Incredibly practical. Our XSE Premium here in Oregon runs about 38 miles of electric in cold winters and in the summer the range can show 49-50. Felt very fortunate to get one in Fall ‘21. We essentially fill our tank once every 3 months when we have longer trips or feel we need to burn the fuel rather than risk it becoming a bit stale. We may start filling just half a tank for reserves.

Add fuel stabilizers (like Sta-Bil) to your fuel. It's often used to keep fuel fresh for a long time in motorcycles (for winter storage) and even boats (Sta-Bil have a marine version of their fuel stabilizers). That being said, a gas engine benefits from being run so I guess you still need to run it once in a while anyways.

Bought our Rav 4 Prime SE last July and love this car. We live in Arizona so have some of the opposite problems as our friends in the North. Summer heat drops the range down to between 42 and 45 miles miles and in the Winter here we get 48 to 50. We are able to get 80 to 90% of our daily driving in all EV mode. Highway range is more like 35 to 37 miles on a charge but that is not the point of this vehicle and with 550 miles of total range it rocks any roadtrip. We have owned it for nearly a year and strictly using the 110 V charger in our garage has been fine. We rarely use public chargers. The one downside to this car is if it is your car the rest of your family will use it as much as possible and tell you "why would we pay for gas when we can use your car?". So far we have put one and a 1/2 times the miles on this car as we put on our other cars. I was lucky and only paid 2500 over MSRP, Although I had to drive to California to find one. The only item I wish I could have bought separately from the XSE package would be the camera based rear view mirror for roadtrips when the back is full and our bikes blocked the backup camera. One feature that it is odd the software doesn't include is a record and display of how much total mileage is all EV, all ICE, or all hybrid. Only annoying feature is the excessively load deliberate programmed whine when backing up in EV mode. There is no option to turn it down or not have the noise when fully charged. However, if not fully charged you can force the ICE motor into charge mode which shuts off EV mode and voila no whine. Just remember to set back to EV mode once out of reverse. I have never loved a car but love this one.

My ‘21 R4P XSE is the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Better than Mercedes-Benz & Honda. Over 12K miles, not a single issue other than stability control software update recall. Up to 99 mpg combined since new. It’s one hen’s tooth worth waiting for IMHO.

We're fortunate and had our Xse Prime for 1 year now in Burnaby. It fits our needs perfectly. Lots of little trips around town and 99% of the time we're in pure EV mode. Warmer weather we get 88km range according to the dash...no hyper milage driving kind of thing...just regular driving. In the 1 year of ownership, we've used 1 tank of gas and that's only because we intentionally use it to prevent stale fuel. When we start to do trips again to Seattle, Interiors, etc..., no big deal, treat it like an efficient Hybrid and gas up during the road trip. Truly best of both worlds. We have an EV6 on order but the Prime will still be the primary vehicle for our family if we had to choose.

Just found your video. I ordered a Prime XSE about 3 weeks ago, fully expecting to wait a year or more to get it. I got a call from Kelowna Toyota 10 days later, telling me they had one. Turns out the buyer this car was brought in for was out of the country and would be for some time, so he declined. Next guy on the list had wanted a different color, and didn't mind waiting a little longer. I was next on the list and it was the color and trim I wanted. Just crazy luck! Had my Prime XSE for almost a year exactly and we still LOVE it. At least %95 of our driving is all EV, only have to gas up for road trips, or towing our SeaDoo to the lake.. I get about 60km EV range in winter and closer to 80km in summer. (BC Lower mainland) Charge mode to me makes no sense unless you need to use your 1500W inverter plug and need the battery.. For road trips I save the EV battery for stop/go areas like towns/cities or any situation where ICE is less efficient like uphills, use the ICE engine for higher speeds like highways... feel like that's more efficient than people who just run their battery dry immediately and then rely on HV the rest.

Electric range now with warmer weather, 50-mid 60's has been close to 50 miles on rural highways / and rural roads. With the battery completely depleted just on gas in pure hybrid mode varies from 40 - over 50 MPG. However, in the winter below about -10C the engine usually turns on. Also, if the temperature is les than +10C the engine seems to turn on (for a few minutes) as soon as you are going about 80 km/hr - I have assumed this is to warm up the battery for higher speed. On long road trips I get 6.4 l/100 km @ the 80 km/hr and 6.9l/100 km @100 km/hr.

I’ve had my RAV4 Prime for almost 2 years now. It’s a great SUV. The EV range is enough to be useful and I actually plug it in. A few of the PHEVs get such limited EV range it becomes a ‘why bother?’ It gets the full 300hp in HV mode and accelerates briskly. Not Tesla fast and you do have to burn gas as the trade off but it adds some fun. EV mode is plenty sufficient for everyday use and the immediate torque is still enjoyable. Oh, I strongly recommend the red color (unless you dislike red of course). It looks great, my car is easy to find in the sea of bland white and silver cars and you’ll get more compliments about your new car (if you care).

Great review, assuming you mean best Plug-In Hybrid with best efficiency I may vote for the Sorento PHEV as the best (full disclosure: I currently own it) if the Sorento PHEV comes with a heat pump. The sound insolation, amenities inside the car, resolutions of the screen are just better with the Sorento, not to mention the 4+2 seats as standard.

Prime is very good indeed, but it’s PHEV, not a full EV. If you include PHEV, I will say NX450h+ is a better choice for a little bit more money. The quality and design is on another level. But the problem for both at the moment is: you can’t get one. You have to either wait for 12 months or pay a dealer premium. Awesome review as always, Brian!
@EverydayReviews20222 жыл бұрын
The NX450H + is awesome as I tested it recently as well however it’s packaged much more expensive and doesn’t quality for any incentives. It might be a little easier to get because of that as well.
@joelowe8402 жыл бұрын
Also, the NX "Prime" is considerably smaller inside for both passengers and cargo plus the NX has no spare tire. I'd wait for the 2023 Rav4 Prime which should receive an upgraded infotainment system...

Yes, the heat pump is absolutely essential in ANY EV in cold climates. If the EV you are considering doesn't have a heat pump, for more efficient heating and cooling, AND battery pack preconditioning, when on the way to a DC Fast Charger, for a pure EV, keep shopping.

Full EV still do not have the range for me. If I go full EV I want a range of at least 700kms preferably 1,000. Battery technology is changing so fast that could be available to me by the time I'm ready to give up my RAV4 Prime. 🙂

I pre-ordered the RAV4 Prime since November 2020, I am still waiting for it… Not sure if it is my dealer or just Vancouver itself, but it sure seems slow. I already see new NX350Hs on the street, and that car was release a year after the R4P. I suspect I’ll end up getting the 2023 model at this point :)
@tomchan25592 жыл бұрын
It is the same in Toronto. Toyota Canada may only allocate TWO this year for your dealership. It is not the dealership and seems that US market is way more important than Canada. Same for many other Hybrids too.

I got mine in Blizzard Pearl & black two toned fully loaded about a week ago. It is beautiful in that color also. I would have taken almost any color, but I got my first choice. The dealer said you may have to take the car with whatever color and options it gets delivered in because they can't control what they get. Anyone on a wait list might want to be flexible on the color and options to get it quicker. The tax rebate on this car should bring it down to a price that could be justified, otherwise I don't think I could have justified it even with high gas prices. A full electric car would not have worked out for me for the similar reasons you state in your video. Most of our driving is local and we can just charge at night and almost never get gas. We didn't even have to modify the electrical at our house since it plugs into a standard outlet. We may eventually splurge for the upgraded fast charge outlet. I like to hear other people who have come to the same conclusion I have. Thanks for sharing!!

I would buy one but I hope they somehow incorporate a manual transmission into some of these PHEVs. Not sure how that would work but that’s my dream lol. Honda used to offer two different hybrids with a manual…

It's nice, but still not ideal for people in condos & apartments without dedicated chargers. Also it still sucks that Toyota charges subscription for remote climate control.
@EverydayReviews20222 жыл бұрын
However still a lot more ideal as you don’t have to charge if not convenient and you’re still gonna get great mileage and if your condo even has a 110 outlet, just plug in overnight and you’ll have a full battery in the AM.

This model DOES- NOT have a TURBO...But rather, a Naturally aspirated / Carb...........(important because it is well known that TURBOS stress engines)...simply said: see euro cars shop time!....this car combines the Elec Batt and engine to achieve *89 miles per Gallon in Hybred mode with HIGH torq, And VERY quick out of the hole...Jus' blew the doors off a 735i beemer...albeit for only a block ...( I am no dummy a V* will eventually pass many cars in the long dist. My car has Red Calipers against Powder coated Gloss spoke Black mags and All red "F" Sport Badges........ FAR better built than euro's (mine built in Japan) sadly, new releases are now being made in Canada! Like USA Union shops...no one gets fired for a hang over and bad work??? maybe)..... However, Lexus is Far more reliable...Far better Re-Sale that Euro beemers or mercedes.......indeed mine has Gone UP in price...Not many cars you can find Like that!... the rav4 prime is far from a good ev. First Toyota doesn't make enough of them. second dealers are marking up the prices. you are much better off getting the Ford Escape plugin hybrid. It is being made in much larger numbers and wait times are much lower. plus none of the dealers are doing the dealer markup. Toyota dealerships are making a killing off of marking up this car.
