i bought the raion to try it and i had the same exact issue sometimes my dps didn't come out cause down wouldn't register. returned it. still looking for the "one" but currently i'm using the victrix bfg and its been the best from all the ones I've tested. I think I've tested all the ones you have in the video.

I’ve been playing on a pad for 30 years and the best pad I’ve ever used for a fighting game was the Saturn controller. Playing Virtua Fighter on it was amazing.

I've had good luck bringing the FC4 back to life by taking it apart, cleaning the pcb with alcohol and greasing up the rubber and around the buttons with Sanwa grease. Makes them feel brand new again.

It's amusing that after all these years, the FC4 still reigns supreme or is near the top of the list for many pad players. I wish Hori recognized this after the Octa wasn't as well received and started production of it again (with a fix for the dpad wearing down).

+ 1 ! I also used it for highly competitive resident evil 3 nemesis speedruns ! I was able to be as fast and accurate as pc players with that one controller. Did wonders for me on SFV. I DONT UNDERSTAND why it s now discontinued.. also no equivalent on xbox

I made a custom mod with my ds4 dpad. i have 1 battlebeaver button only for UP and the left right and down are connected via the stock DPAD. Essentially only the up button is separated. This way I don't get accidental upback inputs and can still do to quarter circles easy

Great video! Unfortunately for us pad players this current line of pads on the market are not great for us in terms of quality and reliability. Having to replace/repair these pads every 2-3 months is exhausting and annoying. I wish Qanba would try their hand in the pad market, I feel like they would make great pads as most of their products are of high quality.

I noticed the same thing in KoF when doing qcf-hcb supers on the Razer. So I switched to the Powera Fusion Fightpad. Problem still occurred, but far less than the Raion. That said, I still like the Raion too

I've used a lot of these controllers and for a while, the Dualsense 5 was my go to, but my recent weapon of choice is the 8bitdo Pro 2 Wired Controller for Xbox Series X. It doesn't have the problem that plagues the other 8bitdo controllers where the input lag is really high. It's also a much cheaper option than a lot of the competition. I really recommend people try it.

Wow, for me the 4 separate buttons d-pad style is way easier! I didn't know people have problems with it being too accurate. I really suffer a lot when using the normal "fixed" d-pad. Specially jumping is a nightmare for me when using those.

I really want to see someone replicate the Neo Geo style of Dpad, which is more akin to an actual arcade stick. I think if one of the modern companies can nail this design, so many fightpad users would be overly happy with it. In fact, a good portion of the fighting community that use both sticks and pads have mentioned the NG stick-like Dpad being the golden middle ground. I also want to see someone replicate the Sega Saturn Dpad design, where you have a pivot at the controller's shell rather than buried down into the switches. I think designs like what Razer uses on the Raion would benefit from this style, as you'd have membrane-less independent switches, yet that upper pivot would drastically help with diagonals. The Raion does have some kind of pivot going on, the top plastic (the Dpad itself, not the shell) is pivoted on the lower plastic, which is meant to sit firmly between the top plastic and the PCB, yet it doesn't work as intended; there are mods to fix it, a literal spacer is needed, and I've heard the Dpad is wonderful after doing so, but the fact that you have to mod a bad design to work as intended really shows the quality of the product and the quality of the design, thus I think a simpler (less parts, better molding, etc.) design of using the Saturn's pivot would work better. Another thing I've wanted for a long time, yet it'll never truly happen, is an 8-way Dpad. The Battle Beaver independent D button mod is a step towards this, but as everyone who uses it has found out by now, diagonals with it suck to use, and at least within the mentality of the design an 8-way pad would work wonderfully here. Though personally, except I'm not sure how fighting games would use it as that's not the genre I typically play, I want an 8-way pad to have extra diagonals at 22.5° mixed inputs, so many games that rely on diagonals, such as platformers or metroidvanias that rely on weapon positioning (funnily enough, Metroid Dread uses the analog stick for this exact purpose, finer steps than 45° increments), would benefit from an 8-way pad that has 16 inputs between discrete and mixed directions. Sadly, this will never happen, because the consoles dictate what controllers can be and none of the big three will ever invest into this kind of Dpad update. I know most people would argue to just use a stick, such as Metroid Dread does, but it just doesn't feel the same, plus typical stick issues, having to digitally gate the stick into pie slices which also includes larger deadzones due to accuracy issues within the tip of the slices, etc.

You can definitely rock a PS4 pad or PS5. But now there is a ton of 6 button pads that are good. It’ll burn out quicker than a hit box but that’s the pad players dilemma but you get all the same advantages with the RS and LS stick buttons being set to real buttons so like in SF6 I get 1 button OD moves and 1 button run with Ken along with 1 button parry and 1 button drive impact.

I use retrobit saturn and m30 pads. Learning hitbox as well but I never have any issues with those with any character. I have been using Saturn pads for 20 years though, so. The Power Fusion A is good too 👍

I really wish someone would use the Saturn's Dpad design within a modern context other than just repro controllers. The upper pivot is an amazing design that has benefits, manufacturers seemed to have hyper-focused on iterations of the original Nintendo design with the lower pivot that's buried in the switches; or they're going pivot-less and relying on the typical rubber membrane's domes to keep the pad centered as a form of faux-pivot, of which this design allows for simultaneously pressing opposing inputs our pressing all four inputs at once whereas a physical pivot gates these actuations from being possible. Then there's odd one-offs that don't quite work as intended, like the Razer Raion's mid-pivot design that has to be fixed by shimming the lower plastics up so that the pivot properly engages; I'm not saying mid-pivots don't work, but I have yet to see an implementation that works as intended due to the fact that there's so many pieces involved to move the pivot to the mid-region of the setup, plus the fact that tolerances exist and companies cut corners constantly. I think the reason it's rarely talked about or considered at all is due to the fact that really only a couple of retro and repro controllers use the design, the scope of such is so limited that most people will never use the design let alone even know how the design works. An alternative I do miss is the Neo Geo Dstick, which mimics how an arcade stick works. Rarely talked about, probably because of the NG's lack of popularity and nearly phasing out into obscurity, yet members of the fighting community who do use both sticks and pads claim a modernization of the Dstick would be good middle ground. I'm not saying SNK's design was perfect, it had its own quirks due to complexity of the component, but I do think a Dstick is a viable option if anyone were to modernize it. Maybe the circlepad (like the XY slider the 3DS and PSP used, the pivot-less joystick) might be a good starting point, just use physical mini-tactswitches instead of the carbon wiper potentiometers within the housing, the return to center spring mechanism seems far better than what SNK had implemented, of which this solution is far simpler. I know there are some multi-input devices on the components market, some of which might replicate the movement of the stick, but I don't think any of them are made robust enough or at the correct size scale to be a proper Dstick.

@@gexcen default punches and kicks for face buttons of course. The shoulder buttons, depends on character, for dhalsim I'll use them for his teleport, gief I set 3p and lariat. Juri I set LK and HK to right shoulder for her ex kick. I use face buttons for drive rush and DI. I use a claw like grip on the pad and do all my OD moves with my thumb. The lack of extra shoulder buttons is what really holds the pad back but I'm up to diamond with juri and platinum 4 with a few others. Most definitely a competitive pad imo once you learn to how to use it. 👍

Retro-bit's Saturn controllers are worth checking out. They have wired USB controllers that work on all modern systems. You can also get 2.4 wireless versions. They are dropping a pro version soon but it seems to exclusively be wireless. Saturn controllers one of the best d-pad styles ever and they aren't stupid expensive.

im using the new xbox core series controller and i enjoy that more than the xbox one version. I dont like my ps5 controller the dpad is fine( i have problems down blocking i let go of block alot) but thats a me thing, my main thing is the bumpers for ex moves im not a fan of using them. I also still play on a madcatz 360 fightpad(the dpad is sus) but its the most comfortable pad i have ever picked up also i use a 360 pad but you have to get used to the dpad its really easy to rock into a direction u dont want but its still the best controller ever created.

I dunno if this is a problem exclusive to the switch version but the dpad on the fighting commander was just incredibly subpar imo. The Raion and its clickiness feels so good so I think I'm just gonna learn to input my supers with precision. Also iirc doesn't DP just let you go over drive impacts? I remember running some demo sets where I did it on accident a few times.

The Flydigi Apex 2 is the clear winner. It has a ton of buttons, and you can use all of them as unique buttons with reWASD PC software. You can disable the up and down d-pad buttons, and do them from the back buttons instead, which is massively superior than using a d-pad normally. Button box might not be as good as pad for SF6, but that doesn't mean we should forget everything we learned from it!

I have a Fighting Commander 4. It's a great controller, but so hard to get nowadays. It's either just not available online or it's close to $200. I got mine for $50 a few years ago.

My pad of choice was always the sega saturn pad. Retrobit has 3 versions, usb, bluetooth and wireless. USB version feels really cheap but it does the trick, the other 2 versions are equally superiors in terms of building quality and general feel overall. I only recommend playing wired, so either Bluetooth or wireless are both good picks. Totally recommend it and the Bluetooth version its not even 20 bucks where i live. Totally worth it.

@@voltyyy If analog is most comfortable then I think it's fine to stick with it. There's some pros that use it :) So if you use analog, Octa is a great choice and it would work on PS5. If you use dpad, Fighting Commander 4. You can also use the Fighting Commander Switch for much cheaper and it's very similar. If you get either of these, you'll need to get the Wingman FGC also to play on the PS5

There's not too many fight pads right now for Xbox series X. Wanted a PowerA pad but they dont have it. Hori sticks at $200 is over priced i feel.

Yeah the options are slim honestly if you can make the Xbox pad work for you then you should stick with it and save some money. Sticks are an expensive first investment but you only have to buy it once and change parts when needed. While I have over $200 worth of pads 😅

I bought the Brook XB2 converter which lets you use any PlayStation pad on an Xbox. The only annoying thing is the touchpad takes screenshots on Xbox so you'll be getting a lot of random screens when you don't mean to.

I also recently modded a Mayflash F500 elite with Qanba Gravity buttons, stick and a 4lb tension spring and it upped my game big time. The only problem I'm having still is supers in clutch situations. They only come out like 25 percent of when I want them. But all my normals and special accuracy is perfect now.

dude i'm currently using my friend's 8bitdo 30 for sf6...it's a bit small for me..the dpad is good, but i'm pretty sure it'll get mushy over time. also the xyz buttons are super small..other than that, the built is pretty solid..one more thing, it has only 2 shoulder buttons

I legitimately use a sega genesis 8 button(6 face 2 shoulder) controller. It was 20 bucks when i bought it and i regularly beat ppl who have 50-500 dollar controllers.

The best way is to get the switch fighting commander and use a PS5 adapter if you play on PS5. If you play on PC, then you can just plug and play

I'm kind of shocked that you haven't tried the various 8bitdo and Retro Bit six button SEGA Saturn and Genesis control pads (via a brook or mayflash adapter). They actually feel pretty good, and the build quality is pretty decent.

Are you still using Hori Fighting Commander 4? I want to get fighting commander switch version to play on PC because that's the only one that's still in production, but Im reading online and people are complaining that the dpad get's broken easily and stops responding properly, in some casee it only lasted a month. Did you have similar problems?

Yep, it was also my pad prior to the Raion so about 1 year of use and it still functions. The Dpad is much looser now though after all the use and I expect it to fail at some point. I dont have experience with the Switch version but I was planning to do the same and buy it once my PS4 one dies.

I think it comes from the game because i play on hitbox witch uou can do input really fast and i have the same problem than you with super. It misses input if you are too fast. Same manipulatuon in other fighting games work without problem.

If you use the analog stick, the Octa is a great controller. If you're only using the Dpad, get the xbox

I disassembled the joystick, and there was a whole structure of 6 buttons with short plastic wires, they were tight, I pulled them a little to relieve tension and the problem was solved. My issue is I couldn't map out the buttons on the Raion during the beta... like couldn't get it to rotate screens during Create a character or map the trigger buttons to specific actions. Any chance the xbox elite controller triggers will map out correctly?

Yeah unfortunately most fightpads would have that issue, especially during lobby or create a character where you need to rotate the camera. But during matches they'll shine. For the Xbox Controller question, depends on the console but I'm almost certain you won't run into issues.

It's how people are playing Strive with older controllers as of right now.

Go to the character guide for either Ryu or Luke. Then select the level 3 trail and hit the back button on your pad. It'll let you try the trail out yourself with full meter

The best pad for any game would be a PS1 pad with 6 buttons in the front and 4 L and R buttons. Then capcom should hire Nisihitani again to fix that awful input readings for SF6.
