Just got a 2022 4Runner sr5 myself in the nautical blue color. Dont care if it’s outdated. I love the simplicity of this truck and know that is capable of lasting several hundred thousand miles. I have an older 97 4Runner with 485,600 miles on it and still runs great with no issues. Plan to keep that till it dies. These are sturdy, ultra reliable trucks!!

Same. With so many other family suv vehicles in the market with better technology the 4runner is still the best practical 4x4 to hve if you plan on keeping it till the wheels fall off.

I own a small dealership, and while I've never owned a vehicle (always just drive a demo), I think this video has convinced me to buy one of these for personal use. I've sold a few over the years, but don't normally stock them due to cost and it's niche market. However, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on one of these in the fall and make it last me my lifetime.

Yes yes yes.. after years dealing with a row of buttons for the heater modes and fan speeds on my previous vehicle, it's SO SO nice to see big KNOBS to turn with gloves on , on my 4Runner. A little old school is certainly welcome in some areas ! Nice vid Brian :- )

I just bought my 2022 Toyota 4 Runner SR5 Premium with 3rd row seats, I enjoy driving it! I have the sunroof slide and tilt. I enjoy using my Standard Shift and the shift stick, it is amazing! Yes, it is worth it to own the 4 Runner SR5 Premium! I don't intend to go off roading I did that a few times with my previous LR2 Land Rover, been there done that! My dog loves his back seat window that slides up and down. My daughter loves reclining in the 4 Runner's 2nd row seats as she makes you tube, tik tok videos or chatting with her friends. This vehicle is by far my favorite! I have yet to take my SUV to the ski terrains..

I just, after 22 years of not owning one, purchased a new 2023 4Runner SR5 Premium, and I love it! I traded in a 2016 Land Rover LR4 which I also loved but didn't trust and couldn't depend on as I was always sitting on pins & needles waiting for a multitude of warnings to pop up telling me it's "broken"! With the 4Runner, just like with my 2017 Tacoma TRD Offroad, I just get in and go! I was going to get a Limited model but didn't like the full time 4WD system, 20-inch wheels/tires, and more complicated suspension. For more serious off-roading, I'll take the Tacoma! I LOVE the "old school" style, systems, and trucky feel of my new baby!!

I got the SR5. I've had a 4x4 sense i was 16 years and and this is the best 4x4 system I've had. it's so much of a 4x4 I didn't really need the off road or the pro. it goes with a good set of tires , the atrac is grate , as long as your not professional rock climbing or go 4x4 ing with street tires the SR5 is a beast ..

Great review, simplistic and honest. I just bought a used 2019 SR5 4x4, one owner with all service records... 57000 miles and everything feels new. Had a 2015 Tacoma, this is much better. I'm 6'2 and very comfortable in this, Thanks again for such a great review.

One selling point worth mentioning is- the roof rack . It will hold large items like mattresses, canoes, christmas trees etc. and really adds to the utility factor of the 4 runner. Alot of SUV's these days dont have roof racks anymore......cost cutting?
@brianruperti
@brianruperti 2 жыл бұрын
Good point. Possibly cost cut but manufactures may also add extra packages/accessories to increase gross on the much smaller inventory they have. So not sure why one would stock SUVs without them. We have been seeing them PLENTIFUL on our Highlanders, RAV4s and 4Runners 🙂

New subscriber here…you do a very nice job on these reviews. I commented LY (and recently updated that comment) on your Tacoma review. I have a 2019 Tacoma and have put well over 200k miles on it in 4 years. I bought my wife a 4 Runner Feb 2022. I bought her the 2022 4 Runner TRD Pro in the Lime Rush color. We are now empty nesters; the last car my wife had - that wasn’t a kid hauler was 25 years ago ; that was a 7 Series BMW. She could have picked any car she wanted- within reason (under 120k was the budget). She wanted a vehicle that she could use on our horse farm and one that had genuine 4WD capabilities. It came down to a Range Rover, Ram Power Wagon and the Lime Rush 4Runner. She decided on the 4 Runner and almost a year later….she absolutely loves the car. The size is perfect, the 4WD capability is as expected and the on road comfort is better than expected. I drive it occasionally, and compared to my Tacoma it drives nicer and is more comfortable as well. We added KO2 tires, as I add those to all of our SUVs, trucks. I hate that Toyota is going to go to the 4 CYLINDER Turbo on both the Tacoma and 4 Runner. I understand The gas mileage is not good on either and her 4Runner is horrible, as it averages around 16MPG ( my Tacoma averages around 20). However the additional 15-20% increase in fuel economy from a turbo, isn’t a good trade off from the reliability of the 4Runner system or to a lesser degree the Tacoma. The 4Runner is in my opinion the best vehicle in the Toyota line up and perhaps the best value of any vehicle in production , at least for our needs.

Excellent in-depth overview video, thanks! Per your question: I've been the most satisfied with the Weathertech in-channel rain guards. Tried the stick-on before and didn't care for how they looked or worked. Switched to the in-channel, which I've had on two Tundras and now my 2023 4Runner, and I'm much happier with the fit, function, and look.

Well done in depth video. My wife and I almost bought another 4runner, but she wanted the blind spot monitors, and the safety system, thus us getting a highlander. I absolutely love this 4runner, it's a classic. I pray they don't take the shifter out. To me it loses that truck feel IMO. In a perfect world the wife would have a 4runner and of course me keeping my Tacoma. Curious if the limited has blind spot monitors? Well done my friend, your knowledge is very impressive!

Back in the eary 80's, a dealer named Jack Safro called up fellow Wisconsin manufacturer, Winnebego,, and told them he had a ton of these pickups. Is there any way that you could put a top and seats in it? They said, "we're winnebego, thats what we do." So Safro started to send a bunch of Toyota pickups to Winnebego, and they put a top on it and some seats in the back. Over time, Toyota japan was starting to notice the sales of these Trekkers. A certain Akio Toyoda was so curious, he made a trip to just outside of Milwaukee to see the creation that Safro and Winnebego had created. Safro was selling 30 of these a year, and Toyoda was intrigued. His trip ended back in Tokyo with him demanding that a vehicle of this stature is made. The Toyota Trekker aka Toyota 4Runner was born! While the Chicken Tax may have been a factor, the 4Runner traces its roots to a Toyota dealer in Wisconsin named Jack Safro. As Donut Media tells it, in 1980 Safro thought the hot-selling Toyota Hilux pickup truck would be even more beloved in the snowy Midwest if it had a rear fiberglass canopy and a few extra seats. So Safro got the OK from Toyota to reach out to Winnebago, and violà: the Toyota Trekker was born. All 1500 Trekkers built were sold, and Toyota took notice. Less than four years later, the 4Runner hit the market. The 1984-87 4Runner received a 2.4-liter 22RE inline four-cylinder engine that generated 105 horsepower. 22re is a built proof engine. Will run all day long. Sure it lacks power, but it makes up for it in reliability. One of the best motors Toyota ever made. All 4Runners have been built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura. As of 2021, the 4Runner is sold in Bahamas, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama, Peru, the United States and Venezuela. But for stormy weather during the winter of 1966-'67, Jack Safro might never have gone into the business of selling Toyota cars. "It was between Christmas and New Year's, and it was snowing and snowing - unbelievable - and, in the car business, when it snows you might as well lock the door," he later recalled. A vacation in California seemed to be a good idea, and it was there he spotted two little old ladies driving past his rental car. "They were in a little boxy, square car, and I had no idea what kind it was," Safro said in a 1978 interview. "Then, that night in the hotel, it seemed every other commercial was on that car. It was a Toyota." Then a used car dealer, Safro was soon convinced that he needed to sell that car. "The first year, we sold 42 cars, which made us the largest dealership in the Midwest," he said. Safro kept expanding his business and product lines to the current five locations in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. Back when he had to run his used car operation on a shoestring, Safro even did his Toyota research on the cheap. He called a California telephone operator, asking her if she had heard of a Toyota automobile. "Everyone has," came the answer. A scouting call to a Toyota dealer brought praise for the new Japanese car. "I asked for the service manager, and I asked, 'Hey, how are the cars?' " Safro said. "He said, 'They're excellent. We have a heck of a time getting them back for the thousand-mile checkup.' " That was good enough for Safro. He "chased the heck" out of a distributor, winning a franchise and his first allotment of seven red Coronas. His family believes that Safro began learning about taking care of customers while growing up at a resort on the Brule River near Superior. There, he and a brother and sister were raised by family friends after troubles during the Great Depression. Strong work ethic At 16, he made his way to Door County to pick cherries and then came to Milwaukee where his father lived. Homework at Custer High School was something that he did during the school day. "He went and worked a second-shift job, recapping tires, eight hours a day," said his son, John O. Safro. That led to other auto jobs and a gas station on W. Burleigh St. in Wauwatosa. In 1962, he began a used-car business complete with a one-car showroom, calling it Jack Safro's Pewaukee Motors. The business moved to Brookfield in 1970, this time as Jack Safro Toyota. Part of the inspiration for the business came from his own experience trying to buy a car. "He went to purchase a new Chevrolet, and he was dirty from his auto work," John said. "They wouldn't even talk to him. He had the cash in hand, he was ready to pay cash, and they wouldn't even talk to him." Safro figured he could do a lot better. "Jack was still working the floor, taking care of customers in the '80s," said Jim Tessmer, vice president of the Jack Safro Group. "His whole M.O. was customer service, better than any other dealer I've seen. He tried to instill in us, you treat a customer like a guest in your home." One car - the very first Toyota Corona he sold in 1967 - proved a particularly satisfying sale. Its owner brought it back in trade on another Toyota. The next owner brought it back as a trade-in, too. That time it didn't get off the lot. "We still have it," John said. Safro opened Jack Safro Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Oconomowoc in 1987. Lexus of Brookfield opened in 1989, followed by Lexus North Shore in 2001 and Infiniti North Shore in 2005. The dealerships now have more than 375 full- and part-time employees, and sold about 4,500 new cars and another 3,000 used cars in 2007. "We were one of the first eight Lexus dealers in the country," John said. In his earlier days, Safro also drove modified cars and midget cars at area tracks. "He'd make more money racing than he did for a week of work, if the car came back in one piece," John said. Safro also got his pilot's license and founded Select Aviation based at Crites Field in Waukesha. Above from: www.4runners.com/threads/4runners-wisconsin-origins.22157/

Great job, Pal. I got rid of my last vehicle, as i can't drive anymore a 1998 four runner SR5 Ltd. 300,000 kilos, I've had Jimmy's, Blazers, you çant compare because of weight. But I loved and miss my truck. I wasn't afraid to tow anything, used the lock-up rear-end many times, it was easily & truly my favorite vehicle.

I test drove a SR5 and was surprised at how comfortable I felt even though I am short! The body lean was considerable…I currently drive an old body on frame suv so I had thought that my driving style was already adjusted. I was wondering whether a different trim (with KDSS or XREAS) might be better for me.

We have a 2014 Trail...the first year of the 5th Gen. I have parked right next to a 2023 TRD Off Road and it is almost impossible to tell the difference. Yep, little box in the grill for the radar cruise and the stickers on the side. We "only" have 148,000 miles on it. Winch, lift, tires, lights, rock sliders and roof rails have changed our look a bit. Not in a hurry, but looking forward to the 6th gen or new Land Cruiser. Would love to get more than 15MPG and some new tech...

I just love your explanations about the working parts on my Toyota 4Runner SR5. I am female, 76 years old and I love my 4Runners. There's a lot I didn't know about my 2022. It just replaced our fifteen-year-old 2008 Toyota 4Runner. Obviously our favorite vehicle ever. You do do all of us such a wonderful service and we appreciate all your videos. The one thing that you did not explain to me was the gear shift lever and the things to the left. Am I supposed to be driving any of those? I appreciate any answer you can give me about that
