Got the Mk8 Moonstone Gray Autobahn, and the 2,000mi I have driven it have been pure fun. Tech easy to adapt to, seats are amazing, and the drive is super smooth and responsive. Lot's of thumbs-up from GTI fans too. I bet you get plenty of that in Vegas. Best $40k value on the market.

I could give a 52,000 mile review on MK7. Still like driving it, no major issues except bent wheels bubbled tire sidewalls, and a bit of an oil leak. Great daily driver, low profile tires, well they don't like pot holes. By the way the steering rack is magical, its progressive rate gear ratio, so its not touchy on center and you don't have to crank it over in the parking lot. Its actually one of the most spectacular parts of the car and something you really miss when you drive something else. Its a big deal.

Wasn’t a fan of the wheels at first but the S trim makes the most sense. You still get the interior lighting, digital dash, and those awesome seats. Really thinking about this as my next car after watching reviews

I personally live the wheels. In my opinion, they’re unique. The autobahn wheels look more common. The 40th Anniversary ones are cute. If I were a guy, that’s the trim I’d go for right now. Tornado Red or Pamello Yellow.

DSG = go fast / 6 speed = have fun

@@bcshay both are fast once moving. From a stop dsg launch control will be at least half second faster if no nannies kick in. But are fun. In a race, around a track, it's a toss up one is lighter slightly more control of the car with shifting, the other shifts much faster but if you know the track and what gears or best either could win.

Hi! Nice review! Lots of opinions on your comments section. I have a '22 GTI SE in Atlantic Blue with black wheels. 9th VW overall 3rd GTI. Traded in my '17 Passat to get this car. The last 2 cars were Passats. This is easily my most favorite car I've ever owned. As soon as APR develops the software I'll get a tune on it. Just looking for a bit more power in 2nd & 3rd and on the interstate. Would've got the R but I couldn't find one. Lucky I got my GTI. Enjoy your VW!!!

No they are certainly not, anyone who has driven a simple stage 1 flashed VW will tell you this, you sacrifice zero liability and end up with a completely different car not only in terms of power but also in smoothness and refinement of the power/torque curve.

The car makes over 240 WHP....so yes it is more than 241 crank HP that is advertised.

I tuned mine a week after buying it. The EQT tune I have is amazing. Superior to the stock tune in every way. It’s not just the power but the overall drivability that is vastly improved.

We have a 2018 GTI autobahn. Your wheels look better than the wheels that came with the MK7.5. We changed the wheels because we didn’t like the design and they make it impossible to clean the calipers. We got OZ racing wheels. I was surprised to feel how heavy the stock wheels are. Lighter wheels are a worthy upgrade. Great car overall and the only thing we don’t like is the squeaky sunroof but other than that we are happy with it.

I'm told the drive modes default to comfort or eco when you turn the car back on - only with an automatic trans. The manual trans cars, they stay in whatever drive mode you were in when you turned the car off. I can't test this myself, so consider it "internet information"

Not true. You can tell because of throttle response and if the engine does pops. If it still pops after turning it off in sport mode, Then it would be true

“I really like value” hell yes brother, me too. All about that price to performance ratio. S trim GTI is absolutely the best value of the lineup. I’m about to buy a lightly used 2023 S 6MT in reflex silver for 30k. Almost bought a brand new 2023 SE 6MT. Could have got it for 35k before taxes and fees, which is actually a great deal considering MSRP was almost 38k! But even considering the discount, to me, the sunroof (which looks worse than slick top and will surely have problems or added expenses in cost of ownership over the long term) bigger infotainment screen, light bar, and HK sound system do not warrant an additional 5k being that they add no performance benefits. If anything, having a sunroof is a performance detriment. I also thought about waiting for a 2024 380 S manual but all of those are coming with 19inch wheels standard and DCC. I much prefer how the 18s on the S and SE ride and after test driving an autobahn I really did not think DCC was all that it’s cracked up to be. It’s definitely nice, but the stock suspension on these are plenty good. Plus, I’m sure DCC is again something that costs you a lot more money in the long run should they ever need maintenance or need to be replaced. You made a great choice with the S trim and I can’t wait to get mine and join in on the fun!

@@JVette01 I think it depends on the climate of your area. Back when I bought mine they didn't come with the same tires everywhere in the country and in 2015 the all season were horrible. Drove on the rock hard hockey pucks for like 40,000 miles.

You got a smile on your face now! Imagine the smile on your face with a stage 1 ECU/TCU tune. This is how the vehicle should have come from the factory. Factory tune is waaaay to conservative considering the capabilities of the EA888 engine (un-built 500hp+).

The new MQB platform is really good for fun daily-driving. Eventually when prices drop I wanted to get an s3. Honestly I think you should try to get a test-drive in one, even if you're not interested in buying. Like a golf R in a suit, but a really nice interior, improved as a daily-driver in almost everyway over the golf that's why I find it cool. If I wanted to make a build I'd probably start out with a gti (possibly manual) and just mod from there. VW/AUDI is really outdoing themselves. There's not really a true competitor for these cars. Mercedes A-class hatches aren't available in the US market, and bmw radically changed the 2 series this year. You can only really compare these to other hothatches/sedans and those lack either power or luxury that this offers.

Too bad S3 is a sedan, I think the hatchback is much more suitable for me cuz I have a fairly small garage. But S3 still fit, but with the Golf R, it will be much more comfortable parking into the garage.

There are two dealbreakers that the S3 has. In North America you can only get it with horrible hot and sweaty leather seats. And you can't get it in a hatchback. Either one of these things alone would be dealbreakers but the S3 has BOTH.

Nice review! I have a question: Are there any differences for S-trim between putting the gear from “D” to “S” and select the drive mode to “Sports” ? “S” holds gear up to higher rev only, while “Sports” mode also changes steering and engine noise as well? What else? I am curious.

@@kikomanster8188 Lots of reports of the issue. The radiator sits down in a bracket and the clips that hold it in have come loose for some people which allows the radiator to move around a bit and a lower hose will hit a pully which will wear right through the hose causing a full loss of coolant. You can pop the hood and see if the rad is loose and push it back down into the bracket or ziptie it down so it doesn't come out.

I have been watching reviews of the new 2022 GTI for months and this is the FIRST time ive been informed that the base trim has a volume and tune knob. I am blown away lol. All these big time reviewers always get their hands on the fully loaded trims with the 10 inch display and complain when there is no knob. This one little detail you showed me has now convinced me to get a base GTI. Thank you.

I too am a fan of the base trim as I did the same thing with my Mk7.5. It's also interesting that with the smaller infotainment screen, they include knobs. The larger one in the higher trims has that unlit volume slider pad. Have you had any unintended button presses on the steering wheel with your hands/palms when turning?

No I haven’t actually. The only thing I’ve done by mistake is press the volume button when trying to press the down arrow. I’ve never pressed a button when driving.

Just hit 8.8K on my 2022 GTI SE, I really love this car. Fun when I want, but makes a great highway trip car. I just did 2k miles from Phoenix to Sacramento and back, it was a breeze in this car. The climate control is dumb, but that's really my only complaint, the interior feels really nice, the cloth seats are fantastic, the car is a joy to drive and tbh doesn't feel that different from my mom's 2019 Audi S3 in terms of power and handling. I think I'm on the VW/Audi train for the foreseeable future.

So they would announce on their camera that they were in Mexico in an attempt to cancel out any evidence that they were street racing in their own area. Over time it became, "Hey, let's go to Mexico," meaning let's go race.

It does seems like the S trim is the most value for the money. On my 7.5 SE I wish I could delete the sunroof. It creaks so much even when brand new. Is there a feature you wish you had from the higher trims?

The only thing I wish they will make standard is the adaptive headlights for all trims then I will be glad with the base S. Now that VW are doing the Harman Kardon delete on upper trims, I don’t see the need to move up to higher trims unless you want the dcc and leather/ventilated seats. Best wheels on the autobahn

I bought a MK7 GTI S 6spd brand new in 2017 for $23k. The next trim up was selling for $28k, and those who bought it also upgraded just about everything. So if you’re like me, who is going to upgrade things like brakes, wheels, suspension, tuning, etc., the base model is the best value by far! I got all that, as well as BMP Tuning headlights and a wave track LSD, and my cost came about $6k less still than those buying the next upper trim level and modifying them.

@Jace's Own World: The sunroof horror stories is exactly why I sought out a MK7.5 GTI S. I then replaced the stock halogen headlights with quality aftermarket, did an APR tune stage 1 to 319hp, and voila - all the GTI I ever need.

It’s extremely smooth and shifts are lightning fast. Also, the sound between shifts add to the fun. Another thing, RPMs are low on the highway unlike the manual

Infotainment knobs is reason enough to "downgrade" to the S model IMHO. As for "infotainment is not an issue", I agree - IF the car is standing still. But dealing with that clusterfuck of a HVAC interface in a moving, bouncing car? Total FAIL.

It's nothing special, but it's decent enough for a base model system. It isn't complete crap like the base model systems in my F250 and my Exige.

Like my 2019 GTI I find the kings red the best color for the GTI. Not a fan of the wheels, easy to fix, the front end also not a fan and the electronics in the interior needs much improvement.

The S seems like the one to buy, but no direct access to climate control…that’s a major flaw. I’d rather have sliders than nothing. Imagine having to go up a trim level to get climate controls. 😂

The R is basically unavailable (can’t find them anywhere) and I did not want to pay the markup for it. I also wanted to keep my mustang and not spend more money on a daily than I did on my “fun/weekend” car

You know the mustang has a presence. When you drive a GTI or a Golf R people that aren't into cars just think your driving something on par with a Toyota Carolla. So you spend $40,000-$45,000 for the R and everybody thinks you work at Walmart. If I had one major issue with my GTI its this, and at $45,000 it would be a little more frustrating. Sometimes its a good thing though.

The Focus used to outperform the GTI don't know about the mk8. But the Focus has a cheap interior and a stiffer ride, which for most people makes it a worse daily, plus you can't buy one anymore. They probably were more fun when you wanted to do some aggressive driving though.

@@JVette01 As a person who has both...me in the Mk 7.5 DSG w/ a mild tune can keep up with my wife in the stock 335i manual. But that's not very informative because she can't shift fast and she's too chicken to hit redline. The real apples-to-apples data is hidden in those 4th gear 65 to 85 mph pulls. If that happens while I'm following her down the highway, she definitely creeps away from me, but it isn't an embarrassing difference.

That color is great, especially with the tint. I just wish the driving mode (and whatever else) wouldn't reset every time you start if up. My past 3 cars have had something like that, and it's always driven me nuts. I don't want to do a pre-drive setup every time I get into the car. I just want to drive!

@@JVette01 don’t do it. I understand people do it because it’s cheaper than a full catback exhaust, but it is very loud and it doesn’t sound good at all. If you can afford it go for a full catback setup. You won’t regret it.

I daily drive my GTI with a straight pipe only retaining my primary cat and I find it not that bad. I personally like the deep tone from my exhaust. Ofcourse if thats not your taste and you can afford it get an aftermarket catback.

Thanks for speaking truth about the infotainment. All the journalist reviews were such overreactions and lots of drama 🙄 NONE of them figured out the shortcut menu which is an easy swipe down on the SE & Autobahn. Think the word “journalist” has changed its meaning lol. Agreed, climate control can be annoying but there’s also voice commands you can use to control just about everything. Not sure if that’s on select trims, I haven’t tried using it in my SE yet haha. One thing that gets me is all the Bitching about haptic buttons and touch everything, meanwhile everyone uses CarPlay and Android Auto on touch screens with no buttons and no one s says a word. There’s sooo much more great things about this car than the minor annoyances.

Well, thats probably not the specialty of our GTI's. Get yourself a nice 2.0L Honda Accord. But you know the battery life of all these new electric cars are probably only around 100,000 miles so we can probably do better than them. Even Honda now with the 1.5L turbo and CVT's, I don't think they will hold up like the old Honda's.

I bought a mk6 gti 1 year ago with 96k mileage. It was the worst absolute piece of shit purchase. Car needed over 7grand worth of work and still runs like shit. Never buy a vw again ever

96K is a lot of miles and wear & tear for any kind of car. Apparently you lack experience and knowledge in purchasing used cars vehicles, since you had to spend $7k in repairs on a used car with 96K and are complaining about it. Sounds like the previous owner/owners probably didn’t maintain the GTI very well. As an owner of a 2017 MK7 SE, my opinion and that of many other GTI owners is that VW makes a fine but not a perfect vehicle. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another GTI or R in the future. ☮️
