Genesis-Hundai-Kia are rocking EVs! We are on the verge of a renaissance in design. The same "skateboard" can support an infinite number of designs. It will be super cool when customizers can order a "crate" skateboard and design the "top hat." Hope the regulators certify the skateboards and not required separate certifications for each top-hat.

The Koreans are taking the EV move seriously. Hyundai is launching the Ioniq into its own standalone EV exclusive brand. While Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis will slowly transition into EV. There’s a new Korean brand called Edison Motors who recently showed a concept truck called the EFT. Korea seems to be wanting to lead the EV move with affordable vehicles.

The bigger issue with DRLs is them being used at night and drivers being blissfully unaware that they don't have headlights on, they are blinding oncoming traffic and that they can't see properly...
@michaelsprinzeles40222 жыл бұрын
In the 80s my dad taught me to turn on the lights before setting into motion. In the 90s I drove a delivery truck for a massive company & we were told to always turn on the lights. The philosophy was anything you can do to increase your visibility to other drivers is a plus. I've been running my fog lamps, whenever my headlights are on, for 9 years (on a 17 year old car) without changing a bulb. I don't drive much though.
@sssssneaker2 жыл бұрын
I agree with the being visible mantra, but I don't think fog lights add much if you also have your headlights on. Most modern LED DRLs are really plenty bright enough for visibility

We have smart matrix LED headlights on our Mazda, and it works perfectly. We leave everything in the “auto” mode and the lights turn on when it becomes dark with high beams on in a pattern that doesn’t annoy other people on the road. In fog you can actually see which sectors are turned off when there is traffic on the opposite lane while throwing a long beam in your own lane. Just anazing.
@bahamatodd2 жыл бұрын
You guys completely missed the point of his lighting questions. He was asking if there is a brightness requirement because when people forget to turn on their lights, the DRLs are so bright they think their low beams are on. So yes there is a minimum brightness requirement because DRLs should be visible in the day. So unfortunately they can be mistaken for the normal lights at night. The other issue contributing to this are instrument clusters that are always illuminated day and night. If you look to Canada, they just enacted a new law to prevent that from happening. He did not ask about using fog lights during the day. He asked about using them when it is clear, aka when there's NO FOG. The only rule is fog lights must be pointed relatively low to illuminate the road directly in front of the vehicle in low visibility conditions. They should not be used when there is good visibility. Your attention should be down the road. Not directly in front of the vehicle.

I grew up training myself to recognize vehicles by their lights. Sometimes I could also do steering wheels, rear quarter panels, door cards and such. I’ve always tracked brand signatures and laughed (quietly) at folks that needed to wait for a vehicle to pass so they could see the badge to know what it was.

Not really an issue on the 800v architecture (15 mins from 10-80%), but 248 miles for AWD is pretty typical.

People driving at night with just DRLs on is one of my pet peeves…we can’t see you from the back and you probably can’t see where you are going. As for fog lights, vehicles definitely look better with them on at night.
@jstephens27582 жыл бұрын
The fog light problem is that the cheap ones do not have a sharp upper beam cutoff and even those that do, are often mis-aimed and shine into the faces of oncoming drivers after dark. If they are aimed correctly, they should not be a problem.

In a test this car only goes 240 miles - about the same range as a Subaru Soltera. Save your money if you need a car with limited range, and get one that goes off road to some degree. The Daytime Running Light explanation from Jake was really interesting - I always wondered why they last so long and now I know.

I test drove an EV6 the other day and was disappointed the lane centering was so bad compared to my Model 3. It disengaged around mild cor ers and when passing intersections. They also need to fix the console. When I place the steering wheel where I prefer it, I cannot see how fast I am going. The speed hides behind the wheel. There should be a way to move the speed indicator to the center of the display. It looks like this has the same display, but hopefully the HUD will have all the information hidden behind the wheel. I like the styling of the EV6 over the Y and the GV60 over it as well. I'll consider one of these if I can find a dealer willing to sell for MSRP. I'd move to EV6 now if they fix the price or lane centering.

Nice review. Excited for it to hit the market so I can drive it…not excited about the metallic looking buttons…I make frequent trips to my local CARMAX to see what various cars look like after a year, two years, three years, etc…and seeing how the tech ages, or the interiors. Without fail, all the cars with the aluminum/metallic looking buttons always look so out of date in the used cars I see…usually see them on Lexus and Hyundai cars. So, hope there will be other options for the interior buttons…More range would make it a better seller, but having owned a few EVs and PHEVs, most people don’t need that much. My Kia Niro EV is rated at 239, and I easily get upwards of 300 miles on a charge. It’s used mostly for commuting and local errands and I don’t need to charge it that often.

I like all 3 flavors of the Hyundai group products with their very different appearances, interior room and ride vs handling characteristics. You mean to say poorly designed EV‘s are heavier because of the battery packs. Yes the battery packs will always be a super heavy part of an EV. There is a lot of important light waiting that goes on to make sure the vehicle has great range. So let’s just dispel this myth right now the TVs are inherently heavier. They absolutely are not. It’s just bad design that makes some from Legacy auto makers heavier than they should be. Need proof? Look at the BMW I four.

Are the 'fog' lights today really fog lights? My understanding from many years ago, was that the idea of fog lights was to light up below the fog, rather than using your headlights, which would just reflect back from the fog. The old fog lights also used to be orange in colour, to also reduce that bright, white reflection. It's also about time that rear lights were made part of the DRL package, legislated, if necessary.
@saintsubie66612 жыл бұрын
I don’t like the idea of rear lights on during the day unless mfgs do a better job distinguishing them from the rear lights that illuminate when braking
@carljaekle2 жыл бұрын
Fog lights have been white in color for quite some time. They need to be low and or point somewhat low, to prevent reflection back on the driver. A lot of European cars had a rear fog light. I had an Audi A6 that had a single red light on the back that went on with the fog lights.

The Soul EV or e-Soul, depending on what part of the World you're from, have been solid choices for nearly a decade. The Koreans have been more serious about BEVs longer than the Japanese brands. Toyota is still to focused on hydrogen (which is obsolete for passenger vehicles) and hybrids, to the detriment to their BEVs. All three variants (Subaru Solterra, Toyota Bz-whatever, and Lexus RZ) from Toyota are a generation behind the Koreans when it comes to charge speed, range, and power.

If it's a case of mistaken identity or whatever reason it doesn't matter. Even if you've nothing wrong , the fact that these are so accessible by so many different groups for any reason at all. If I pay for a vehicle , as far as I'm concerned, NOBODY but me has a right to upload an update or disable it for any reason at all. I'm sure most people have no clue that they have zero choice about updates , disabling services or just plain shutting it down permanently. If I buy something I want to be the only person deciding what happens with it. People don't have a clue what's coming. You will no longer control or really own your vehicle. If the government decides that you're vehicle isn't fit any longer , just push a button and toast! Think I'm wrong? Just wait . Wait til the manufacturer decides or the government decides your car is too fast. Boom , 100hp gone with a push. You won't even be told. They don't have to. Look at the Galaxy Note 7. Another of people fixed theirs, that didn't matter . Samsung shut them off regardless . There was no choice in the deactivation. Samsung did it without everyone's permission. The same will now apply to all EVs . We're screwed.
