Don't know if else mentioned this, but the 2022 model will now have the brake lights on when you come to a complete stop with one pedal driving. I have a 2019 bolt in shock color.

Wow - I have the 2022 and did not know that. I usually put my foot on the brake when stopped in traffic and I use 1-pedal driving all the time. I seldom ever touch the brake otherwise. Thanks for sharing that info.

Unless the car actually applies the brake while stopped, you still would probably want to push the brake pedal when not moving. If not moving you will lose 0 of the calipers (since nothing is rubbing when not moving) and if you get rear-ended, the brakes help reduce how far you move after being hit. It could mean the difference between hitting the car in front or not, or getting hit by intersection cross-traffic or not. It is good to know though that the new bolts still light the brake lights when stopped.

I've been driving a Bolt for about a year now. The video is spot on about regenerative braking. I do all of my driving in L, I hardly use the brake pedal at all. Even stopping at a red light at the bottom of a steep hill, I can still do all or almost all of it on regen. One cool regen demo I would have liked to see in the video, is regen under cruise control. Unlike a gas car, the Bolt will actually regen while cruising down a hill, keeping your speed exactly what you set it at, rather than allowing gravity to accelerate you faster and faster. I have done this several times, and it's wonderful.

I bought and received my Bolt EUV Jan 11, 2023 and put about 200 miles on it. Basically I’ll drive anywhere for any reason just to drive it. I’ve found that one pedal driving is very natural and easy to learn. You point out that the break lights do come on when you let up on the accelerator so that’s good to know. I’m watching you drive on all these busy highways in New Jersey that brings back memories from when I lived, worked and vacationed there. It shows me that you are comfortable on the highway surrounded by traffic and trucks. Our biggest highway trip these days is to visit family in Charlotte and time on I-85 and I-485 is very hectic in the CRV but I am looking forward to driving the Bolt as soon as I can assure myself that I can get charged up on the Charlotte end of the trip. The Rea Farms Hyatt has 4 plugs and others are being installed so I’m thrilled to see the EV infrastructure growing. I’ve been driving new Hondas for 40 years. Yes, they are great cars, no complaints But I am so thrilled to be driving a Chevy and jumping into an EV. This car is smooth as silk and solid as a rock. I love it. My wife loves it and at this point I plan to stay with Chevy from now on. Thanks gain for your videos!

The Bolt, even with its slow charging, seems to be a truly excellent little car, a great value. We’re looking to get the EV in the 2LT trim package, but we’d really like it in the ice blue color, and there seems to be hardly left in the entire country. We’re in Northern NJ and actually checked the stock at Schumacher and unfortunately you don’t appear to have any, but we do appreciate the videos. And yeah, what the @%!$# is the deal with the Turnpike extension?! By the time it’s actually finished, cars will be obsolete and we’ll all be flying around in transportation drones, looking at the extension and saying “how quaint! a road!” 😂

In D you can coast more and it is easier in D to slow down gradually, which is more efficient. Mode L requires you to put just the right pressure on the pedal to maintain a speed or slow down gradually. I like L mode in the city or in heavy traffic on the freeway. I drive a 17 Bolt LT. On quiet roads that don't have too many tight turns, I prefer D mode and use cruise control a lot.

I just bought a 2022 Bolt EUV over the weekend after doing a TON of research. I test drove 2 Bolt EUVs before the purchase and used one-pedal driving for probably a total of 5 minutes. I LOVE how intuitive it is. Takes some getting used to, like a brake with different sensitivity than you're used to, but quite easy to just pick up. I've been driving one-pedal exclusively so far (I use cruise control on the freeway so I don't have to keep the pedal pressed in).

Here's another lovely thing about EV's that most people might not think about: the huge torque output, even when the car is barely moving, allows you to crawl up steep driveways into your garage, either forward or backward, with perfect control, at speeds far slower even than normal walking speed. If you have a steep driveway approach to your garage or carport, and you have a tight fit to get through the garage doors, like maybe you actually have 2 cars parked in your 2 car garage, you will LOVE an EV. You will never want to have to park a regular car up that driveway again, especially one with a manual transmission, if you still have one. BTW, there are several videos on KZbin from Professor John Kelly at Weber State University in Utah, showing "deep dives" into the 2017 Bolt they have, including total dissassembly of the traction battery, the Motor Drive unit, and the main power inverter. If you are thinking of buying a Bolt, you might find these to be interesting. Professor Kelly was impressed enough with the Bolt after stripping one to the last nut and bolt, that he bought one. I have a question about cruise control (speed control), which I assume the Bolt does have. Is it "intelligent" cruise control, that uses doppler radar to sense if you are getting too close behind the vehicle ahead of you, and automatically slows the car to maintain a safe clearance, then speeds back up to your set point automatically when traffic speeds up again?

Bolt EUV Premiere can get adaptive cruise control with one of the option sets. I really wanted adaptive cruise control, so... it is pretty sweet. It works like you were hoping it does. detects slowing, matches speed. if car in front pulls away, it nicely picks your speed up, too. or, you can add some "extra encouragement" on your own, and it does not disengage the adaptive cruise control, even if you get going over the currently set target speed. it greatly reduces one's attention load up to dense, but flowing, traffic. my periodic drives between Portland OR and Bellingham WA on I5 are quite a bit less mentally draining using it, compared to my previous car.

Great video about one of the best things that EVs have. Maybe we can get one with all the great features that you get with an EV. The first one is since you have 80% less moving parts. No oil changes. No transmission oil change. Now you do have gear box fluid change but 100k plus. Tires rotations 7500 miles. The list keeps going. We got an EV not because of the environment. But it's a major plus. No gas, we mostly charge at home. And there is a very big misinformation about trips and DCFC. We will not be going back to any ice.

I take a trip once a month, which is 207 miles. I wouldn't try it without stopping to do a partial charge and I don't want to add 30 minutes to this trip. Great video! I have been driving my 2020 Bolt for nearly two years. The only other benefit to regenerative braking not mentioned is how well it performs in snow. Rather than worry about breaking in a combustion vehicle and maintaining control, when the EV is in low gear, lifting the foot from the throttle, the car smoothly slows down. Happy Independence Day!

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed watching/listening to your video. I too own a 2019 bolt (premium). After receiving the new battery pack the last 8 charges from my stage 2 charging system has shown 599km and switching to miles is around 370 miles. I realize it also depends what part of the country you are from. (Victoria British Columbia Canada). It is frustrating to hear so many videographer’s just repeat what they read without checking further. Also, because I love the Bolt so much I have ordered the 2022 Bolt EUV Premiere which should be arriving within the week. I didn’t bother getting super cruise as most of the roads I will be driving don’t have the divided highway. I always look forward to checking out what you have to say next. Cheers from Victoria.

I agree with Dave, the Bolt's regenerative braking is great. I have a charging station at home and electricity costs 11.3 cents per kWh where I live. For the 600 miles or so that I drive each month, it only costs about $17 in electricity. The only negatives about the Bolt are the DC Fast Charging speed compared to other EVs and the seat comfort on long trips. It is a great commuter car.

You expressed yourself magnificently. This is a great video for those who have no knowledge of EV’s. GM is not the only car brand that has one pedal driving. Regenerative braking is an excellent way to save money on brakes. As an early adapter, my 2011 Nissan Leaf had 66,000 miles on the vehicle with 6mm on the original brake pads 11 years later. Owning an electric car will save the buyer at least 50% over a gasoline powered car. The Bolt at $25,000 is a good value, as long as you don’t live in an apartment complex. A home garage, and a 240 charger solve all the shortcomings that are present in colder winter or hotter summer conditions. I am not a salesman, I am a long term EV owner who can verify .03 cents per mile operating costs. From the west coast.

And yes, I think GM has really done a great job with regenerative braking, torque, the paddle, one pedal driving, etc., and as a result given us a great mix of efficiency and fun factor in their EV's. The original brake pads on my 2016 Volt lasted over 150k miles before they needed to be replaced.

The Bolt is the most perfect 2nd family car. I would not recommend it for a single person who even sometimes goes on road trips. But if you have either a gas car, PHEV, or a Tesla as your road trip car-nothing and I mean nothing beats a Bolt for a commuter car or a 2nd family car.

As much gas as I have to burn for work, this will practically pay the monthly lease payment in fuel savings every 2-3weeks. The only catch with the bolt is the relatively slow Fast charge capabilities, but at it's price point I don't see a real competitor and ~30min to add 100miles is enough to serve my needs most of the time.

Thanks for this amazingly informative video intended for folks that have never driven the Bolt or any EV. You drive yours exactly the same way I drive mine. I think the Bolt's regenerative braking is the most intuitive out of all the EVs I"ve driven. And I'm really impressed that the rotors have virtually no rust. I watched this video prior to buying my 2022 Bolt EV, and I even tried using one-pedal driving on my 3 test drives. Now I use it 100% of the time and love it. I love how it accelerates to find a spot in traffic that I am most comfy with. My motorcycle accelerates like that and it's nice having a car that can do it. Even my sports car is not as quick, and it's doggone quick IMO. Of course the sports car handles better thru curves, etc, but this EV is awesome so far. I hate it does not have Homelink, so I had to buy a clicker remote for my garage. I hope GM adds that in the near future. I really love the tech too. Our 2020 Cadillac XT5 Premium Luxury has some really nice tech, but I think the Bolt is better in some ways. People should go test drive one of these (if they can find one that's available). They can thank me later.

@@ValConB My 2 ICE cars are automatic and it is a little confusing once you are used to 1-pedal driving. But you acclimate yourself quickly back to the ICE style. It just makes you appreciate 1-pedal driving more. It's just easier IMO, but my wife chooses NOT to use it when in the EV. To each their own I guess.

Owned it for 5 years and had an emergency break issue that wore out a rear rotor. Mechanically, it was a very sound and well put together car. In 2014, I traded it for an Equinox LTZ. (Long story - divorce came through and I had to downsize and sell most of my stuff.) The Equinox has 140,000 miles on it and has cost me just gas and oil changes. Honestly, it's the best car I've ever owned! V6 engine and AWD and it still gets 24 MPG on the highway. I bought a Camaro SS in 2020. (Mid-life crisis car. 🤣 ) What I am trying to say is that GM makes great cars. I went through some of those bad 80's and 90's cars, and I understand your hesitation to buy GM again. But, I've gotta tell you that GM (Chevy for me) is making great vehicles again. No one's perfect, as recalls happen all around, but I have had no problems with any of my Chevys. So, I have a 2023 Bolt EUV on order now. I can't wait to go "electric" and see how much fun this car will be for me. It's going to make my commute a little easier, and a whole lot cheaper. So, did my testimonial work? 😉

Thanks for your testimonial. I'd like to see faster charging in the Bolt EUV. Guess you can't get everything all at once. From my limited in-person experiences (friend's car, fleet cars) GM quality seems good. I hope you got a fair price from your dealer.

@@dannyize , the DC Fast charging is a bit slow, but I heard that GM engineers went with the slower DC charging speeds to extend the life of the batteries. Degredation (SP?) is very low for these batteries from what I'm researching, so it might be worth the slower charging in the long run. I know that will make it more of a commuter car, but I'm going to road test mine after I get it. (P.S. - I managed to get it at MSRP with the $6,300 price reduction and no Market Adjustment, so I'll take it as a win, for now.)

@@dannyize The fundamental key here is to get a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV or 2023 Chevy Bolt EV factory custom build order configured when it becomes available on the Chevy website starting in or around November 2022 and then print out that build and take it down to a six or so local Chevy dealers to take a test drive and negotiate a best independent Chevy dealer to dealer competitive agreed upon selling price with each individual Chevy dealer before agreeing to signing, submitting and locking in a legally contractual binding agreement with a legally binding $500 contractual enforceable deposit signed by both the dealership owner and salesman handling that specific factory custom build order with one's final "best dealer" chosen individual chosen Chevy dealer and make sure you get a paper copy of this mutual agreement and also take a picture of the mutual agreement with ones smartphone to prevent it from being inadvertently potentially modified later on also as well by taking the precaution of taking a photographic proof that also has the time and date stamped also as well along with the prominent legally binding signatures of both the dealership owner and sales person; no signature alternative substitutions would be valid since this is a legally binding document; any attempt to prevent the customer from retaining both a legally enforceable physical binding copy or taking a photographic smartphone proof copy; should be sufficient terms and conditions to levy a written valid registered business complaint against the regional chevy franchisor assisgned representative; make sure one retains all copies of written and oral communications(via smartphone recording) also as well to backup proof of claims of written breach of contract terms and conditions.

Where i live here in northern quebec we have to use our break one day in the week because there is building rust if you dont use it and it comes fast. I saw friends that had to change break and rotor just because of that, I'm a very proud owner of a 2018 chevy volt listed around here at 31k on today's market paied 24k last fall. Used to drive most of that route when going Rochester to NYC but in my old ICE not my Bolt, Now in the Bolt and I think about it, I not sure how long it has been since I used the brakes - always one pedal!

Brake question. When does our rear electronic brakes come into play ? My 2019 Bolt has 141, 000 km or 88,000 miles on it and I am having my rear brake pads and rotors changed this week. I rarely use my brakes and timing for stops and using the one peddle is just so easy to make stops at corners.

I already understood the basics of regenerative braking, but you answered my question of, why have the on demand paddle when you already have one pedal mode? Absolutely fascinating information that I never realized. General Motors should make this into a commercial! With the price reduction in the Chevrolet Bolt for 23, one should seriously reconsider something they put totally out of their mind. Problem is finding a Chevrolet dealer to order at MSRP.

Surprised you don't mention the awesome blended braking system in the Bolt EV. Because of them, you can choose how you want to drive the car without any penalties for range. You can use the one-pedal, the regen paddle, or the brake pedal like a traditional car and Bolt will still grab as much energy as possible. You can not out think this car for efficiency, and you don't have to change your driving style if you don't want to like some other auto makers (ahem, TESLA!).

yeah I did not hear him say that when you step on the brake pedal the car itself IS using regen to slow the car down as much as possible, and if the car is not stopping fast enough only then it applies the disk brakes the drawback to using one pedal driving is there is a limit to how fast the regen can stop the car, and if you need to stop faster then you have to move your foot to the brake pedal, and you can be lulled into a situation where you will have to slam on the brakes to stop in time - and your passengers will look at you like WTF?! also, when you pull the paddle to regen stop you are decelerating at the maximum regen force it can apply, and its doing all the braking with the front tires only - in the long run, if you do this all the time, you are going to wear out your front tires quickly - and if you use max regen in a corner or curve you are more likely to slide out if you take the turn too fast as you said: you cannot out perform the computer in the car for regen energy using L or the paddle - just drive in D, use the brakes like you normally would in an ICE car, and when you see traffic ahead slowing down or an intersection light is red, take your foot off the accelerator, the car will slow down more gradually, putting less wear on your front tires - and use the brake pedal as needed to burn off the last 10 to 20 mph to come to a stop - this will use the disk brakes just enough to keep them from constantly rusting over, and it will keep your calipers in good condition if you are using the cruise control the car is much smoother in D, when you cancel the cruise with the button, tapping the paddle, or tapping the brake to disengage it, the car comes out of cruise less 'jerky' than if you have it in L, where it instantly goes to max regen braking when you disable the cruise control with your foot off the accelerator

I still leave car in L (single peddle mode) while cruising so that if I do need a quicker deceleration, all I have to do is tap the brake, tap the regen paddle, OR cancel cruise control. If I don’t want the extra regenerative brakes, I just hold the accelerator pedal down 20% or so for a smooth transition from cruise to “one peddle mode.” ❤ my Bolt!

Good to know that the Bolt applies the brake lights when using regen. My Honda Clarity did not do this, making it unwise to use regen when in traffic. Side note, surprised you have to slow down so much at toll plazas. Our Pikepass system on Oklahoma turnpikes allows us to proceed through toll plazas at full highway speed.

For anyone driving a 2023 Bolt in -10°C (50°F), expect a 120km (74mi) loss in range. Currently I'm getting 316km (196mi) range in winter Temps. EVs in North America should be equipped with heat pump as standard at this point. Sort of like rear window defroster, only heatpump also benefits range in summer, as it's used for more efficient AC cooling.

A heat pump is slightly LESS efficient than a Bolt AC UNLESS the heat is going to the battery (which rarely is needed.) Yes, the cold weather drains battery with resistance air heater shaving 15-30% off your range. I use steering wheel and seat heaters for short trips and never use “hot air.” These use much less power, but it is actually more comfortable than breathing hot, dry air. I am usually “dressed for the cold” anyway if it is below 40°. When in Florida, I never use “hot air”, and get 4.7 miles / KWh (240 miles per monthly charge) even through this hot summer with AC. The AC cools fast because it isn’t fighting against a hot engine “under the hood!”

I know I'm late to the party but I enjoyed this video. With all the newer EVs, excepting Teslas, get less than 3miles per kilowatt hour and seeing 4.2 as your average just proves what a great job GM did with the Bolt. I've been driving a 2016 Spark EV for the last 4 years, and it's awesome but for the 82-mile range. I knew what I was getting but it's so fun to drive, with 327lb ft of torque. I'm looking forward to seeing the new Bolt, I just hope they don't make it larger. The Equinox EV is nice but much bigger of vehicle than I want.

That's the one thing that really impressed me about the Tesla was the one pedal driving. It was just a little weird taking a corner at first because I'm used to coasting around a corner. You have to keep your foot on the pedal through the turn. BTW.. Watch the McMurtry EV break the hillclimb record at Goodwood if you haven't seen it.
