I think personally the top 2 (for POTY) is Palmer and Foden. Foden being the main man for a title winning side when KDB has been injured all season and Haaland hasn’t necessarily performed well in every game. Foden is no longer the luxury player you bring on at 60 mins when city are 2-0 up, he’s the guy that when you are losing he’ll score an outrageous goal to equalize. Personally, and maybe it’s just Chelsea Bias but Cole Palmer, 22 goals and 10 assists in your DEBUT season as a starter in the prem and if you include the city games he has 41 G/A in all competitions. In the first half of the year Chelsea were 11th and to turn it around and actually finish with European football (especially when everyone doubted that would happen). If we talk about moments I mean, the Chip against Everton to complete his second home hattrick, the last minute goal against Man United to beat them, the Last minute penalty against City to draw the game, The assist against Brentford to draw that game and more. What weakens the case for Palmer is that Chelsea aren’t fighting for the league or even in a Champions league spot but I don’t think that should take too much away from the POTY case.

Player of the Year is all about narratives and biases, and little to do with who the best player truly has been. Odegaard is Arsenal's best player by a mile, I don't see him getting nominated ahead of the likes of Rice. Bernardo Silva and Rodri are far better and more important players than Foden, in my opinion, and they hardly get a mention (especially Silva). I'm not even a huge Salah fan, but let's not pretend he wasn't getting mentions for potential POTY until very recently. Let's face it, if you're English, you already have a leg up on nearly everyone else. If it's me, I'm giving it to Rodri, all day.
@edenholt4394
@edenholt4394 Ай бұрын
I’m a city fan and I agree, Rodri is pretty clearly the obvious pick. As special as Foden is, Rodri feels utterly irreplaceable in our team and the results when he’s been missing has reflected that. I do think you may be undermining Foden slightly though, if you watch the spurs game he’s directly contributed to both goals and he’s been brilliant all season there’s no denying that really. Bernardo’s a little different, his attacking output doesn’t come close but his work rate and ability to retain the ball and recycle play makes him very unique, it’s going to be very hard replacing him this summer if he leaves 😓

I don't care if Foden wins the double - YPotY is kinda random and whatever. But it's a bit of a logical fallacy to argue he shouldn't based on Haaland not winning it last season. Based on Haaland not winning the double, neither should Bale have. But he did. Haaland not winning the double was an obvious mistake so we shouldn't use that mistake for reference for future cases of potential doubles

Love the podcast! I actually think put aside him leaving and all that stuff, but Klopp deserves a mention, not manager of the season but think have you ever seen a manager change a whole midfield 3 in one window and then be in a title race for 90% of the season, not to mention major injuries during the season to big players Alisson, Trent, Jota, Robertson and Salah… Fair play to Klopp especially after where they were last season

Palmer being dismissed cuz of his team is unfair to him and the work he has put in this season. It’s an award for the best player in the league. His consistency, performances and output should not be overlooked because his team didn’t challenge for the title. That’s not his fault.
@omar_u29
@omar_u29 Ай бұрын
Further, you can't say Palmer hasn't had the moments but Foden has. Seems like for them the moments have to be PL title charge related since I can name as many if not more moments for Palmer who's singlehandedly won almost 50% of Chelsea's points this season.
@TP-pq9xx
@TP-pq9xx Ай бұрын
I mean it literally is Palmer's fault that his team wasn't challenging for the title because he chose to joint that team instead of fighting for his place at City.

Lyes needs to let go of this rookie of the year idea. It doesn't work with academies and players slowly getting brought into the team. If they were to do that Mainoo wouldn't be eligible to win it next year. Just make it 21 at the beginning of the season. Problem solved. Edit: Watching Cams poke further holes in the idea is killing me.

On the championship point at the end, I don't think the gap is as big as you've hinted at it being. This last season it looks bigger since you had three prem level squads coming down (Especially Leeds and Leicester). But next season, with in my opinion more championship level squads coming down, it will be alot closer. Granted Burnley and Luton will still battle for autos and playoffs, but the gap between them and a West Brom, Cov or us (Boro) isn't too big. Also you've got teams like Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth that have been able to make a space for themselves in the Prem whilst being behind more established prem names financially. All it takes is the right recruitment and a committed manager imo.

I like Isak. I’ve always liked Isak. I have been rooting for him ever since his professional debut at the age of 16, but it’s been 8 years since then. Sure, you can argue that he’s still young, but not young _enough_ imo. Bro is literally turning 25 in september I think they should lower the age limit or make it a “rookie of the year” type of thing

Dismissing Palmer for POTY cus he hasn't had 'moments' like Foden isn't right for me. He's singlehandedly won Chelsea 50 odd percent of their points, scored b2b home hattricks, performed consistently all season. New team in his first PL season. Highest GA, second highest scorer, second in most GA in Europe in 2024 behind Vini, breaking records. The same way you said Foden stepped up when they needed him, Chelsea have needed him every game and he's stepped up.

@@omar_u29 It's really not that complicated. For example if Palmer scores the only goal in a 1-0 win that's not him singlehandedly winning the game, the defensive line and GK still had to keep the other team from scoring, etc.

Palmer has been the b3st individual. Palmer has broken records for Chelsea during one of their most unstable periods. Foden doesn't lead City in goals or assists. They'd be in a title race without him. Chelsea would be below 10th if they didn't have Palmer.

Unpopular opinion.. look I know Foden is a good player but maybe it's just me but I feel he is a bit overrated. A lot of his goals are results of positional placement in front of goal where his team gets him the ball in ideal scoring situations. Basically exactly what Halaand did last year. So now Foden gets those opportunities in games instead. Ollie Watkins does way more on a lesser team but doesn't get the love Foden receives. You can take Foden out City and they'd be in the same place this season with another player putting up the same stats as him.
