In this video we discuss how to calculate the price of charging your Chevrolet Bolt at home as well as how much it is compared to gasoline. We also discuss the Bolt fires and the different statistics with vehicle fires. Lastly (or firstly in the video) we talk about the hesitation some people are having in regards to electric vehicles.

Great tutorial and exactly the experience we have from our Bolt.Really cheap to run at 12cents per kWh. A fifth of the cost of a gas car. The Bolts are absolutely a GM Gem!

"When I finally parked it(Bolt) at my home charging station, it had gone 322 miles on a single charge. Not bad for a car rated at 238 miles per charge. Even more impressive was the fact that I didn't really try very hard to get that many miles out of it. I spent plenty of time in traffic, which helped, but there were a few sections that I was moving along at 65-70 mph as well. No matter how you look at it, 322 miles out of a Bolt is pretty impressive." - Ed Hellwig Edmund's

I live in a part of the country where I see heat and extreme cold. Just coming out of a cold snap here and my 2023 Bolt EUV takes a hit in the extreme cold. Around 150 miles of range when it is below zero. I am not complaining or anything, but just a statement of fact. Also, fact is that 150 miles still works for most people most of the time. And it way exceeds my daily needs, so I am not worried. Just a good thing to know.

@@1975lap my CT6 2.0E plug-in was down to 25 miles of EV range and 26 mpg on the 2.0T. It is usually 45 miles of EV and almost 40 mpg on gas.

@@normt430 Oh yes. ICE cars are hit by the cold too. My wife's Subaru Forester is 30 mpg on her route in the summer and 22 in the cold. Her's is 75% and my EV is 65% in the cold. Financially my EV still wins hands down though.

For my family’s use case an EV makes sense - we really do small trips in the city here, and the car will be parked in the garage every single night. Our 2023 Bolt EUV redline is scheduled to start being built this week and I can’t wait!

I just traded my Bolt for a Tesla Model 3. The only reason I traded it was the Bolt's charging speed was not quite fast enough for long road trips. It was great for me during the pandemic when I wasn't traveling. I charge at home and drove the Bolt about 600 miles a month, which only cost about $17. Electricity is 11.3 cents/kWh where I live. It was fun to drive, quick as a rabbit and almost no maintenance. I highly recommend them.

I have a 2021 bolt premiere version and I have to say you're pretty much right on, on use case. We are a two person 2 car family both of us retired. Most of our daily driving is in the bolt, which is much cheaper to run than my Wife's Lincoln SUV. We only use the SUV when we travel or when we don't ride together. We have never needed to charge the bolt anywhere but at home. I have owned the bolt for 16 months and have 23k miles of trouble free driving.

Great video. I picked up my 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV recently. I’ve been reading that it’s healthier for the battery to be charged to 80% capacity. My question is I have to be outta town for a week. I’ll be leaving it at 70% and here’s my main concern. My garage gets in the 95 degree range at times. Would you leave it parked outside the garage if you were me (for a week), or would you feel comfortable having it parked inside the garage?

My wife and I are newbie Bolt owners. I did a considerable amount of research before buying our Bolt. The first thing I found was the Chevy dealer in our town (Lakeport CA) was pretty clueless as to info on the Bolt. The dealer we bought it from was somewhat better because our salesman was simi-versed in "electrospeak", but I spent hours online with videos similar to yours. I have over 100 saved videos on the Bolt and how to survive it. It is my firm belief that GM should hire guys like me to install "Bolt knowledge" in folks that purchase one of these supercars. In the end, I accrued more knowledge than the dealer or shop personnel AND I am still finding things about these cars that surprise me! If you like a challenge, you will love these cars.

I bought a used 2017 Bolt because the free charging at work negated the payment and there was virtually no maintenance required. When they did the huge recall I sold it back to them. I drove it for 50K miles over two years and they paid me 3K more than I bought it for. So I picked up a cheap Volt that gets me ALMOST to work on electricity. So yes I need 8 gallons of gas every 4-5 weeks...both are awesome vehicles.

My father's van caught fire inside the cabin with us all in it. It was a 70s van, The fire was INSIDE THE CABIN! I was recently driving behind a car on the highway was was burning on the bottom. I tried to follow him and let him know, but he took an exit. On Li ion batteries, when I charge them, Especially cheap products, I charge them on surfaces that can't catch fire, and away from things that are above them that can catch fire. This goes especially for my Mower and trimmer batteries, even though they have been fine for five years.

Agree, once you drive EV, going back to ICE is difficult. I got my BOLT EUV 2023 last week. Love the quietness of the cabin and smooth ride. I am charging in the driveway for a month as a caution. Then I will start charging inside the garage. If someone is really skeptical, I would advise them to use extension cord, run it through the gaps on the side of the garage door and charge it in the drive way. Unless someone is driving 200 miles a day you can charge EV after coming to office for a few hours on the driveway and then park the car inside. That should give peace of mind from fire risk.

I remember about 8+ years ago reading an article in a reputable auto magazine noting that EVs would eventually replace most combustion engine vehicles sold in the US, but for most, to likely wait until the mid 2030s to buy. So far, I think this outlook may prove about right. No need to be a first adopter before then.

OK, so I just picked up my Bolt EUV premier in Mosiac Black with a Black/Blue interior pleather, it was 38,500 MSRP, Rotolo Chevrolet in Fontana, California sold it to me for MSRP. Surprisingly, they didn’t nag me about any all of the unneeded extras such as ceramic coating, extended warranties, or any other crap add-ons. So far, I have 12K in rebates/GM discounts and I am still looking for more cash back. I ended up getting my car for net 26,500 + tax/fees, I’m happy. It can be done for a good price, it took me about a month and a half to wait for the car, etc., and I think it’s going to be worth it in the long run. I hated the idea of spending upwards of $60,000 on a way overpriced Tesla (so Elon can, “Occupy Mars”, I think that’s so foolish when we have so many more pressing issues down on earth, but I digress) that was still just going to get me from A to B, it seems like such a waste of money to be so “high-tech”.

Love your videos, remember that the more electric you use the more per kw you pay, look at your electric bill, there are step up charges over 600 kw per month (summer) and I believe 1K kw (winter), so you could be paying more than the base rate. In other words, you have the AC on, pool pump, charging the electric cars you rate will go up. I would look into an EUV, especially that we have free charging at work !

Good morning! I have been watching some of your videos, and enjoy them very much. They have given me a lot of information in regards to the Chevy Bolt. But there are still a lot of things I'd like to know before I will think about buying one. I have been looking at the EV's from Nissan, Hyundai, And now I'm looking at the Chevy Bolt. I like some of the writes up on it, but still not sure about how it would work for me. I live in Pahrump Nevada. It's a small town about 70 to 80 miles outside of Vegas. If I was looking for just a around town car, an older Nissan leaf with a 30 to 50 mile range would be great. But if I'm going to spend up to $35,000+ on a new vehicle, It's has to give me more then the ability to get me around town. So I have a few questions for you "How do you feel the Chevy Bolt would handle a: 1) 170 to 200 mile round trip into Vegas from Pahrump a couple times a week? 2) The "Heat" of over 110 to 115 degrees during the summer months? 3) The "Cold" during the winter where we get down to upper 20's to lower 30's? 4) Taking the hills going from Pahrump into Vegas using either the 160 to the 95 into Vegas, or the 160 to Blue Diamond Rd into Vegas? 5) Over time, what is the normal estimate deterioration loss of the batter over 1 to 5 years? (in miles" and "percent") 6) At what point of time, or mileage to you see the biggest lose of battery storage? 7) Given that the battery's have a warranty, at what deterioration level would the battery have to be, where the battery would be replaced under warranty? 8) And if the vehicle was in an accident, would it "Cancel" all warranty for the bolts battery? Please, I need your Honest opinion. The EV or EUV I get has to be able to give me I feel, at least a 200 mile range over the course of it's life. If the Heat, Cold, or driving up and down these hills hills will drop my estimated miles to below that, I don't think it would work for me. Maybe you can make a video answering these questions. lol Well I think I've taken way to much of your time!! You take care, and always stay safe!!!! Robert Soreda from Pahrump Nevada!! A great place to live!!!

@Dave B - Thank you for the video. The statistics you gave about vehicles catching on fire: are thos total vehicles fires from, say accidents? With the price drops they could be under $30k for the 2023 Bolt EVs, plus the tax credit as of 1/1/2023 (which may be $3750 or $7500… but that won’t be a point of sale credit until 2024 because it’ll take time for dealers to have the ability to calculate and credit that, so if you buy in 2023 the credit applies to your 2023 taxes when you file in 2024.) Thankfully my FIL retired from GM so I should be able to get a Bolt under $30k even with a few add ons via his discount but, still, it is doable without that discount in theory. Keep in mind that you’ll be saving a LOT of money in gas as well, so a slightly higher car payment may not mean more for your transportation budget (ymmv, literally!)

This required the mounting screws in the wall to be located at exactly the correct distance from the outlet so that the plug could just slide into the outlet. It's almost impossible to do this. I ended up mounting the charger to a board, plugging it in, then attaching the board to the wall. This worked perfectly and when it's plugged in can't be lifted off of the mounting screws. The Bolt's charger has two charge rates when charging from a 120V outlet. Eight amps (4mi/hr) and twelve amps (6mi/hr). Household outlets protected by a 15A breaker should only use the (default) 8A charge rate to account for loads from other outlets on that circuit. This may still overload the circuit depending on what else is connected to it. My detached garage with its single outlet is on a separate 20A circuit which allows me to use the higher 12A charge rate with the voltage at the outlet remaining within UL specifications. My 2023 Bolt's estimated 220+ miles with the battery charged to only 80% is enough to support any one day round trip I would make. I'm very happy with it.

So informative. My one question is about towing. I’m about to trade my beloved 2021 CrossTrek in for a 2023 Bolt EUV. I have a small hobby farm and I haul hay and shavings with my CrossTrek with a utility trailer. Did the same with several Priuses. The Bolt EUV is rated to tow 2000 lbs, more than my CrossTrek. Is that for real? Obviously I won’t haul that much, but I do have a little 800 on camper.

Another great video Dave. Very informative. Can you tell me should I charge my battery at home with level 2 to 100% or does charging your battery to 100% shorten the life of the battery? Thank you
@mykleraymond3700
@mykleraymond3700 Жыл бұрын
All batteries are reported to do better when they are not charged 100%, and not discharged to zero. They also do better when not LEFT fully charged or drained. Especially during temperature extremes. I have an app on my phone that alerts me when the charge reaches 80% and I usually disconnect the charger well before it reaches full. So it is more about the care and feeding of your vehicle battery. The phone battery can bloat if I have it fully charged and sitting in the heat. My Bolt is set to charge to 80%. I try to recharge when it gets down to 20-25% (easy when you have a home charger). IF your daily use of your vehicle allows, it is better to avoid the extremes of charging. If you are planning to leave on a drive where you need the maximum range, and you set your charger to reach a full charge shortly before you depart, then charging to 100% is fine. A long trip requires planning, so you are expecting to reach chargers without cutting it too closely (or are willing to slow down and turn off accessories that use a lot of power so you extend your range). That means that you may not be charging fully at each stop (DC charging to 70-80% is relatively easy, but not to 100%). I expect my vehicle battery capacity to be reduced over the life of the car, but probably not by much. Charging regularly to 100% may affect the capacity even more, but again probably not by much. My opinion is that the batteries require some care over the life of the car. You don't want to abuse it, but you don't need to baby it either.

I guess that I'm lucky. I went to the GM dealership last Saturday in Jackson, MS, and asked if they have any Bolts. They have a ghost gray LT1 coming for just under 30K before tax. $1,000 deposit paid, and the car will be here in 2-3 weeks. I was told that they have a wait list for the EUV.

I never ever thought I'd buy a GM product, I loved Toyotas, but the Bolt sold me. My Lt EUV was built over a week ago, and I can hardly wait for it to ship so I can end giving money to the oil companies. I'll be charging from home mostly. Where I live, my 264 miles of commuting per week will cost $10 in the summer, and about $15 in the winter. Having said that, EVs are not for everyone yet, but I think they could be in ten years, as the technology is advancing rapidly.

I have driven a Bolt, and really liked it. Unfortunately, it was just too much money. In addition, my wife hates the quietness. I had a Fiesta ST that I loved but had to get rid of because I couldn't control my enthusiasm. I just bought a 2015 Chevy Spark EV with 55,000 miles used for $12,500, and I love it. It reminds me of the Fiesta, without the extreme craziness. We have 3 other gas cars in our household, so I don't mind the very short range (60 miles now that it is 7 years old). My only regret is I didn't buy it 2 years ago when they were much cheaper.

I try and look at EV from a middle ground. I love the technology behind EV. I also look at it from point of Hating to worry about never knowing what gas prices are. And being dependent on gas companies. The bolt EUV is really what I'm looking at for its cost. It really seems to be a great affordable vehicle. It will be my first. But my ultimate goal is install enough solar/windmill to generate power to charge over night for the EV.

Great video The issue I see is initial cost. How much more $ does a EV cost to purchase vs a gas model? How many miles must you do to recoup that initial purchase. I also understand that some EVs have rebates but those rebates are not $ off purchase. They are only used when doing annual taxes to offset what you owe to IRS.

I am going to make a cost video between the Bolt EUV and a Chevy Trax and/or Trailblazer since they are similarly sized. One benefit here in NJ is you do not pay sales tax on an EV.. that alone saves the buyer a couple thousand.

@TrainsFerriesFeet
@TrainsFerriesFeet Жыл бұрын
Most EVs have 10 year/100,000 mile warranties. No car is worth much at 10+ years. That's just the warranty, it doesn't mean the battery won't be usable beyond that.

Great question, Scott. I'm seeing from some quick searches, the battery replacement prices range between $16k - $19k with labor included. Chevy's battery warranty states 8 years/100k miles, which ever comes first. I'm also seeing the Bolt's battery lasts an average of 3 - 5 years. This is highly disconcerting as I commute 70 miles round trip for work, and with leisure travel mileage on top, my warranty will be up before 5 yrs. That's $50k total for a Bolt ownership. Might as well get a Tesla Model 3, as it guarantees a 70% battery charge capacity after the warranty expires, which is also 8yrs/100k miles. Plus with a Tesla, you're getting more range, faster charging, superior charging infrastructure, and the all important cool-factor. I was all for the Bolt until looking up the battery warranty. IMO, a true-valued, get-the-job-done EV has yet to be created. Infuriating.
