecretSauceyjuice2 жыл бұрын
@@darnellwatkins4031 The high output CVT from Subaru is a completely different unit from the one that comes in all the n/a base models. It's more robust, tuned better, and makes better use of the greater torque. It's not a low range by a long shot, but the shorter final drive on the Wilderness does give it an advantage.
