I just replaced my 2016 3.6R Outback with a 2020 Touring XT. What a huge difference in ride quality and road noise. There were some exterior items I didn’t care for (e.g. chrome roof racks and side mirrors,) but those things have been mitigated with replacement parts. I even changed out the grille for the Onyx version. If you’ve been thinking of buying a Subaru, stop by your dealer and test drive one.
@tpolerex72825 жыл бұрын
Keith Walls that’s funny, I actually prefer the bits of painted silver trim on the racks to lessen a bit all that black cladding and on the mirrors and door handles as a bit of “jewelry” on an otherwise handsome but not stunning looking car but that’s just a personal preference. Haven’t driven one yet but sat in one for a bit last week and man that Touring interior is sumptuous for a Subie. We are on the slow track to replace our 2006 Tribeca with a Touring XT but will probably wait until next year when they’ve hopefully ironed out any issues that one could expect from a new car. Have you found the power and handling to be good for the type of car it is and any issues (or perks) with anything else that you’ve discovered as you’ve had it for a bit? As someone who is already used to a CVT (I’ve driven the Ascent but otherwise have very little experience) have you found it to be responsive and a good fit for the engine? Thanks!
@keithwalls63165 жыл бұрын
Tpolerex I’ve had it since Sept. 30th, so not a real long time. Estimated 0-60 is 6.6 secs (Car and Driver.) I have not tested it yet because it just finished its break in period. As I said, it’s heads and shoulders above the old 6 cylinder. You owe it to yourself to go check it out at your favorite Subaru dealer. It handles really well, I have no issue with the CVT ( I didn’t with old one either.). Since this is the same engine as in the Ascent, it has better pickup since the vehicle is lighter. It’s no sports car, but for a “lifted wagon,” it’s pretty darned nice. Full disclosure- I replaced the OE Yokohama tires (which Yokohama doesn’t even sell in this size at tire dealers) and replaced them with Michelin Premier A/S tires.
@tpolerex72825 жыл бұрын
Keith Walls cool, thanks! Yeah everything I’ve heard is that the OEM tires pretty much suck which is often the case with mfgr’s choices, I bet it makes a noticeable difference. Once that engine loosens up a bit you’ll see some even better performance- also, the learning algorithm with the transmission would be more responsive if “you drive it like you stole it” for a bit after you’ve broken in the engine, grabbing a couple of downshifts with the paddle shifters even in normal mode. What color did you get? I actually like this Subaru White, nice bit of metallic in it. Glad you are liking your ride! Thanks!

Very nice presentation on the Subaru Onyx, Joe. Obviously, there is a uniquely marvelous product to work with in the Subaru Onyx XT. However, if you were presenting a 1957 DeSoto, you would do it just as well. Your heart and mind are in your work, and we (your subscribers) are loyal and grateful not just for the technical aspects of your videos, but so much more importantly for the comfort which you give to us. You, in reality, are presenting us with a gentle and powerful humanity. This is something you may not even realize, but your subscribers get it. Switching our thoughts from the news, work and stresses of the day to viewing Raiti's Rides is soothing, fun and peacefully entertaining. When you tell us which nook or cranny to place our Reese's peanut butter cups into, it makes us feel good (We know you do not eat junk food, but that's not the point. Many of us don't, either. It is kind of a comfy cuddle.) Please keep sharing your thoughts with us. We, your subscribers, are better for it. What you do has powerful impact far beyond the fun and interesting information. This is something your subscribers understand- even those who verbalize disagreement about your conclusions. The technical things are fun. It is you who we need. Not everyone always agreed with Garrison Keillor or Paul Harvey. But "A Prairie Home Companion" and :The Rest of the Story" were hugely important comforts in millions of American's lives. So it is with Raiti's rides. Thank you, Joe. Robert Henry, M.D.

My wife turned it down. She was thinking of trading her ForesterXT but didn't see enough to make her want a new one. Interior seems pretty much the same as my 2016 Outback other than the the big screen. When you open the back door, it sure seems smaller than the Forester although on paper is supposed to be bigger. They put the Crosstrek taillights on the back but the only real improvement that I noticed was a lot less body roll on sharp curves. As for power, she said it seemed close to her ForesterXT but not faster.

Ricardo Juliet An hour after watching this review I test drove an XT Limited (no Onyx XT in stock). The engine performance was very strong, with a wide power spread. I was really surprised! It was also the first CVT I ever drove, and it never did anything to draw my attention...it was quite seamless. I REALLY liked the angle-adjustable headrests, a massive upgrade from ones that are fixed at a forward angle and become a massive pain in the neck on long drives! Another nice feature: the salesman said the Onyx XT has a full-size spare tire with an alloy rim matching what's on that car. How cool is that? The 18.5 gallon fuel tank is generous, too. A really really nice car, it has me thinking...

I purchased a new Outback in 2017. It had RAB and many other electrical problems from the start. I had it in the shop 10 times for repair. Went a total of 42 days without my car. It was a Lemon. Had to have it towed into the dealer no less than four times. Even the district service manager told me to contact Subaru Customer service to get a full refund, as they could not figure out what is wrong with the car. After months of being given the run around, Subaru customer service did not refund my money as they should have. I traded my car in, still under warranty, still not fixed. I lost over $14,000 because Subaru does not stand behind their cars. Toyota is looking better all the time.

Completely agree regarding the steering feedback on the Outback in both the previous gen (2017) and the current gen (2020+). They are really tight cars for being a lifted wagon. I purchased a new Outback , it had RAB and many electrical problems from the start. After only a couple of months I had the car in the deanship for repairs several times. The dealer only deleted the PC history, did nothing to fix the problem, and does not supply the needed paperwork to prove I was there. This practice is still going on today. The service tech brags, "as long as I work here, no one will ever qualify for Lemon Law protection " Problems got MUCH worse. Full engine shut down, In for repair 10 + times, towed in 4 times. After contacting Subaru customers support, they said because the dealer refused to supply paperwork for your visits, they refused to refund my money for the Lemon the sold me. Car was traded in, because it would not work, still under warranty, still not fixed because they didn't know how to fix it. Lost well over $14,000 because Subaru does not stand behind their cars, or the customer. This is where Subaru will respond asking me to contact them, have Many Many times, they will not call back, will not follow the law.

I would use it as a daily for myself and a 60 lb. obedient Belgian Malinois to commute to my veterinary clinic. I like to go camping, hiking, ski and would like to explore more off-road, not rock crawling. I live in hot AZ and have been exploring northern Arizona to enjoy the cooler climate. I have a wife, son & dog that would join me. I was thinking Outback XT Onyx or Forester. Possibly looking at an RDX A-spec. Love this car/wagon.... but when you rev it up it sounds so lame... like a sewing machine. And you are 1000 percent correct.. it needs ventilated seats - especially here in Florida.

Your rt & I have a 5th gen outback limited the cvt sucks & I would definitely not upgrade for another outback or forester with the cvt

I couldn’t go with a turbo engine. So the only Subaru I would consider or other wagon is the 2014 Outback with the 3.6 and the 5 speed auto or the 2014 Honda Accord Crosstour. I want more cargo capacity without the SUV stupidity.

Why on the ONYX XT on the SUBARU OUTBACK not blacked out and some are blacked out why is that, Joe?

1994 isn't that when the SUBARU OUTBACK was the SUBARU LEGACY?

Joe, I have 2 questions. I have been reading reviews on Subaru’s 2005 (?) turbo charged engine and they have not been very popular. Is their new turbo charged engine any better? Second in your opinion what (if any) are the benifts of the push button ignition vs. keyed?

Great video with good info! If you could do a 2020 White Legacy Sport that would be awesome!
