Just traded in my 4Runner in one of these. I love mine. The CVT feels like a normal transmission, the turbo has little to no lag, and overall the outback has a sporty feel, with more cargo area than most SUVs. Great compromise for those that don’t need an off-roader for everyday.

Traded in my TRD Tacoma for a used GX470 a few years ago and that vehicle just blew a head gasket and I'm looking for the next thing. Really considering switching to Subaru from the Toyota universe myself. I'm just a guy who wants to get to cool campsites, I don't care about offroading as a hobby itself and the value Subaru is offering in the current market is kind of nuts.

Many dislikes of CVTs posted everywhere. We are on our 4th Subaru CVT and zero failures. Only have done some deep snow plowing and fun ditch hopping. The Outback 2011 1st Gen CVT I thought stunk for no feeling of virtual gears, was very rubber-bandy, droning up and down all the time. The next gen I’ve liked much better and saves about 4 mpg’s or more, over the older Subarus we had with their 4 speed auto. That savings adds up over time.

I kinda think the same way. If they’ll were that bad, they’d be out of business. I’m sure like all mechanical things they have failures especially at the beginning but with time, you’d think these CVT makers would make them better and more reliable or they too would be out of business.

I perhaps legitimately have heard some Nissan CVTs have had issues ?? If so, what % ? Might be very small. So much of troubles go in cycles. I recall first overdrive automatics of multiple manufacturers were a mess, at one time, I think 89 Chrysler Corp new minivans didn’t want to drive themselves off the car delivery trucks. We had 88 Dodge minivan, the last year without overdrive, it’s tranny lasted until whole thing wore out, 200,000. But that was 3.0L Mitsubishi motor with valve guide issues and burning oil, we paid after warranty $500 to fix those. Early-mid-80’s GM went to pot. A 4 cyl front wheel drive Olds and a 4 popper Pontiac both had (during brutal) cold weather o-ring issues in power steering. It would basically momentarily lock up while trying to turn. I’m still surprised no class action LAW SUIT and recall for maybe million+ of those cars, that problem went on for several years. Their headliners would fall on our heads, also. Early fuel injection GM stunk, ‘’throttle body", some flooding when below zero, drag or to heated garage and warm up, change polluted oil, or they would scream-idle at 30 mph and no changing that until it detected some engine warmth. And the grand finale of all lemons of lemons I’ve owned, and was brand spanking new !! 1988 F-150 4x4, 302 V8. A new nasty problem about every 6 weeks, alignments, brakes, leaks, gas tank sender, and a second entire engine block, all in one year and 14,000 miles. The 2nd engine also used oil. Good lord, I’ve not been able to sign my name to title of another Ford since. Prior, all my used Fords were disappointing, but all were mostly used up. Brand new F-150 and a lemon really burned. The dealer offered no basic loaner for over night work, either, which was too often. I stomped walked very hot under collar 5 whole miles to work several times, and "rented a wreck" for $14/day out of my pocket other times. That thing a true POS !! Best used car was ginormous, last of the big-bigs, 1976 Olds Delta 88 4 door hardtop with ginormous 455 V8. Hydromatic turbo-400 automatic was rock solid, i gave it to relatives at 150,000, it went to 300,000 and still ran fine, leaked nothing, used no oil. It just got rusty and people bored of driving it. And such a long wheelbase and "sprung just right", could drive it over the very worst worn out rough roads and not feel the bumps. Mushy corners yes, but corners are 10% of the driving time. I love a smooth comfy ride and that is getting very hard to find. Maybe Buick or Lincoln. I think even Cadillac has been tuned for faster corners. Not interested. "The ONE” of all I regret not keeping to 300,000 is 2009 Camry XLE 4 popper. It was perfection for 80,000 and I traded. Very smooth and comfy, easy 32 to 35 mpg’s. Concentrated light foot easy driving, over 39 mpg’s for one 200 mile trip. Plenty of power as long as under 80, who needs more? Great stereo in top XLE trim. Pretty red. It’s "the ONE" I shoulda milked out for 20 years. And was not exciting. Just excellent at everything. Flirted with a 2003 VW Jetta diesel, 5 speed. Ez average 48 mpg’s, turbo had enough oomph. Excellent Monsoon stereo !!, extremely comfortable seats and a good ride. Bit tight legroom. Started fine at 18 below zero. It rode too low to ground, 4 1/2" ?? I hit road shrapnel, put hole in oil pan. I liked it a lot, filled its tank up every 3 1/2 weeks of longer drives, felt "smugly superior" when passing the gas stations with big 4x4 guzzlers lined up refueling so often. Diesel depreciation at that time was insanely low. I was not sure if I wanted possible reliability issues after 100,000 miles…. Now a 16 Outback. Nothing exciting. It’s quite a good appliance. Love high road shrapnel clearance, excellent winter deep snow go, easy height to step out of. Extreme safety. It’s "Eyesight" is massively wonderful, like subtracting 20 years off my age. Main gripe is the worst bumps hit old spine harsher than preferred. Get old and one likes to be coddled in transit. It’s a little motor noisy too, when stomped on. Not as refined as wife’s 21 Outback Touring. That one is rather impressing me. Suubies with extra drag of 2nd differential always consume a little more petrol, but when slippery roads, can nail it pretty good and just go, don’t have to think about pushing any button or anything. Not just one wheel spinning for traction, what a drag after years of driving a Subaru. For 6" or 8" snowfalls, I like to turn the traction nanny OFF and rip around town, dig in the corners, have the rear end kick out a bit. Makes winter roads more fun. Traction nanny is a drag, literally, in deeper snow. Cuts power, brakes a wheel. Turn her off and all wheels dig in and go like a 1990’s Subaru. But does not stop any faster. The VDC very important to have on. Keeps the car from spinning out with all 4 wheels driving and not one just "tracking". Pre-VDC days and on frost or ice, Subarus were "twitchy", wanted to dance around a bit, and my knuckles were a little white. One did 360 spin out on me once at 59 mph. Luckily I ended up in same lane, same direction, didn’t stop, slowest was 45 mph while flying backward a moment. Hit gas, back to 59 and my hands shook at work for several hours after. During the spin, when sliding sideways at 50-some mph watching the weeds in ditch fly by, hoping to not catch good traction and roll, I thought "Will never again think 59 mph is slow". Sorry. Too many words, love of cars got me thinking, remembering. Oooh, Also, mid-late 60’s MOPARS usually had a little leak, or a little oil consumption. Maybe hard start below zero or way hot. Tinnier bodies than competition, but ALL of their drivetrains from Slant 6 to 340 4 barrel, excellent small block!!, to 383 and 440 4 barrels, man, the power they had and could take a beating for 200,000 miles. (Never a chance to drive their legendary 426 Hemi…). I recall one fella with a 64 Chrysler New Yorker, 413 four barrel, push button automatic. He would floor it in reverse, get wheels spinning and hot, and leave his foot to the floor, push "Drive" button, and a massive laying of rubber burn out. He never shelled out that tranny, amazingly !! Do that to a modern one with plastic parts and it would rupture dead right away. (Unless modern computers prevent abuse). Bye.

Saying the Subaru CVT is the best CVT is like saying the GL model was the best Yugo. CVTs are fine for VERY mild off roading like what you were doing. I really wish Subaru would get away from the CVT transmissions for the more off road oriented models. They over heat too easily and are not as reliable as a normal automatic or manual transmission when off roading. Granted, a stock Subaru is not going to take on the Rubicon trail, but trail conditions can change depending on the weather. A true low range(not just a small 8% gearing change) would probably really help a CVT do a lot better.

Yes. I love my Subie, but really they are primarily road cars that do pretty well off road, for a road car. I have not driven the Wilderness and I am sure it is at least a mild upgrade, much better than a CRV, Rav4, etc, but it is really not a 4WD drive like a 4runner, Rubicon, etc. But perfect for what I need - a good road car I can drive down a very rough dirt road or even the occasional not too bad dirt track to get to a trailhead, fishing stream, camping spot. I am not going to spend all day seeing exactly how hard I can push it and winch it out when I get stuck!

@@EverydayReviews2022 My cousin has a 2018 outback and I drove it once, i like the smooth shifting. I am not worrying about how it drives, I just don't know how reliable the CVT is. I know some people who had CVT problems in the past. One of my coworker had his outback CVT replaced at 50k miles.
@EverydayReviews20223 жыл бұрын
@@Pccpy Outback was redesigned in 2020. I can’t speak about reliability of the CVT but I can say I had to double check on what tranny it had in it because it did not feel like a CVT. People always talk about CVTs being unreliable yet I personally don’t know anyone that has any issues with theirs. As with anything, things get better with every generation so I’m sure that iver the years if using them, theyve gotten better for sure.

@@EverydayReviews2022 The wilderness is everything I have hoped for since 2013. Higher than regular outback, turbo, and pre-designed rails for roof top tent. I think it's a well designed vehicle. I just need to test one out this weekend.

I’m in the overlanding scene and personally know about 30 people with failed CVTs. Offroad a CVT and they will eventually fail. How many people I know that had there automatic transmissions fail? ZERO! I’m sure it’ll happen eventually, but When I’m seeing blown up toyota rear differentials, radiators, ABS modules, fuel pumps and not seeing a single A/T fail, somethings up. By the way, the 40% grade got me excited, but that equates to a 21 degree climb. Haha! I swear… my 2015 Forester XT has conquered 21 degree climbs before 🤣.

how does it have shorter gearing when its a CVT?

Final drive ratio is lower for more low end torque. Front and rear differentials are lower gear ratio. They are borrowed from the Ascent.

its well thought out and has some great improvements...other than the plastic bumpers...those are a big miss. Your review is spot on! Thank you.

What is the fording depth of this outback. On several adventures with my outback I turned back at river crossing due to concern with flooding my differentials. As well as flooding the engine. I was 300 miles out of town and could not risk it.
@EverydayReviews20223 жыл бұрын
I’m actually not sure. Don’t have that info but we were told that up to the licence plate was fine. I don’t recommend submerging as deep as you see in the pic. The driver here was a little over anxious and went in much to fast creating the mini tidal wave over the hood. Lucky it didn’t have any effect on the mechanicals. I would t risk it in your case either especially if you don’t know how deep it is. The course I was driving had been previously scouted. It’s still really impressive though.

Crosstrek with this and a bigger motor will be sweet....make sure you do Both Subaru
@Noah_E3 жыл бұрын
The Crosstrek Sport has a more powerful 2.5L engine with 182 HP and 176 lb-ft of torque vs 152 HP, 145 lb-ft with the base 2.0L engine and it gets essentially the same MPG (27/34/30 and (28/33/30). Why anyone would buy the smaller, less powerful engine when it isn't more efficient is beyond me.
@thekar35773 жыл бұрын
Exactly, why it should be the new base engine. Then have the 260 hp turbo engine option available ....but people have wanted that for years in the crosstrek and Subaru knows it.
@mandingo94712 жыл бұрын
Terrible demonstration of how to drive in water. You’re supposed to go in slowly then speed up slowly to create a bow effect. What you did could have drowned your engine. Sure, it looks cool for videos and social media but you’re irresponsibly showing people what not to do.
