And the mk7 weirdly had a far better interior than the mk8, the materials used were better, the infotainment wasn’t anywhere near as fiddly etc. and it was still pretty up to date with modern tech like android auto/apple carplay and digital guage cluster as an option. This new golf has cheaper materials, ugly gloss black everywhere, no buttons at all, and a bullshit laggy infotainment

Test drive one today. Picking it up Wednesday. For those wondering about the touch screens and no physical buttons, it's a bit annoying. It does require a learning curve, but it's nowhere near as bad as the internet is making it out to be. You can take it to VW and they'll update firmware making it more responsive as well. The concerns are there, but shouldn't scare you away from considering purchasing one. More of a to each their own situation. Yes, I do think the 7.5 is infotainment is superior. Picked up a new MK8 GTI Autobahn w DSG, driven about 1k miles so far and just paired it with a JB4 tune... WOW. Coming from an MK7, sure it's haptic buttons and infotainment take some time getting used to, but once you get past that, I have no complaints. This is by far a better, more refined, premium, faster and better driving machine than the MK7 IMO. The DCC works amazingly. The looks have definitely grown on me as well. This is a great looking car, and I get plenty of compliments, more so than the MK7. As a daily driver, throw it into comfort, soften the DCC, and you can cruise around comfortable. Throw it into Sport (or your custom settings) and it's a true driving machine. Couldn't be happier with my decision with the new MK8 GTI. Don't let the infotainment scare you from purchasing one, that is if you can find one with the shortage of supply.

If you take into consideration, that the mk7 was released in 2016 and the mk8 in 2019 (delta 3 years). We can assume that VW would want to sell a new model for at least 3 years meaning they could release a new Golf in 2032. And even till then they would have 10 years time where they could technically sell 3 more generations. VW is selling electric cars btw, and there is an eGolf parallel to the Golf GTE. @@White__Ink @ShufflingPicaso I understand the perceived "sportiness" and "manliness" of a manual transmission (having driven many in my life) but it is old technology. Spending a lot of time in heavy traffic is a pain with a manual transmission and I feel a car equipped with a sporty DSG (like the R) is a lot more responsive, acceleration is continuous (no shift lag) and it is way quicker than a manual. A lot has to do with what you expect of a car, having left behind the younger years of my life I like the flexibility of a DSG, you can drive it nice and relaxed or you can hoon around. My Mk8 R has the Performance Pack and the Nurburg setting makes it a joy, since it will let you hit the rev limiter without shifting. If possible I would suggest test driving both to see what fits your style.

I saw so many reivews trashing the infotainment that I pretty much wrote this car off. I had the opportunity to drive one this week and it really wasn't that bad. You can set shortcuts for things like traction control, it has automatic climate control so you pretty much just set it and forget it, and over-the-air updates have sped up the system considerably. For me, it looks super clean, and it doesn't detract from the driving experience, which is awesome. It's the perfect amount of power and refinement for a daily driver. Once I graduate college, I really will consider buying one of these. Hopefully they will illuminate the center swipe controls by then lol

If memory serves, virtually every new generation of Golf variants (e.g. GTI and Golf R) is met with cries of despair from the previous generation that the vehicle has been ruined. The MK8 generation is no exception. It might be worthwhile to consider that virtually every review I've seen of each variant points to significant improvements in power (including the benefits of lower RPM peak torque) and improved suspension and handling. Furthermore, the availability of eye candy in the form of the highly configurable dash and heads up display has drawn praise. It may seem obvious but apparently it's necessary to point out that those changes don't come at no cost either in terms of design or production, especially when the development and production costs of the previous generation have long since been paid for. Thus, to keep the MSRPs constrained, it's necessary to find cost cutting measures somewhere. It's clear that VW has done so by cheapening some controls and overall interior designs and materials. As an owner of a Mk7.5 (Autobahn) GTI I share some of those sentiments. And I'm unlikely to benefit greatly from more HP and torque or eye candy that doesn't tell me more than I already can access on my vehicle. On the other hand if I were using my GTI on the track frequently I suspect I'd be happy to make the trade VW has made available in the MK8. And if I felt I was at the upper limit or performance or handling on my current ride I'd look forward to considering the MK8 GTI or Golf R. And I'd be grateful that the price increase in the new models are no more than they are.

I'm sure with practice I would get better at using it, but it would still bug me every time I go for a drive. These days, the biggest thing separating one brand of car to another (at least in the affordable segment) is the UI and if the experience is frustrating, I want nothing to do with it. Especially because modifying it to work for me just isn't an option with tightly integrated electronics.

I dig the looks, especially in the green paint and the new fog lights, though I question how effective they actually are. Not a fan of all the touch screens and haptic feedback, especially on the steering wheel. Too many automakers are trying too hard to make their vehicles seem tech cool, actually making them worse. Still, there’s a learning curve with most new cars, so maybe buyers will be okay with this after a few weeks of getting used to it.

Just buy a sportwagen with AWD (4motion) and tune it, or the alltrack. I have an 18 sportwagen with a 6 speed manual and 4motion and love it. APR stage 1 tune on it made a massive difference. You can throw on the IS20 from the gti or the is38 from the golf r and pretty much make it an r wagon
@evalonious
@evalonious 2 жыл бұрын
@@chasemcquown yes…great idea. I’ve got an 09 wagon now but the APR stage one tune only gets 12 hp gain for my year with the 5 cyl. And VW still wants $800 for that. Interior ruins it for me. I can live with the step back in exterior looks and the steep price hike but when you start putting form over function and adding touch screens everywhere- I'm out. Part of me really thinks the interior cost cutting is VW just trying to save after dieselgate so maybe the Mk9 will be more on form for what a GTI should be.
