2023 Fender Tom Delonge Strat vs. 2002 Original comparison

i got my TD strat off ebay in 2005 when i was 15 for $400. I was blink obsessed and I jumped at the opportunity . It had a small chip in the side but it was just a little character. I begged my mom to loan me the money and explained how this would be the purchase of the lifetime. A bit of an exaggeration but I am so glad I had the insight to the opportunity. Kid sent it to me covered in tape residue, packaged like a fool but I cleaned that baby off and I have treasured that guitar all these years. It is still my favorite guitar in my collection. I was pretty intrigued to see the re-issue! I no doubt would jump on that if I didn't have my OG. I am glad to see others are getting the opportunity to play it today but I mentally high-five my 15 year old self.

The satin neck is a huge improvement imo It plays much better and the neckplate is mich more charming

I love a satin neck. I also love the color hue of the new graffiti yellow. It’s a tad bit brighter looking.

i have an original surfgreen beast from 2002 and my pick guard is now golden due to exposure to the elements because i loved this guitar so much i never put it away so i could play it everyday and i will never part with it because i love the joy it gives me on a daily basis thank you Tom im waiting for you tour next february in Melbourne Australia.

Just a little clarification, the wiring on the reissue isn’t exactly the same. The new ones have a treble bleed circuit which the old ones didn’t, that way if you bring down the volume on the guitar the high frequencies will still sound clearly instead of more muffled like in the old one. Still, having both new and old, I think both are awesome in my book, and personally I prefer the satin neck over the gloss finish, feels smoother and less sticky

The reason for the sonic difference is probably that the pickup on the 2002 has demagnetized slightly in 20 years.

I bought one new in the Seafood Green or whatever back in 2002-3. I sold it immediately. Kind of regretted that after i saw what they were fetching. No big whoop, I've sold more great Guitars then i can count. Is the new one Mahogany Body ? Thanks !

I remember when the originals came out. I was going to get one and put a standard Strat pickguard and vintage-spec pickups in it. Back in the pre-CBS days you could order strata either way, and I was big into Dick Dale style surf rock. Would have been perfect. Wouldn’t have been an investment, because I’d have sold or given away the pickguard, bridge, and pickup.

Not a big fan of satin necks either, but can get some polish and shine up the neck. i usually play a fully coated gloss neck so to me a satin neck looks 'unfinished' persoanl preference. Good overview here, still waffling on it.

So many ppl have been complaining that it comes with a single pickup but do they not realize that when you take off the pickguard cover, the guitar has been routed for a single coil middle pickup, as well as a humbucker neck pickup?

Ehh, I can’t possibly understand why you would want literally every single guitar to be bolt on/ pickguard/ single bridge pickup, but that’s just me. Obviously it’s different in Tom’s position, he’s a world touring musician that sticks to the things that he’s good at. Plus, wouldn’t you have loads of your own signature if you could? 😂

I imagine the neck finishes are the same. I have a mark hoppus bass and I also noticed the neck was a wonderful gloss, but the back of the headstock revealed that it’s merely skin oil from 15 years of playing before I got to it. It could be that something about these models made it take on oils easier, but I think it’s just from use

The 2002 definitly has a painted glossy neck and 2023 has a satin one. To a certain amount that could be possible but in no way to the extend the OG strat is.

I mean, you could also just check the specs. The new one has a different neck, nothing to do with 'skin oils,' that is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard in my life.

The new one will shine up after playing for a while. It doesn’t look like the tint is as dark on the new one, but it will darken over time from UV exposure. The best way to know the difference is to remove the necks and compare the heels.

Mainly aging probably. Could be slightly lighter, but it will darken with age either way!

Getting a sig model has nothing to do with being a guitar great. He's one of the best selling artists of all time and Fender know they can make gangbusters off his sig model, and considering they're backordered like fuck, it worked. It's called business. I mean shit, they just gave Steve Lacy and H.E.R. sigs as well and they're both far less deserving

Bro you must be high 😂 I have had the seafoam green 2002 since it dropped. 2-3 yrs later I used that thing through 5150s 6505s mesa boogie duels the list goes on. Took it on tours and played nothing close to blink...All heavy shit. Well post hard-core heavy...Anyways I did change the tuning keys to hvy locking ones and that alone with a C sharp tuning and good strings maaaan! I still spread it to this day how it is alive I do not know! And it is about as nice as his yellow other than a bit more wear and tare. Oh! And moved the front strap nip to the back for locking straps. Better guitar spins that way lol. Plus it should be in the back anyhow for a guitar coming from a jump around band.
