I remember back many years when we were on strike. This was probably in the early 1980's and the only railroad radios we had were on the locomotive or base stations. But I'm a radio guy so I monitored what management was doing listening to their railroad mobile phone channel and the yard frequencies. It was hilarious listenning to 'Yardmasters' and 'Trainmaster' operating locomotives and trying to switch or spot railcars. This was before intermodal so most everything was boxcars, tanks, gondolas, etc. Consequently there was LOTS of SWITCHING. One mobile phone call the 'Superintendent' made was to one of the locomotives that management was using and wanted to know 'How are things going?" Their reply was: "Well, we spotted one boxcar at Gallo Wine and derailed two boxcars outside their gate." "We can't get around the derailled boxcars to spot National Paper so were going to bring this locomotive back to the yard." 'Superintendent's' reply: SEE IF YOU GUYS CAN IMPROVE YOUR AVERAGE and GET THAT LOCOMOTIVE BACK HERE WITHOUT DERAILLING IT TOO !" Wes: THANK GOD NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. They had no idea how to operate a locomotive, switch, or spot, correctly couple trainline air, or make a legal 'Air Test'. So if the railroads don't come to their senses......well....you may want to stay a safe distance away from any railroad tracks. I welcome your thoughts.

As always, stunning locations and terrific videography. And all natural - no dumb music or narration. We had our first snow of the season today in upstate New York, which means I’ll be leaning on Spencer’s videos to get through the winter!

I ran trains across NE, SD, WY for 40 years. It is so automated now it’s not even fun anymore. Glad I’m retired.

I remember seeing older up box cars probably from the seventies with a route system map stating the automated railway.

The UP train (on the fifth clip of this video) is the only one I’ve seen with the lights flashing back-and-forth. Does this mean that all the other UP engineers I’ve seen are too lazy to put there lights like when seeing a crossing while honking 😂
@Trentm1292 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty the lights only go back and forth when the bell is activated. Also I think it depends on the model.
@Izaiah_wizz2 жыл бұрын
It’s an Ex Southern Pacific engine. They had flashing ditch lights but it got repainted into UP and still has the remaining ditch lights from the southern pacific
@western_pine_railfan2 жыл бұрын
@TheLegendaryOutlaw Its road specific, meaning only certain class 1 railroads have it. Those companies are Norfolk Southern, CSX, and plenty of fallen flags like Southern Pacific. BNSF, UP, CP, CN, KCS, and usually other shortlines dont have it
