Union Pacific West Colton Railyard Operations - Railfanning West Colton, CA 11/23/2022

A day's worth of operations at the large Union Pacific West Colton Railyard! Trains are seen arriving and departing, as well as being put together by trios of classic switcher locomotives. In addition, high priority doublestack Z trains can be seen passing by on the adjacent UP Alhambra Subdivision. With half the yard supposed to turn into a full scale intermodal yard in the future to rival BNSF's San Bernardino terminal, this yard is slated to become a lot less busy with carload traffic in the near future, as traffic is diverted to be classified at nearby Kaiser-Declezville, Montclair, City of Industry, and Mira Loma Yards.

Good Video. Thanks for shooting it. I live near the UP Roseville yard which is bigger than WColton, but unfortunately, there is almost no good viewing points of the departure or arrival areas in Roseville other than using a drone. West Colton has a ballon track, so all departure leave the same direction, which make Pepper Ave a perfect place to shoot.

Thanks for watching! Currently, our balloon track is out of commission due to a history of recent derailments on it. They now only use it to flip power sets around. Westbound departures now go through the departure yard and enter the mainline at CP Riverside Ave (AL 935/SP 535)
