I have a one acre pond in upstate ny and the large mouth bass don’t give my yellow perch a chance at all. I will be adding about 30 lbs of fathead minnows in the spring to take some pressure of the yp

Nice! What size largemouth bass did you stock? Do you have any structure in the pond? I’ve started adding old Christmas trees to add some semi-temporary structure to the pond. I also have some piles of old cement blocks for structure. This pond is 16ft at the deepest. I also intend to supplement the current Fathead minnows with additional stockings yearly.

Instead of trees I used 5 gallon buckets with pex lines running thru it with about 4 inches of concrete on the bottom , it made it look like an artificial tree ,to many snags with the real trees . My pond had large 6 pound lmb in the pond already , only one time so far in 14 years i added some new ones in pond

We enjoy eating the black crappie (12to 15inch) and we also enjoy blue gill(10 inch) also this year I put in golden shiners from Anderson fish farms (3inch)

Also if I was to do it all over again i would give it another year before putting the bass in , let the yp and minnows get established . I used oak pallets wrapped in 1 inch plastic chicken wire Sunk in 3 ft of water for the fat heads to breed in. In the 14 years I had the pond I made some mistakes but the pond. Now produces some nice fish all around. If u ever buy a fish feeder stick with Texas hunter and I use tractor supply fish food

@@ajp368 I've thought about the snags - I'll probably do a few of the pex trees you described as well - they'll last longer and have fewer snags.

What size perch did you put in? I'm thinking about getting some 4-6 inch yellow perch for our lake that lost probably 90% of its fish in a fish kill last year.
@johnsangl Жыл бұрын
5-7” was the ordered size. There were a few 8”+ though. Sorry to hear about the fish kill- too warm?
@redneckmini14 Жыл бұрын
@@johnsangl A company came and installed an aeration system for us and fired it up when we weren't there and never gave us any instructions on adapting it to the lake. Most of the fish were dead or dying within 24 hours. Still have some crappie, bluegill, bass, and a carp, but no confirmed catfish sightings. We estimate we lost over 2,000 fish out of a 3 acre lake.

I looked up the drain that you installed in the last video and saw how they are used in agricultural fields to manage ground water levels. Is that what you use to fill the pond, or do you use the drain to take water out of the pond when it gets too high? Thanks for the video.
@johnsangl Жыл бұрын
I use the drain to draw down pond levels when I’m expecting flooding situations. The pond fills with watershed of about 10-15 acres. No springs.

Nice looking Perch. What is your water source for the Pond ?

Watershed of 10-15 acres from my chestnut orchard and forested land. No springs.

@@danhealyeverythingoutdoors7105 Water seems great! None of the runoff receives chemicals so it should be good. I own the top of the hill so I can control what chemicals/fertilizer the pond might see from upstream sources!
