It's been almost FOUR YEARS since we've done a long form review of the Elan Ripstick 88. It felt like a fun one to piggy-back off the recent Kore 93 review as both skis fall into the "lightweight all-mountain" category, yet feel very different.

i am glad that you guys mentioned condition appropriate skis.. when i used to race when i needed wax the most was when it got really cold.. the snow got really grippy.. granted getting that cold wax off was important when it wasn't cold but that isn't what i am talking about here.. i went skiing last Thursday and they had a couple inches of powder.. the powder helped hold the edge.. on the groomers it was ok.. i will say that on the flats i lost my speed instantly.. also the one mogul run i took i almost went head over heals a few times.. that was a combination of that sticky snow and having edges.. the top was closed and they might of opened it after i left but i was too cold to stay around.. infact it is Friday night and I still haven't warmed up.. i have been drinking lots of water and lots of powerade and it still seams like i can't get hydrated..

Guys, I just want to say a massive THANK YOU for this review (and all your other reviews!). I wavered between Wingman 82 (which I’ve skied before), Wingman 86 and the Ripstick 88, and your review was a large part of my decision to go with the Ripstick. What a ski! Just came back from a week in Val Thorens in pretty perfect conditions (albeit no actual snowfall) and they ripped! So much fun, I skied the best I’ve ever skied and had so much fun doing it. Every aspect of your review was absolutely spot-on. Sadly I wasn’t able to buy them from you as I’m in the UK, but if anyone is able to use your services, I’d have no hesitation in recommending - you guys definitely know your onions!

Another solid explanation. Just want to compliment Bob on some of the smoothest controlled skiing I have ever seen him do…those skis seem to work really well for you in fact better than the Head Kores I watched you ski. I understand that ‘can be abrupt’ moment from what Jeff was saying because of the flex but still performed almost perfectly in those solid conditions. Excited to try a pair when possible

I wanna compare these to my declivity’s. Great video guys!!
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
Hey Nick! That's actually a fun comparison! The shapes are quite similar. The Declivity Ti models feel stronger from that down-the-fall line, raw stability perspective. Even the 88 C feels maybe a touch stronger than the Ripsticks. There's not as big of a difference in torsional stiffness and grip, however. Then Ripsticks have that softer flex pattern, that ability to easily bend, which the Declivity doesn't necessarily have, or at least it's not as accessible. When I ski my Declivity 92 Ti, I find myself skiing faster and pushing my personal limits a little more, while when I ski the Ripsticks, I get that technical, work-on-my-technique-and-make-cool-turn-shapes experience. Hope that helps explain the differences.

So with this review, I think I’ve narrowed my choices to the Declivity 92 TI and either a Ripstick 88 or 96. I’d be curious your thoughts on the differences between the 88 and 96. I believe I recall from one of your 96 reviews that you found a 96 nearly as stable on hard pack as the 88 and just as easy to get to high edge angles. In fact, I think and one of you said you saw no reason to go to the 88 given the benefits of the wider under-foot for soft conditions. Am I remembering that correctly? Also, any changes to any of these 3 skis, other than graphics, for ‘23 vs ‘22?

Your last reviews feel like home for me 😃 Coming off a Kore 87, i just had my first 3 days of the season on the Ripstick 88. I felt that they ski a little short. On paper, the Ripstick has a 1 meter longer radius than my Kore, however, it didn't feel that way. I give the credit for that to the softer flex, allowing me to manipulate the turn shape easier. I came a day after ~15cm of fresh snow, so soft conditions on day one. Easily manageable, great ski to plow through all of the on piste conditions, but felt a little much off piste. Maybe a couple cm too much for the 88, but that's fair. Second day was much firmer, on the steeper sections with artificial snow, i also felt what Jeff said, the lack of top top end stability. Happened to me as well a couple times, but nothing that worried me, felt similiar to having a bit of too dull edges. These last, lets call it 5% top end stability, are more than made up by the versatility, quickness, accessibility and light weight. The third day was maybe 3cm of fresh snow on the groomers, and they worked absolutely perfect there. Pretty much what i was shopping for, a light, versatile utility ski for mixed conditions or conditions that i don't know. It feels they can do it all, and that's as much as you can wish for for a 88mm ski. I've also seen quite some people on the QST 92, and that worked great as well from what i can tell. Looking forward to that review.

Great video. Love the detail and all the information. I live on the East coast and have been skiing for 35 years. I’m now getting back out after not skiing for a couple years and am looking for new equipment. After a bunch of research, I’m down to the Elan Ripstick 88 and Renoun Endurance 88. I’m looking for a good all mountain ski. Most of my skiing will be on groomers, it love hitting the bumps and trees when conditions allow. Will also head out west occasionally. I’m 5’10” / 175lbs. Have you reviewed Renoun skis? What are your thoughts between the Endurance 88 and Ripstick 88?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
We haven't gotten a chance to review Renoun, but I really like the sound and look of their skis and technology. What I do know about the Ripstick 88 is that it's about as fun and versatile as it gets. Great on-trail carving performance for such a light ski, and then when you get into the bumps and trees, they're about as easy as it gets. I'd imagine there's more heft to the Renoun, but please don't quote me on that.

THANK YOU for these detailed reviews!! How would you compare these with the new Nordica Unleashed 98? Looking for an East Coast one-ski quiver that's fun in the bumps/trees but also rip groomers when needed. And how would Ripstick 96 fit in the conversation?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
The 96 fits better in that conversation due to width. The difference between the metal laminate in the Unleashed and the carbon tubes of the Ripstick is pretty interesting. The Unleashed feels slightly more damp and stable at speed, and since it has a pretty long effective edge, it's a darn smooth carver as well. It's not nearly as quick or agile as the Ripstick 88, so if you're looking for a mix of bumps, trees, and groomer performance, I'd stick to the Elan in the 88. I just don't think that the wider skis are as effective for what you're looking to do. Have fun! SE

It's so amazing to listen to your conversations and watch your videos! My question if you have time to answer is: I'm skiing on vacations at Breckenridge and other area ski resorts in Colorado where my daughter lives. Of course, at 74, I am slowing somewhat, have a replacement hip and another one which is suspect. Yet I just returned from a Christmas trip visiting Summit county and skied 4 days out of 7. No health issues and my legs felt strong. I'm used to the altitude, having visited the rockies for more than 20 years. I weight 145 lbs: My current skis are Solomon QST 99 in the 167cm length and an Armada TST (2012) in 174cm. It's time for a more narrow waisted ski, which is more focused on piste, on groomers. You've drawn my attention to the 2023 Elan Ripstick 88's in 164cm and the 2023 Volkl Kendo 88 in 163cm. Any guidance for me? Jeff? Bob?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Greg! I think that the Ripstick will give you all the performance that you need without the demand or weight of the Kendo. I think that given your history and movement to the lower end of the velocity spectrum, the Ripstick offers a better blend of attributes. I'm 6/2 225 and skied that thing pretty hard and it held up just fine. I'd go Ripstick in the 164. Have fun! SE/Bob

I’ve got over 70 days on my 96 Black Edition Ripsticks and tuned them 3 times. They are still like brand new. By the way if you feel slippage when pushing hard on ice, sharping the inside edges only seems to COMPLETELY eliminate this. Out of the box tunes are not always optimal.

Thanks for this review! A couple questions, how would you compare the Ripstick 88 to the Atomic Maverick 86C (also 88 underfoot) overall? And a main factor is edge grip when firmer conditions might be prominent. And to talk about the edge rocker on the opposite/weak side edge, that's harder to visualize or understand. Would you describe this edge rocker more like a bevel all the way down the length of the edge, similar to how a base side edge might be sharpened with a lot of bevel? Or is it more curved down the length of the edge? Might need a true bar, ha. Have you guys ever switched the skis over to see what that feels like?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
I'd say the Maverick is a pretty grippy ski for the weight, and likely a sharper option than the Ripstick, mostly due to the flexible shovel of the Elan, making it more of a freeride feel. The way the amphibio works, in the tips of the skis, only about 10-15 cm down from the top, the inside edge has more camber to it while the outside portion is more rockered. It has nothing to do with the base, really, or the actual edges. Basically, the shovel of the ski is "twisted" to accommodate this character. It mainly just makes the uphill ski track a lot smoother. When you switch it over, it's not as smooth.

As someone who currently owns a 104 free for the hard charging days, this ski seems like a great option for when I want to focus on being elegant in the bumps, trees, and taking it more chill on the groomers. Great reviews; thanks. Looking at an 80’s width ski for primarily groomers, but the occasional storm dump frescoes and some ungroomed terrain. Skiing Northern MI. 160#, 5’7”; Level 2, good fundamentals, but 65+ age! Can you compare and contrast Rustler, Steadfast and Ripstick for me. Your pick, and why? Thanks.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
The Rustler, at 92 mm underfoot, is kind of out of your zone. Between Steadfast and Ripstick, I do think the Steadfast makes more sense as it's an amazing on-trail ski that can still handle off-piste conditions and terrain. I'd pick that one because it mainly sounds like you're skiing groomers, and that's where that ski excels.

Thanks for the great review. I’m 5’11” and 175 lbs and looking at these in 172, kendo 88s in 170, and enforcer 88s in 172. I ski mostly groomers and bumps with occasional trees and off piste and definitely prefer a stiffer feel. Which out of those three would do you think would be the best fit?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials 2 ай бұрын
I think the Enforcer is the move here, if you're looking for a stiffer feel but also some rocker for the trees and bumps. The Kendo is very precise and reactive so it's great in groomers, but so is the Enforcer, but the Nordica is more rockered and tapered for more of a freeride feel. I think if you're looking for stiffness and stability, the Ripstick takes a back seat to these two other models.

Hey guys, Awesome review. I am bigger at 5.9” @ 210 but I am getting tired of my 177 MindBender 90Ti’s. I find I get super tired and when I jump on shorter skis that my friends have I have a much more fun time and get to ski bumps and trees. I want to go with a pivoty ski for that application but I am Worried I will flex out a Ripstick 172. Is there a ski that I can pivot but not crush at the 165-170is length and be able to ski all mountain including bumps and trees or would the 170 in these be fine?

Competition mogul skis are very one-dimensional just the way that 218 FIS Downhill skis are. They're tough to find, mainly, and having a demo binding on them is an even rarer occurrence. Rest assured, though, that if you find yourself in a competition mogul course, these will be your fastest path to the gold.

I've put about 6 days on the K130P this year and I'm very impressed. They're 130 flex, 100mm last, and have a thinner liner than most. The shell has a pretty robust wrap over the instep, and while I struggle with instep issues, these liners keep my feet pretty happy. The liners come with laces and eyelets, so you can even get crazy with the liner. I do not lace. They're harder to get on and off versus my Lange RS 130, but that's my only complaint. They ski great--great fit and stance with plenty of power. Softer boot board than the RS, so slightly damper underfoot. Cool buckle design as well--I forget what it's called, but there's a one-finger/hand release that's pretty easy to use. That's my thoughts for now, but we'll likely do a full review later in the season. SE/Bob

As long as you're steering clear of rails, yeah, they'll be just fine! If you start doing spins on jumps, you mind find that their a little unbalanced with the traditional all-mountain mount point, but they'll definitely work for getting more comfortable on jumps, straight air tricks, etc etc. Even some 360s would be just fine, it would be more noticeable with bigger spins, bigger jumps, etc.

It's tough to argue against the Elan for that application. The Maverick is a bit stronger of a carver, but I don't think it's worth the tradeoff for the Elan's willingness in the bumps. The Maverick is more like the Kore in terms of light weight and stiff flex, while the Elan's shovel is great for driving into huge moguls and steering you through the trees and other tight spots. A lot of people have been putting Tyrolia Attacks on the Ripsticks. I like that binding for it as the low stand height works well with this ski. Hey Douglas! Ripstick 88 should be plenty of ski for you, especially considering your cautious description. That makes me think you're probably not skiing super fast, which would be the only situation the Ripstick might not live up to expectations for a skier your size. For length, 180 cm should be plenty. Or is it more curved down the length of the edge? Might need a true bar, ha. Have you guys ever switched the skis over to see what that feels like?

Not surprising. Skiers will have to decide if it's worth the tradeoff for having such smooth, light, and energetic performance, I suppose.

Something to be said about a ski that makes you better at skiing! Bob does love the Kores, however, but he skis them very differently too. Very interesting to watch.

More of a question, would you say this is a great East coast ski, say compared to the Enforcer 94?
@SkiEssentials

I think I'd take a Ripstick 88 over an Enforcer 94 for my daily use here in VT, mainly because I like the maneuverability and playfulness of the ski vs. the Enforcer, which does have a higher ceiling, but also requires more attention and work.

I think 188 is probably the way to go. 180 would feel VERY short compared to your 185 Mantras, and 188 is still going to be far more playful and more maneuverable than those Mantras. Unless you want them to be exceptionally quick and agile, I would go 188.

Hi! I'm a Level 1 instructor, advanced skier, 5'11 and 75kg looking for an all mountain ski 65/35 piste/off, for all day 9-17h use (therefore not too fatiguing but fun and responsive enough). I already have a SL Fusion, which I love on perfect groomers but, even when I'm able to use it for everything but powder, it is not as enjoyable in spring snow or crowded and bumpy slopes at the end of the day... (For powder days I usually rent +100mm waist skis) This Ripstick, Dynastar M Pro 85, Head Kore 87 and Rossi Experience 86ti get my attention. My question would be focused on (by priority) versatily, ease of use but enough speed ceiling, soft snow performance and edge grip (and icy conditions, but I already have the SL Fusion for this) How would you sort these 4 for my stats and application? Any other suggestion is also welcome, just in case you think I should look for something more exigent (but better for me) Thanks so much in advance! Love your reviews

While the Rossignol has the most in terms of a high-performance ceiling, that does come at the cost of ease of use. It's pretty demanding and somewhat heavy. The Ripstick and Kore fall on the other side of the spectrum as being on the lighter side. That said, the Kore is the stiffest of the group and doesn't always feel like it's working with you. The Ripstick is totally intuitive and simple to ski with a wonderful performance and easygoing feel. It's one of my personal favorites. The Dynastar also has a soft spot in my heart as an unsung hero in this group. It's got amazing energy, tons of pop, and the shovel is amenable to softer snow, bumps, and trees in a way that these other skis aren't quite there. I'd narrow focus to the M-Pro and the Ripstick, with the M-Pro deserving a strong look.

@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! All of those skis remain the same from 22 to 23. I think my latest experience on this 88 makes me see the value of it even more. In general, if a skier is looking for a one-ski quiver and has soft snow intentions, the mid-90's are a great place to be, but even then, these 88's just have a whole lot going for them. The 96 has more mass, so feels a bit more stable on groomers, while having the extra surface area for flotation. For days like what we've had, though, I appreciate the quickness of the 88, and for bumps, trees, and other tighter zones, the 88 is still superior. Declivity is a nice comparison, offering more dampness and power, but isn't quite as quick. I'd rather ski Declivity in crud, chop, and broken snow, but didn't find anything wrong with either ski in a groomer and carving format.

You often compared these to the Core (Head?) skis, but I'd be curious what other skis compare to Ripstick 88 in terms of having similar soft flex, performance, and directionality (no smeary twin tips pls) as it concerns us lighter skiers.
@patrion6028
@patrion6028 Жыл бұрын
The comparison likely comes from last week review, the Kore 93 one. I've been shopping for softer skis, i actually bought the Ripstick 88, and i would +1 on what Jeff said. As a an aggressive expert skier, i could get to it's limitations, but all the versatility it brings is great and it's a really good ski. If you want to look further, i also looked at these: BC Vertis (85), BC Captis (90), and for more of a dedicated front side option Kästle PX81 and BC Divus. I found it a little tricky to find something in the 80 - 90 mm range that's not too burly, but these are what i came up with after some investigation, and they all should match your requirements pretty well. Alongside the Ripstick i bought the BC Divus as the more hard pack front side option.
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
It's an easy comparison because they're both carbon-powered skis, but other than that, they feel quite different. Armada Declivity 88C fits into this category as well. If you're looking for similar flex and performance to the Ripstick, I'd say that Armada, the Atomic Maverick 88C, and the Rossignol Experience 86 Basalt all fall into Ripstick arena in these applications.

SubaruAficionado, coming back to you. Just had 2 days on the BC Divus, and i recommend trying it out if you get the chance too. It has great stability and a high performance ceiling, has a softer flex despite the metal and checks a lot of the directional boxes. It's super easy to get from edge to edge and unweighting the tail feels like it takes zero effort, without sacrificing carving performance. Some chopped up crudy snow didn't concern it at all. Easily one of the most fun skis i've been on in the past years. I consider myself as an aggressive expert skier, am 171 and bought the 172 lenght. The 5 cm breaks in lenght should make it easy to find something that fits.

Thanks Pat and SkiEssentials for the informative responses. Since posting, I've had a chance to demo a friend's 2022 Ripstick 88s in the 180cm length on a typical Colorado day (sunny, soft/firm, buttery surface). The Ripstick is a solid all-around ski that i could ski with authority after several runs. i wouldn't want anything stiffer overall as I weight in at just over a buck-fifty, but I appreciated the slightly relatively-stiffer tail for energy out of the turn. I'm only moderately aggressive, but ski everything on the hill and especially love pow, bumps, off-piste, trees. I'm more of a technical, perfect turn seeker. The Ripstick is light, which isn't too important to me as I'm coming from heavier, supple, older skis, that are good at plowing through crud, but lightweight is appreciated in the bumps. The skis you've mentioned above all sound enticing, esp the BD Divus and Armada Declivity but think most might be slightly too stiff for my weight/age. Thx again!

Would love to ski an 88 Black. As is, it's too soft. Poor grip on hard snow. Seems a little backward. They build a stiffer version of their wider skis which are more soft snow oriented yet no bulked up rendition of the narrowest width which should excel on firmer conditions. Bob is right, bring on the 88 Black.

We haven't seen many warranty claims/issues from Ripstick skis. We do sell off our demo fleet at the end of the year, and that's kind of a good time to look at certain skis and get a feel for how they degrade over the course of the year. Elan hasn't stood out one way or the other. Surprisingly, even some Stockli skis with the metal topsheet gets chips and peels, and those slivers will actually hurt! Maybe I'd say that since they're right/left specific that the wear marks will be more consistent than a ski that switches feet every time (or at least randomly).

Comparing this to Armada Declivity 92ti?
@SkiEssentials
@SkiEssentials Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a great comparison. The Elan, being a bit lighter and more flexible in the shovel, is easier to initiate turns while the Declivity is more consistent in flex throughout. This, paired with the metal, makes it damper, but also a bit more lumbering. Great energy if you work for it, while the Elan supplies much of the same with way less effort.
@Tirppa
@Tirppa Жыл бұрын
@@SkiEssentials I love my ripsticks and they are super easy to ski. But on icier days I do feel I'd appreciate bit more damping. That's exactly why I'm looking for the Declivity. Just a bit more stable but can still be fun.

We haven't seen an unreasonable amount of warranties or damage to the demo fleet on the Ripsticks. My one thought is that since they're right-left specific, the wear and tear is more focused than an either foot ski.
