While both come out fairly even on paper, I have read, and heard from people I know too many stories of Hyundai not honoring powertrain warranty items. So I think it would be a hard pass for Hyundai for me.

I narrowed my search to these two. The FE Platinum was 70k while the Hy Calligraphy was 51k. Can’t argue the power train options for the Ford but 20k was too steep. Went with the Palisade and am really happy with it.

Great video Steve. I purchased a 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline (I even watched one of your videos before making the decision). I really have enjoyed the driving experience and have had no issues so far with the vehicle. Unfortunately, with that being said…I recently had all 4 rims/tires stolen at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Cathedral City. It was the second Explorer to have had all four rims/tires stolen in two weeks at this particular hotel. So something to consider. Just make sure to add some wheel locks or watch where you park it. You can also turn your front tires at a drastic angle to hopefully help. Hyundai Palisade was an option for me as well. But I went the Explorer route because of my relationship with the maintenance department at my local Ford Dealership (previous Ford Fusion owner).

Thanks! Was going to ask how you're liking the Timberline and then I saw the wheels stolen.. man.. that sucks. Good call on the wheel locks though. I find people tend to stick with a brand, especially if it's been nothing but good experiences. Glad you're enjoying your new ride so far. Had a chance to do any trails or just blasting through snow?

@@CarsWithSteve I’ve only gone on light off roading (dirt trails), nothing drastic…yet, lol. I only had 2,618 miles on it when they stole my rims/tires. It’s still in the shop. I have to drive back (7+ hours) to pick it up next week. However, I was enjoying every single mile before the theft :)

At least you were able to have a bit of fun with it before that happened. Multiple style wheel locks coming your way now?

I'm driving a 2021 Explorer Limited 4WD vehicle. It's my 4th Explorer. I know that Consumer Reports is not a fan of the vehicle, but I believe I've read that they out sell the Hyundai about 2 or 3 to one. I do have a bias against Asian vehicles stemming from a few prior purchases years ago - likely not supportable now. Anyhow, I really like my Explorer. It's comfortable, gas mileage on the highway (2.3L) is about 28, around town about 24. Cruise over 80 mph and the mileage will drop. It's got lots of room and the panorama glass roof is really cool. It's quiet inside and the sound system is great. I don't really have any negatives. My 2013 got totaled during the pandemic and I had to replace it prematurely and my choices were limited, but I did get something that was very close to what I would have bought in normal times.

I've never understood CR's hate for the Explorer. Most Explorer owners I know love their rides and haven't run into issues. In an ideal world.. some of the tech from the Telluride in the Explorer would be great but it's looking like the next generation Explorer is going to bring some amazing tech. What would be the ideal build you would have gone with?

@@CarsWithSteve November 2021 was my wreck. I went to the local dealers and the show rooms were empty. I was able to drive one Explorer at a dealer, but he did not have a car to sell me. Online research showed a vehicle going to another dealer. What I wanted was a basic Limited 4WD model with seating for 7. The Explorer coming in was a 6-seat model and it had the towing and panorama roof, two things I would not have ordered. I forgot to mention that the color had to be RED. I know that limited my choices, but that had to be. Anyway, I like the panorama roof, but don't use it that much and I've used the tow option twice. I've only missed the extra seat twice. All in all, I'm very happy. I think I got the last 2021 Explorer at the dealership two days before Thanksgiving. I would have liked to get a 2022 model, but they could not give me a delivery date at that time. Since I could not keep the rental car forever, I made a financial commitment before the Explorer was even delivered to the dealer. I was treated very fairly, no BS, no ups no extras and I did get a $1,000 manufacturer's rebate. All things considered, it was the best outcome possible. By the way, you can really feel the 300 HP when you kick that little 4-banger in the ass. The current issue of Consumer's Reports makes a comparison between the Explorer and the Palisade. Twice in the past I've written to CR and told them that I thought their ratings are misleading and skew results. Never got a response from them.

Hopefully everyone was able to walk away ok. It was wold looking back at how empty dealer lots were sitting. Don't blame you for wanting a specific color with your ride, I normally do the same thing! Good to hear that you're enjoying yours so far and great that you've pushed it a bit to have some fun with the 2.3L!

Powertrain is all I have a 2020 ford st that is fully equipped but the new 2023 has no more features that 2020 had like no wifi hot spot No massage passenger and driver seats. no rear heated seats no driver and passenger ventilation seats no self parking assist With a way larger price tag I'm a explorer owner and love it but would not purchase a 2023 st trim with xlt features unless you just want the horse power

The Explorer hasn't entered a refresh year which is why the 2023 isn't really different from the 2020 model. But the Explorer 401a has: - Heated/Ventilated 1st row seats - Heated 2nd row is technically there but because of chip shortage the build may not have it (there's a credit available) Massage seats are available optionally with the ST Premium Tech Package Active Park Assist is available optionally

Yeah that makes sense - I've seen Platinum trim without foot activated liftgate and no park assist up in Ontario too. I think the focus is probably going to be on the refresh. I really like what Ford did with the Chinese Edge L so I'm hoping they can bring something like that to North America

I have always liked Explorers and owned them before, but domestic cars are simply not reliable and I will never buy them again. I'll only go for Toyotas at this point. Unfortunately the Toyota Highlander is too small in the third row, so I have to look at other options. But it won't be a Ford.
@CarsWithSteve
@CarsWithSteve Жыл бұрын
Reliability issues and recalls can hit any manufacturer but it's a matter of looking at the number of vehicles that are affected vs the number produced. Haven't had a chance to start reviewing Toyota yet but it's on my radar for this year
