Hi Jeff Great insight on the double vs triple pane, I would like to learn more about the energy efficiency of double vs triple pane windows but don't see a video on your channel about it. Can you tell me if it is worth upgrading to triple pane in order to keep cold air out and keep warm air in during winter times? I live in the north east and the winter's are very cold. Thanks!
@HoustonWindowExperts
@HoustonWindowExperts Жыл бұрын
An extremely cold climates, triple pain will outperform double pane. However, if the window does not have good air leakage ratings, it won't matter. The air will get in around the window sash. Probably the most important thing, is to find a great installer. You can have an amazing window that is installed poorly and it will not work very well. I started a website to help people locate a great window company near them. We may have someone in your area. Please visit TheWindowExperts.com

Another great great video Jeff. The only thing is the U-Value description you gave was the measurement of cold air getting through the window, when In actuality it’s the “retention” of warmer air within the room that leaks out of that window, obviously during cold temperatures outside of the home. I’m my areas of service, the U-Factor needs to be lower than .30, which is definitely achievable. However, .20 for a U-Factor is insane, and yes would take a triple pane window which I’m not much of a fan of, but probably because I live in a mild climate.

For the U factor wouldn’t it also prevent the cold air from escaping inside the house. Solar heat gain deals only with the sun but u factor is more a total efficiency with regards to heat transfer from the ambient temperature high to low

I stopped in a local Window and Door place yesterday and inquired about this, they said to talk to an accountant about the tax details, but I made specific mention of the U-Factor 0.20 you discussed here, he said that's basically impossible and is under the impression they (they, as in the powers that be) probably made a mistake and meant it to be 0.30, which would make more sense. I guess time will tell if they issue a correction of some sort down the road if it's brought to their attention.

There could be a lot of reasons for that. One of them is to mask the individual unit pricing so you cannot compare it to a competitor. You can only compare the bottom line at that point.

Dissenting opinion here. If they give extra credit for U 0.30 windows, that covers basically every moderate quality window on the market. The point shouldn’t be to throw tax money to give people new average products, but to encourage the market to push the envelope of efficiency. Just like subsidizing EVs allowed them to reach economies of scale to become self-sustaining industries, this extra encouragement can help the next generation of windows come to market. This lasts 10 years. Materials and manufacturing breakthroughs could see the standard window of 2032 being made affordably at 0.20 U factor, 50% less heat loss than the gold standard of today. 0.30 could someday be looked upon the same way we consider 0.50 windows today as cheap leaky trash. That’s my hope. Whether or not it actually happens, who knows. Whether or not it’s an efficient use of taxpayer dollars, also rightfully controversial. What on earth this has to do with reducing inflation, who knows.

@Randal323

If I understand the legislation correctly, there are Tax Credits and there are Rebates. It depends on the product or material you purchase as to whether you will receive a Tax Credit or a Rebate. For the purpose of this discussion, Windows and Exterior Doors receive a Tax Credit. (other products may apply so research the regulations). There are no personal income limits to receive a Tax Credit. Rebates apply to an electric appliance, insulation, electric wiring, heat pump (check for other products that qualify). Rebates are subject to what the legislation refers to as a household area median income (AMI). As an opinion, the reason these Tax Credit amounts are so small is because replacing windows is not a direct attack on fossil fuel elimination. Bunk BS climate change was not created based on science. It was created when global elitists realized it was the greatest opportunity to obtain and wield power, at all cost.

I am researching this, like he said the IRS is getting this up. The credits were there to a minimal degree and I tried during 2010 when we replaced our 1960’s windows. Lesson learned back then. He’s right on getting the material and labor breakdown. You need that for tax time. We could have taken those credits earning $135k back then. I read so far to qualify Medium-income is defined as a household making up to 150 percent of its area’s median income. For example if $60,000 is the medium in your area times 1.5. $90,000. Low-income is defined as making less than 80 percent of its area’s median income.
