2023 GMC Sierra 1500 with new LZO Duramax 3.0 Turbo Diesel. Walkaround/review.

I have the 23’ GMC Crew Cab with the longer 6’7” Bed. Have the MaxTow Package and LZ0. It’s been a awesome truck. Stays around 27-32 MPG. If you drive it easy it will be around 31-37 mpg. I Tow a big enclosed trailer with a 4K lbs race car. Probably 9000+ lbs. Air compressors, generators, etc. It will pull up the hills in Kentucky in the left lane no problem. Gets about 45% better MPG towing than my 15’ 5.3. All the time being much quicker and powerful loaded and unloaded. One gripe is if you are pulling hard. * I was in a hurry to get home and was not driving smart. It will use a LOT of def. I was losing 9 miles of DEF range per 1 mile traveled. Slowed back down to 70mph and after a while it quit drinking the DEF. Mine has only used 1 quart of oil one time. Between oil changes. Other than that mine is right on the full mark when I go to change the oil. But keep a eye on it. For the 1st 20,000mi they will use more oil and DEF. GM and other people said they calm down after 20,000 break in miles. Amazing truck looking forward to what you do with it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on the oil level for sure. I do a lot of towing as well, and I did notice it burns through the def pretty fast. It also seems to do the regeneration pretty often, approximately every 300 miles when towing. I do like the low-end torque when that Turbo spools up. We tow a 7000lb trailer, and you can barely notice it's back there. 👌

What exactly is def? I’m close to pulling the trigger on this truck, but I’ve never owned a diesel, nor do I have 2nd hand experience with one. I’m curious about the maintenance, upkeep, and how it’ll start and perform in winter months. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. You gentlemen have a wonderful weekend!

DEF “Diesel exhaust fluid” The truck has a secondary tank you put it in. It injects it into the exhaust to help with emissions. All newer diesels have it. You will not put very much at all in it unless you’re pulling. One BIG difference with the Gm3.0 is It does not have all the other equipment that goes bad like other diesels. Burn box and filters In the exhaust.Diesel Injector in the region system etc. So nothing really to go bad. As far as performance in the winter. It starts up like a gas engine. Heats up extremely fast. At 0°f GM recommends plugging it in. I never have in two years. I’ve had no problems. The LZ0 has A global plug per cylinder. So it’s like 10° out. You push the start button. It will sit there for a few seconds then start. The only other maintenance that’s different than a gas. Is every 15 to 20,000 miles you change the Fuel filter. And it is directly underneath your butt on the Frame.On the driver side, very easy to get to.

@@slickcasner4205Thanks man. I appreciate your detailed and lengthy response. I had my truck 3 mos exactly to this day. ‘24 1500 AT4 with Duramax in Thunderstorm Gray. I have about 3800 miles on it so far, and my DEF is currently half full. It was completely filled at time of delivery. I’m enjoying the truck, and praise God haven’t had any issues to date. My MPG’s are pretty impressive. Thanks again!

They start great in cold weather, I have 10k miles on mine. Definitely take an extra jug of def if towing a long distance they drink it quickly when towing. Demon works has a good KZbin channel full of great mods/how to if you into that kind of stuff. Also they are very easy to change the oil on. Mine likes to burn 1.5 qts during 3000 mile break in and less than a qt per oil change. You’re going to really enjoy that truck. My truck is stock except for a rubber mat and rear wheel liners I am looking to upgrade the fuel filter and add air bags or add a leaf or sumosprings to help, I won’t run a sway hitch.

I see you have a lot of sxs videos and comment about that in your video. Can you give feedback on what kinda towing mpg's you get? I tow 5k-7k with a 22' trailer and a KRX and a Teryx4 and would love to hear about towing mpg. Thanks!

I tend to see around 13-15 mpg towing around 7000 lbs up through the hills where we go to ride. On flat surfaces, I've seen around 20 mpg.

I'm interested in a 2024 AT4. Torn between the gas and the diesel. Love the V8 noise, but I do like the diesel's efficiency. Did you have any issues with the AFM from the V8? How has the diesel been since this video?

It's great, when it's not in the shop. It's been in the shop 3 times. Twice for temp sensors and once for a crankcase pressure switch sensor. I've heard similar stories from other people with the 3.0 Duramax, unfortunately. As much as I like the gas mileage and torque while towing, I'll probably go back to a gas engine next time.

Just bought my 2024 GMC 1500 DURAMAX. Starting new job so had to have the new truck to work & 1 week later, day before my new job, FAIL! No start on the new truck. Had to get tow truck to take it to the dealership. I am suoer disappointed & angry, 1 week into my very expensive purchase of this freaking rig 490 miles old & tow to shop. Get a freaking loaner the size of a Honda civic & im supposed to show up to my new Job in truck. Ill see what happens. All i have to say is F GM. Im going back to old trusty Ram after i pay my 72 month loan on this new problem truck.

Whats the towing capacity of the truck with this trim and package ?

My tow capacity is relatively low (8900lbs) because of the gear ratio my truck came with. If you get the same truck and engine with the max tow package (lower gear ratio) you can tow over 13000lbs.
