These last years BAFTA does nothing for the season. They are a thing of their own, more concerned with honouring local talent than predicting Oscars. As they should, it is a British gala after all.

I think The Whale is now solidly expected to get a best picture nomination! I’m hoping Tar gets some wins here so it becomes a real dark horse contender to win best picture.

@@guimaraespadilha it’s the favorite for actor (only reason it ever wasn’t was because people mistakenly thought the film would be weak), and now a real contender for screenplay (that it got the nom and Glass Onion, Top Gun, and Women Talking did not is huge; I suspect All Quiet will win BAFTA, but I don’t see it winning the Oscar, so The Whale is in a great position), it’s one of the top two in makeup (I think Elvis wins, but it is close), and very likely to get a supporting actress nom (I wish Chau was in the winning conversation, but sadly that seems like a stretch). With all of that, it seems very likely it gets one of the ten best picture nominations.

I think Gina's best director is somewhat a fluke but still a pleasant surprise. Don't think it'll translate to the oscar tho. She got bafta and critics (with 9 other nominees)

I think it may actually be technically more difficult to produce a British film that doesn't get nominated for a BAFTA than to get a nomination. When you're nominating 10 SPECIFICALLY British films it isn't much of an honor to be nominated considering the size of the British film industry.

I don’t think you understand what is the BAFTs are for shining light on British filmmakers. The IFTAs it’s a much smaller market it’s only 7 1/2 million people yet. It shines the light on a lot of young Irish talent. Jamie Dornan, Sarah Green, Michael Fassbender and the Irish language film The Quiet Girl

glad The Fabelmids barely got anything. I hate that we're suppose to love it and act like it's top tier cinema just because Spielberg directed it. Sorry but even Spielberg has to be subjected to criticism. This movie was not his best and neither was WSS.
