@Ces K people still drive 90s priuses. Nobody is buying a $8000 or whatever battery for a $2000 car - people just rebuild these batteries on the cheap. Shitty rebuild lasts a year or two, good rebuild that replaces every last one of the battery modules lasts almost as long as a new battery, while costing several times less. I want this Rav4 Prime. If I had the money - I'd get one immediately. It's really just a larger, higher clearance, cool, straight looking Prius Prime - and I do love the idea of having a prius prime.
@iSugarRushO

Ces K nope, if it was a regular hybrid, your point would be more valid. If your daily commute is under 80 miles, you could run on 100% electricity everyday and not spend a single penny on gas (if you charge your car at work and home). You would save 10k in 5 years time, so definitely worth.

@korswe
@korswe 4 жыл бұрын
If you plan to operate it on EV mode most of the time, the gasoline-powered engine system will degrade over time. Gasoline is volatile and will absorb moisture, so if it is bot depleted on a regular basis, it gets stale. Have you tried to start up a lawnmower that has been sitting in a shed for a long time?
@andrewholst9656
@andrewholst9656 4 жыл бұрын
@@korswe That's not how that works. The i3 and Volt both force a maintenance cycle that runs the motor to burn off gas, and then require you to refill with some fresh gas afterwards.
@korswe
@korswe 4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Holst. Good point. However, running some sort of a maintenance program to burn off stale or would-be-stale gasoline wouldn’t run long enough for the ICE to get hot enough to keep the valves. I know it’s a four banger with both port and direct injection, but you still need to run the engine hot for a long period of time. I’ve serviced many engines before. Customers with lots of city driving tend to more issues with everything than freeway drivers.

I heard that a lot when we bought our 2002 Prius. 200K miles later it has way more than paid for the difference (almost $5000 in those days.) It has consumed roughly 4000 gallons at an average price around $2.50 per gallon, or $10,000 in gasoline. If it were not a hybrid it would be hard pressed to do better than 25 mpg, being mostly in-town miles. At 25 mpg it would have consumed about $20,000 in gasoline. Saving $10,000 on a $20,000 car not good enough? Besides consumables: tires, wiper blades, 12V batteries (three of them) and a windshield, all it has needed beyond routine maintenance was a $150 inverter coolant pump I spent a couple hours replacing. I never had a car that had cost less than $500 per year, doing my own work.

Cool video, lots of good information. The charge battery button can be handy if you're going to be taking a interstate drive and then doing some city driving after that. You could leave with a full charge press that button and the car I believe will maintain battery charge and run mostly in a hybrid and gasoline mode. If you're going to be running down the interstate for 200 miles you're going to be running the gasoline engine anyway. So in certain circumstances that could be an efficient way to then drive on all electric at your destination city.

I see what you are saying and get it that recharge mode is best for those that run 70+ mph and darting in and out of traffic and simply trying to get where you need to go in a hurry and or travel and keeping up with faster traffic but once you hit traffic jam and or stop and go traffic well you are set with a ev mode or even if it is a fast pace traffic area and then you get to a slower part of a highway like 60-70 for a good stretch that you can go into ev mode

I drive a Pacifica PHEV, and I love it. This video shows what I really love about PHEV's. Any time you let off the throttle or gently press the brake, the vehicle is using the electric motor as a generator and pumping energy into your battery. FREE FUEL!!!!!!! I've driven without plugging in before and even without any charge in the battery, on a 100 mile round trip to L.A. it drove 30% on battery and averaged 31mpg. So in essence it produced free fuel, which it used for 30% of the drive. With gas prices in So. Cal. Averaging over $4.50 a gallon, I'm loving this PHEV. Plus it's saving on brakes and the engine is actually only being used less than 40% of the time while I plug it in, less need for oil changes and maintenance on the ICE engine. Theoretically at 100,000 miles the engine will have only driven about 40,000 miles and almost all of those are highway miles with NONE of them sitting there idling. I would think that PHEV RAV 4 would make an AWESOME Police cruiser.

When I'm in stop-and-go traffic during rush hour with my Avalon Hybrid or even the Ford Fusion hybrid I rented on a trip, the silence that comes from a car running on electricity rather than a gas engine helps ease my anxiety. To complete the energy consumption figures you also need to charge the car to the level before the trip and add that energy(or its cost) to the gas consumption to give a total cost in cents per mile.

Exactly right, Dude. You nailed it. I did a rough calculation for my area. Electricity per killowatt hour costs .13 cents. If the battery is an 18 killowatt hour battery, it costs $2.34 to charge it from zero to full. He drove 71 miles using one gallon of gas. If you add on the $2.00 for electricity, the savings are practically nothing.

I would be interested to know how the end result is effected by adding in the cost of electric used to top up the battery back to the same level as the start as this is also a fuel used to transport the vehicle over this test. I was the owner of a PHEV and it was so annoying when the cost of charging the battery was never mentioned or included in running costs as it gives a false m.p.g. to prospective buyers. The cost should be converted to amount of fuel it be and added to the fuel used and the combined figure to give a True m.p.g.

They didn’t underestimate anything. Common sense would tell them they could easily sell 10X the 5,000 they allocated to the US. They are not new to car manufacturing and sales. They just didn’t want to sell many for some reason. Either because it a compliance vehicle being produced at a loss and they want to only sell the minimum possible or else because they are just using it as an experiment and don’t want to risk technical/mechanical issues dragging down their average reliability ratings if it was sold in mass quantities.

Tommy, very good video and description of the RAV4 Prime. I think that the gas mileage should be based on the miles driven using the gas engine. Also you should calculate the cost to recharge the batteries. that would be the total cost of the trip. Also include the time to charge the batteries. TFL has done comparisons like that in the past. I get that you had limited time for the test. I think that would be a fairer comparison. When testing hybrids or electric vehicles TFL should set up a standard test for the best comparison. We rely on you guys to give us the best fair comparisons as well as being fun to watch. You guys do a great job! thanks again for a great video!

I am currently getting 43 to 46 MPG on my 2019 Rav4 Hybrid, so this thing should be awesome. I paid about 27 to 28k for my base model Rav4 Hybrid, and this according to Toyota's website comes in at almost 40k for the base model. I don't know if it is or isn't worth it, considering you are approaching Tesla range price point. For me I would go with the Prime simply because for my commute I could likely get to work and home with out using much gas if any, and I like the idea of having gas as a back up. I am getting this current mileage because of the summer, during the winter my Rav4 Hybrid MPG dropped down to about 38 to 39. Cold weather mixed with winter fuel plays a part in this. I also imagine the cold weather has some affect on those batteries in these if they are not garage kept. I would love for TFLC to do a video on how these are charged, and if it is even plausible to charge one with out a garage.

I think the price factors in the fact that this is a Plug-in Hybrid and a very fast car at the same time. Basically, you get the best tech that gas and electricity has to offer. I don't think it was completely due to underestimating demand; I suspect it was an issue of being able to source enough battery modules to actually produce the vehicles. The mpg number is bogus because it drove mostly on the battery charge for that short drive. The electric portion threw off the average because it was over represented and not counted towards fuel use costs. By this standard, if you only drove only 30 miles, the mpg would be infinity? If you drove on a 400 mile road trip and used most of the tank and also counted the use of electricity, the mpg average would have been more valid.
