2022 University of Chicago Athletics Hall of Fame inductee: Donald Thompson (Class of 1947/1950)
Donald Thompson was a star fencer for the Maroons during the late 1940s. An epee specialist, Thompson qualified for the NCAA national meet three times during his collegiate career - he placed second in 1949 and fourth in 1948. He was also the 1948 Big Nine epee champion (now known as the Big Ten Conference). Thompson's skills were rewarded with a spot on the 1948 U.S. Olympic team that competed in London. At age 20, he was the youngest member of the Olympic fencing squad. Thompson was later named the Stagg Medal winner in 1949. Post-graduation, he remained active in the sport and won the national epee title in 1953.
