We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acre homestead. We just finished building our log cabin in 2018. Now we are focused on trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey we continue to develop our homestead and farm, while becoming more self sufficient.

You say you failed on some of your goals, but you also accomplished a lot that weren't on your goal list. You could do a video on all the projects that you worked on in 2022, then it would feel like you got more done then you expected. Some of your side projects will make your goals/chores/projects easier to complete.

When you redo the firewood shed, build yourself some wood racks from pallets, put sides on them head high and the just pick them up with the tractor forks and move them. Cuts your stack time by 3/4, you can also carry them to the porch and stack it in your rack.

JudithB Our local folk do this at the splitter, then the full pallet is moved and for sale. When someone buys firewood, they either load the pallet on the truck for delivery, or empty it into folks truck or trailer. Saves a lot of extra handling!

For cutting thru that foam insulation so you can get to the outside of the dog kennel here is a good way to do it. Get yourself a filleting or boning knife and heat it up and then do a plunge thru the insulation and start cutting your outline of the door. You will need to heat it several times while doing this but you will avoid most of the crumbly mess as if you sawed it with a saw. I like your list of goals and they seem achievable. Good luck in this new year and your new ventures in farm life.

To solve your barn drainage problem a permanent solution would be to excavate around the barn external foundation wall to four feet below the lower bank barn grade and lay a perforated drainage pipe surrounded with pea gravel on bottom, sides and top. Instead of geotextile you can cap with a coarse sand choker layer than backfill with sandy loam and form of a shallow swale along the barn.

When you go to have the well tested you're going to have to pump the well down to remove any stagnant water that is in the well before having it tested. I found this out the hard way when I moved into my house. The water test came back with bad results and I was convinced I needed a very very expensive water filtration system... Turns out that the well sat for so many years it just needed to be pumped of the junk in it... Shocked (bleach and sit for 24hrs before use) and then ran for a few days (a week for me) before retesting. It came back basically perfect with only mild sediment in the water ($50 whole house filter fixed that, with filter being changed every 3-4 months). I have had it retested multiple times since and ever had shocking test results. Mostly just hard water and sediment, and some iron, which is common. The water testing company kept asking me why I got my water tested when it kept coming back better than tests for the local municipalities😅. I would look into building code in your state and area to make sure testing companies don't automatically report flagged results to your health department. While I know you want to use the well for farm use, it won't stop your health department from showing up and complaining until you prove it's farm use. Also, ask any company you use for the test if they report and mention it is a well for farm use, not household use.

If y’all still want to put a fishing pier in think about building one using plastic blue barrels with a wooden deck on top that way you can move it around the entire pond just a thought. Here in the lower part of Louisiana we build like that so as we can move them for hurricanes

Congratulations on making plans that will improve your farm. While viewing other KZbin videos I find many pond owners suggest that all trees in or near the dam be removed, because when the trees die then as the root systems decays the hollow root holes create tunnels for water to drain the pond, Keep up the good work. I enjoy your KZbin videos. I grew up on a farm, and being in my 80's, we moved away from Illinois to be nearer our children.

Solar on roof of new barn. Strongly consider mounting it a few feet above the ground. I have had experience with this. Cons for barn roof: Holes in new roof, access for snow removal, access for installation and repair. Also lower wind crossection on ground. It will be worth finding a place. We do like your channel and you genuineness.

Unsolicited suggestion. Depending on the location relative to your house, your firewood shed could be a perfect place to put your solar panels. You need an improved roof there and the panels can serve the dual purpose of providing power and serve as roofing material for a shed. Building a dual purpose equipment shed/solar ground array is one of MY goals for the year!

I do love how every year you tell us how you did the year before and what your goals are for the coming year and plans for the future. I wish you the very best. Will be praying for you to reach a 100% this year and following along. I too have made major goals for myself this year that involve my health and improvements for that, I am 69, will turn 70 in March. I hope to quit all sugar and flour by my birthday as well as my vaping. I did quit smoking in 2015 now to quit the vaping a big one as well as the sugar and flour and loosing and loosing 23 pounds. I also have 25 quilts to make as welll as keeping up with my gardening and yard work. My husband (he will turn 76 this month) are both disabled and I do all the cooking house work, our side work, gardening, canning, mowing, and etc. I don't have a KZbin channel so can I keep you updated to have someone to be responsible to? Will that work for you?Well anyway those are my goals for this year. You see the reason I am quilting so much is in case I'm not around so long. I want to leave quilts for my 3 granddaughters, wedding presents to them and baby quilts for them and some quilts for my daughter for Christmas and her birthday. She is now 42 and her husband of 20 years died 2 years ago from Covid after being in the Navy for 20 years. They had all these plans for their life after he got out of the Navy. He left 3 daughters, now 22, 19, 12.

You have a full plate for the year. I know that will keep you out of trouble. You could run furring strips 1x2's on your wall in the shop to compensate for the stud irregularities. Opening that barn wall might make it possible to have a loading area for the steers. Hope the well works out. your water bill must be quite high with all the animals.

You might get your well checked out sooner rather than later so if it turns out you can't use it, you can go ahead look into what it will take to have another one drilled. Evan your a big dreamer, watching your current video the goals you set for yourself are very big. I don't want to rain on your parade but you've given yourselves a very high goal. You talk alot about what has to be done. First you say that you've got an electrical background, but if thats the case add up the wattage of the appliances that you want to run, two size your solar system to I figure one and a half times order then you need and buy alot of batteries 🔋 to last for two to three days run time. Next finishing the wall in the work shop before you work on the tractor 🚜 the tractor will not get repaired before the summer too much work. As for the field your setting yourself up for disappointment both you and your wife work full time, trying to do all of those tasks will put you in ICU GOOD LUCK .

You have some good goals in the planning stage, thought you might paint barn roof this year, but barn paint is still as scarce as hen's teeth in my area. Have you considered retaining 12 acres as crop land ? Rental income should make a nice dent in Real Estate Taxes, which tend to rise every three years. At any rate, take your vitamins everyday, you will need them to accomplish your great plans.

Hi I think everything you guys do is cool. One thing I might add to your steer area is to improve your drainage. Remember all the water inside that corner on the left. Also the whole backside is mud. I would look into multiple draintiles from the barn down to at least the fence line to try and dry that area out. Especially if you want to drive the tractor back there. I love the channel have a great new year.

Hi Evan, have you given much thought to an external wood boiler to augment your either primary or secondary heat/hot water source. I used to have a propane fired heat/ hot water source with the backup system was our electric hot water heater in case the propane boiler was to ever go out for whatever reason. We lived in a very rural area of Northern Michigan on the Lake Huron coast. So if something was beyond my capability (I am a ME by the way) electrically, it may be easily out of my reach unlike yourself. I love taking this journey along with your family and critter raising. I check in when I am able, and love to see you pull all of these tasks together thanks again! Take care, Steve
